Sorry I haven’t been about recently. I am working on something I’m excited about but before then I had a good number of false starts.
Here are a couple of paintings I did for my art groups. I was positive I’d have a small or large rebellion on my hands with the trainers in a tree (It’s a subject I’ve wanted to do for a good while but I needed a way of hiding the majority of lacing holes) but to my amazement everyone was onboard. The other is an old church (?) in Ireland close to a hotel my friends there run.
Love them both!
Sharing to keep the thread going and my mind from melting after Maduro's coup
Really happy with senior Rossellini here
Check out for more Rossellinis
Very nice. Great lips!
Very cool! I love her eyes!
Thanks guys, here's another Laura Guevara's really quick sketch (45 min aprox), love those beautiful green eyes of her
That works really well. Great expression and sometimes when you work quickly there’s an energy to it that’s hard to capture otherwise.
This one might be my favorite so far!

Necessity is the mother of invention. Its easier to get out of your own way because you just do. You don't think or self judge because you don't give yourself time for that. It is one of the big perks of rapid, and blind or semi blind contour drawing. The hair is a good example of that technique.
The likeness in this one is top notch. I know the actor despite not knowing her by her name.
I am also curious if because the hair is roughly sketched, it show cases the facial details.

.
Think you are confussing Laura here with someone else, she's a venezuelan singer could it be you're thinking about Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones? due to the "white" targaryen hair and brushy eyebrows?
Backstory for this is that she posted on her twitter about yesterday being her birthday, I scrambled to produce this as soon as possible with the main focus being to render an unmistakable likeness of her, which I'm positive I did. Picture is also heavily focused on her face so I tried to "blur" or keep everthing else vague, her earring for example is a vertical broad stroke with no proper lines. Also hair, just a general suggestion of a hairdo, some minimal contrast next to her far eye and behind the ear.

There is! some of my favourite pieces I can't help liking on Cara are like this, quick, economical, but incredibly life-like
This one might be my favorite so far! :)
thanks Mario, and thanks all for your input
Damnit! Now I am going to be completely distracted by figuring out who the actor I am talking about is.
The first name that comes to mind is Jenny Slate. While the likeness is good, that isn't who I am thinking of
There is also Constance Marie:
Heheh, no idea about these two ladies, this is Laura G.
As usual, I can see now the obvious differences, but I'm confident on having gotten the likeness, and her "spirit" close enough, I truly dislike those mechanical photorealistic pencils portraits you find around, if you have to make a grid to capture the resemblance it kills the fun IMO
I can see a faint resemblance with Constance thou, likenesses are weird and complicated, some people can't pinpoint, detect or identify common traits among different persons
I mentioned on the finished games thread that I'd been playing a few of the Shantae games (the earlier ones), so I tried my hand at drawing Shantae, specifically in her default outfit as of Pirate's Curse.
I had a bit of difficulty getting this one to look okay with the elevated perspective, as well as trying to strike a balance between the art-style of the Shantae games and my own style.
Super cool, Ravanon! Plus, Shantae is awesome!
Very dynamic and great hands.
Ok here’s a quick look at my haphazard process. I’ve spoilered must of it just to stop it being a screed.
1. I generally base my ideas on reference like a screenshot. This is one of the characters from Shadow of the Erdtree. I tilted the image, as you can see from the panel lines bottom right, so the perspective fits with my idea.
2. I created a new layer to work out my idea. I draw in colour to remind me it’s a reference drawing. I’ll decide later whether to use this to create new, final line work on another layer or remove it entirely to do a painting without lines (occasionally the reference lines are good enough that I tweek them and turn them black to be the lines for the final thing.)
3. On another layer I made a general airbrushed colour scheme for the background. I learnt that from painting in watercolour. It unifies the painting even if you hide most of it later.
4. I created another layer for the character painting. Generally, I go for lot of separate layers for characters, items, etc because it’s easier to edit them. My layers generally start out orderly but as I progress I end up with character work on the background layer and visa versa. Usually it’s too hard to untangle so, if I’m close enough to the end, I’ll live with it.
5. I realised at this point my reference didn’t show the lower half of the character clearly and it wasn’t the long smock I thought. I found new reference and changed it. I put books for shelves on a new layer and later I’ll do yet another layer for the shelves themselves. As you can see I jump about a lot doing bits and pieces that take my fancy.
6. I’ll bringing in bits of reference to help with specific details if necessary. At this point I decided to go without line work so I hid the reference layer.
7. A little while later I realised that I needed the reference lines for all the other details and turned them back on. I then proceeded to do quite a bit of character work on the reference layer. At that point I combined the character layer with the reference line layer so I could paint over or erase the coloured lines. It’s working well.
This is where I’m up to now.
Super interesting and detailed explanation, Higgledy! Thank you for showing us!
Quick Ponda Baba:
I recognise Ponda Babba’s face but I have no memory of his role in the movie.

Getting disarmed by Obi-Wan 20 minutes into A New Hope.
Oooooh. It’s coming back to me.
Yah. Poor guy was an architect and just got a promotion. Went to a bar in Mos Eisley to celebrate and ended up losing an arm due to a miscommunication ;P

Build another on?! Who's gonna pay for it? You? You got an ATM in that suit of yours?
Ah, poor Ponda Baba.
Now, the Weequay action figure from Return of the Jedi was one of my favorites when I was little:
Oh nice. Intimidating.
He does look intimidating. He would be a good Hall Proctor.
Here's another alien I loved as a kid, but whose figure I never had. My cousin did, and I was always jealous of him! Maybe Hasbro will release him in the Black Series at some point in the future...
I need to color both him and the Weequay today because I start my pre-school meetings tomorrow, so my summer break is coming to an end! Oh, the horror...
Looks like only one of the two is happening today:
Even better. Great use of white highlights.
Thank you!
