Welcome folks, and happy “Voice Actor Pamela Adlon’s birthday” week! You may all celebrate by realising how weird it is that there is a connective tissue running from the original Fallout to King of the Hill and then Louie. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon, huh.

Streets of Rogue emerges from 2 years of Early Access this week. It’s a roguelike with a top-down, pixel look, like Cannon Fodder (or, if you want a reference from this century, Nuclear Throne). You do missions in a procedurally-generated city, but there’s a Deus Ex-style versatility to how you achieve these missions, depending on which character you choose. You can opt for the boring soldier and gun your way through, the sneaky doctor who tranquilizes, chloroforms, and shrinks people, the thief who picks locks and walks through walls, the gorilla who finds other gorillas and sets them on people, and more besides. I’m a sucker for games that offer non-lethal solutions to problems, and it promises wacky hijinks depending on how creatively you can get various game elements to interact.

Gearbox brings us Penn & Teller VR: Frankly Unfair, Unkind, Unnecessary and Underhanded, which is conveniently titled to be shortened to Penn & Teller VR: F U, U, U & U. This game prides itself as being a “tortuous toy box” that allows you to play “cruel magic tricks” on your friends. I would have thought that VR was still trying to get members of the general public to trust that they won’t be murdered when they put on the helmet. Is it too soon for a VR prank game?

SolSeraph is half an action-platformer and half a city-building, tower defense game. It touts itself as a spiritual successor to ‘90s SNES game, ActRaiser, which will be enough to make some of your ears prick up.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 gets a Western release this week, despite being out in Japan since last December. I suppose when you put a story into your Minecraft-clone, you need to do a sequel rather than simply keep updating the game. This one includes co-op, fast travel, flying and swimming, and a new story, natch.

I’m still not used to Nintendo’s openness to cross-platform releases, but it’s good. Tiny Metal: Full Metal Rumble comes out on PC and Switch this week. It’s the second entry in this Advance Wars-alike, turn-based strategy franchise. What’s new this time around? Well, obviously there’s a new campaign. The tactical choices are more varied, with options to push enemies back or hold fire to sync with other allies’ attacks. And there’s multiplayer. Oh, they’ve also added mechs. That’s enough for a GOTW, despite the very anime storyline.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Comments

SolSeraph is from ACE Team so I'm certainly curious. Their games rarely are home runs for me, but they're willing to do new and interesting things with whacky art, so I'm always interested. If it feels like Abyss Odyssey did, then I'm out. Abyss Odyssey was a great concept, putting Smash in a 2D roguelike brawler/fighting game. I hated how it felt to play though.

Blazing Chrome Looks like a cool Contra throw back.

I'm more into Dragon Quest Builders 2. Going to make train stations.

Uh, this looks bad ass.

Blazing Chrome looks amusing.
