Wolfenstein: Youngblood (without F5)

When the last Doom came out, I quit after 1 level. Amazing game, outstanding graphics... but doors locked behind me and I couldn't backtrack to look for collectibles. Haven't played it since.

Youngblood is a pretty decent game... having to solo and drag another character around isn't terrible... they have it worked out so she doesn't feel like a baby-sitting quest. Banter... cut scenes... it's entertaining... but...

You get 3 lives... lose them... you dead. You and your sister revive each other. Works pretty well -- all in all.

I played the Terror Twins until they hit level 30. Worked for 45 minutes getting to a boss -- lost all my Mario hearts...

You're probably thinking -- game started you back outside the boss' area -- like one would expect.

You'd be wrong.

You start... the ENTIRE level over.

Restart the entire level? What happened to PC save anywhere... quicksave/quickload ? I can appreciate it if they had some interesting scheme for save/load... but this scheme just gives you 3 chances... and then you start... the ENTIRE level... all... over.... again.

So... that's it -- uninstalled -- done.

I was really looking forward to this but it didn't make a good first impression last night.

I played the first level with the AI partner which is a big MEH. Was disappointed that the first boss is just a big bullet sponge. I looked up YouTube videos to see if there was some mechanic I was missing but I guess it's just shoot him, shoot him again, then shoot him some more?

Anyway when I got to the boss fight I had a real living person join my game as the other sister, but after one attempt he just stood in the initial control room doing nothing and since we have shared lives I kept having to go revive him. I know he didn't go AFK becuase I would shoot at him or wave my knife in his face and he would crouch and stuff... He was just making an intentional choice to at best let me do all the work and at worst grief me.

Not a great experience.

Seemed like a buggy encounter to me, the boss lost interest at some point and disappeared. I think the script was set for him to end up outside so you could end him. Weird.

He goes outside once his health is almost gone so you can finish him off by sending him flying into the zeppelin engine. What I'm saying is that there is no more clever or interesting way of lowering his health than just tediously pumping hundreds of rounds into him.

I played through the second level on the Paris riverfront last night which was significantly better. The AI sister is at best completely ignore-able though, I mean Left 4 Dead had a better implementation of an AI co-op partner than this a decade ago.

I also find the system of needing to shoot certain enemies with a specific weapon type badly implemented: "OK to take down this guy's shield you need to use the weapon that has the little rectangles icon beneath it. NO, not little squares, little RECTANGLES, you FOOL!"

Finally, I'm disappointed by the soundtrack so far, I anticipated slaughtering Nazis in rhythm to some sweet synth beats and thus far I've barely noticed the game has a soundtrack at all. The Division 2 has better music than this.

How synthwave is this game? The trailers make it seems like it's very synthwave, and I liked that. Is the game itself very synthwave?

It's the same nazi dark'n'red art style all over, but with '80s technology thrown it. Think cassette tapes with '80s style rock music, computers with floppy disks etc.

I tried to play this co-op with a friend on a buddy pass, but unfortunately he kept getting screen freezes. Anyone else encountering technical issues? We'll try again either on another pc (he has a decent laptop as well) or after a patch or two.

Playing this with Amoebic (my actual real life twin) on Discord and its still rough. I can't imagine trying to play this with a stranger where you can't talk through anything. The UI jankiness aside, I'm having a lot of fun but like Raelic, the lack of a proper save-anytime or even HAVING ANY SAVEPOINTS makes this game a bit challenging and frustrating. You appear only able to save when you return to home base? I think?

I'm looking forward to playing it again. I can't vouch for having a buddy in voice coms enough. Makes a big difference.
