Move the MMO section here?

So, I have no idea if this is the right place to start a discussion about this (OR if this kind of discussion is even allowed?), but - The MMO section here is pretty much dead. Its like the store in the mall that is hidden furthest in the back, meaning practically no-one goes there.

Its a shame, because I know a lot of gamers play them, and I´d love to see more discussions about them here, but I fear that the fact that they are separated out like this, means it will just slowly wither.

As a personal anecdote, I play a lot of MMOs and are very interested in them, but go to that particular section once a month or so here.

Just a suggestion!

That's fine with me, as long as the D&D section remains far, far away.

I check the MMO section when I'm subbing to Final Fantasy XIV or Elder Scrolls Online, and otherwise forget it exists. I wouldn't mind having those threads moved into the main gaming section.

I think it's a good idea as well

I think that would be appropriate. A separate mmo forum made sense when it was active with multiple posts for theorycrafting, raiding, and such. Now much of that is handled through community discords.

An MMORPG is just another type of game so makes sense. At one time it did have a ton of activity but there's only about 5 active threads going on now.

While I'm not really opposed to it, I think the favorites option might make it a moot point.

The decision predates my arrival here, I believe, but I think they split that off because, at one time, it would have completely dominated the main gaming forum. WoW was such an overwhelming presence in gaming that it was choking the life out of everything else. The forum split was a survival mechanism to gain the space to talk about other stuff.

I don't think there's any danger of MMOs overwhelming the main section anymore, and it might be nice to 'mainstream' those games back in with everything else, so they get some ancillary attention and maybe pick up a few recruits.

You'd probably want to ask over there, and then wait about a month to be sure everyone has checked in.

I'd be down for it moving although I do like that it's easy to find the threads I look at without having to use the search function.

There are really only 3 or so threads that I think would be able to hang on this board without falling off to abscurity though. I also wonder if new MMO's would get any notice here before falling off with how fast this board moves sometimes and how niche that market seems to be at this point.

I think having them separated means that even stuff that is seldom talked about stays "relevant" (i.e. still shows up) in the MMO section. Having MMOs in the regular gaming section just means they will sink into the depths of dead threads and, given the current state of the site search, will get re-created whenever someone gets excited for some MMO that already has a thread but cannot be located easily.

Personally, I don't care, but if you are looking for more visibility for MMO threads, tossing them into the regular gaming churn seems like it will result in less visibility for them.

I know this has been talked about before but what about re-organizing the Games & Platforms section? I'd honestly like to see a section for PC and one for Consoles. Then potentially split by broad categories: Action, Adventure, Sports, Strategy, MMO, RPG, All Others, etc. or something similar.

Now that's just crazy talk

Games are games.. makes no sense to split them by platform. I mean the whole PC Master Race bullsh*t aside its far more reasonable to split by genre.. for example we could have a Dark Souls Like Forum, a Roguelike Forum, a Metroidvania Forum, and then finally a FOTM forum... oh we could also stick Veloxi in his own forum for Space type shooting games.

Also the MMORPG section only made sense back in 2004-6 when all anyone on GWJ seemingly played was WoW... For the Horde!

Wow classic dropped... going to have a huge rebirth of that forum section... probably not. Makes sense to bring them all back into the main gaming threads.

I mean the dominating threads have been WoW, FF14, and ESO for ages. Occasionally something else will break the top 5 but those ones are staples and I can't remember the last time they aren't on the first page.

I think breaking things down by genre is an interesting idea but I like seeing things out of my comfort zone sometimes.

I haven't played Slay the Spire but likely will because I constantly see it's thread activity and mentioned on the games board. I would never even know about it though if it was located on a CCG board as I never check.

Same goes with sports games I will never peek at that board but what if one day some really ground breaking game comes out that defines the genre? I'll never see it.

Just a reason I think having one big board is a better idea. I basically use you guys as my litmus test, I trust the opinions here far more then traditional review sites at this point.

I like that I can find things there quickly right now when I want to, and since I always use `All Recent Content` or `My Recent Content` to find new posts I don't think I miss anything. But maybe using those isn't the norm that I assumed it was.

I'm skeptical that moving them back to the main games section would induce more conversation though, and I suspect they will just end more more easily buried by everything else, requiring the not-always-useful search function to find relevant MMO posts.

Also agree they’d just end up buried here and harder to find when you want to post something.

The thought occurs: is it possible, with this forum software, for threads to be listed in more than one forum at the same time? Having anything posted in MMO also showing up here (but not the reverse) might serve both purposes at once.

One downside would be people starting MMO threads here; they wouldn't get linked correctly over there, if this is even possible in the first place.

Yeah - my entire point behind this post was to let all see the few topics that goes on in the MMO section. But I guess if it just gets buried here anyway by all the other topics, there is little idea behind that approach.

D&D is fairly dead atm too.

They chased out all the contrary voices over there, and a bunch of people agreeing all the time don't make for very useful or productive discussion.

I dunno, seems like it's been more useful and productive than it used to be. More listening to understand and less listening only to respond.

Really? For at least the last year around here, anyone daring to voice an unacceptable opinion is dogpiled and told what an awful human being they are. Easier and more satisfying to vilify than to persuade, I suppose.

D&D is probably the place to discuss the state of D&D.

Duly noted on the feedback. Merging it or not is pretty low on the priority list right now, it's not just a matter of flipping a switch.

Thanks for the discussion!
