Felix “Twin Blazcs” Threepaper
Welcome folks, and happy “60th anniversary of Plan 9 From Outer Space” week! You may celebrate by wondering where all the old movies have gone.
It’s another week with a haystack of PC games coming out, but are there any needles in there? Arma 3 Contact is based on encountering aliens and marks the series’s first steps away from verisimilitude. Maybe they’re realistically simulated aliens, at least. Swords & Souls: Neverseen is a turn-based, action RPG where you train your skills by repeating actions, like in Oblivion. Unlike Oblivion, however, you actually have to show some skill to level up. For example, you can do target practice for archery, but your archery skill only increases if you hit the bullseye so many times. It’s like they made a whole game out of the tutorial. Turok: Escape from Lost Valley is a cutesy, third-person, grid-based action game that seems to have little relation to anything previously known as Turok, except there’s dinosaurs.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses hits the Switch this week. It’s only been about 12 years since the last not-handheld Fire Emblem game, so this feels like a big deal. When you’re not engaging in the trademark tactical battles, you guide your character through school life. Honestly at this point, I just assume that all JRPGs are set in schools.
This week’s GOTW goes to Wolfenstein: Youngblood. One of the things that has made this franchise revamp successful is the creators’ commitment to their crazy alternate history timeline. For this game, we’re in the alterna-80s playing as BJ Blazcowicz’s daughters. Like with Stranger Things, I keep thinking each entry in this series takes the conceit about as far as it can go, but like with Stranger Things, they keep finding interesting stories to tell in this world. Plus the shooting’s mad fun. This time Arkane Studios is involved, so hopefully Wolfenstein won’t be jumping any sharks just yet.

You've never known true joy until you've shaken a lich stick at someone.
Ooh, the Kill la Kill game is this week. I’ll have to give that a look-see.

Holy crap, I just found out that Wolfenstein: Youngblood is basically Borderlands. That's ... weird.
How did I live before digital distribution of old, cheap games?

Kill la Kill has a demo, and it’s surprisingly good once you plow through the fifteen minutes of opening cutscene.
Not sure if it’s $60 good, but it’s definitely wishlist material for sure.
