My Time at Portia

Pages

How is there not a thread for this game already? For those who don't already know, My Time at Portia is a game on par with Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon. It's been out on Steam for a bit, but was just released on consoles last week.

Ooh ooh, I'm playing this! Was following it on the PC and waiting for it on console, picked it up on Switch. I'm enjoying it so far, buuuuut:

PSA: the console versions (Switch, XBox, and PS4) are several versions behind the PC version and missing quality of life features and bug fixes. The developer has said they will catching the console versions up with the PC version in the next patch slated to land in 4-5 weeks.

Performance is ok-ish on Switch for me: lots of UI lag opening the inventory screen, and some animation lag when mining or cutting trees. It's not bothering me so far as I'm loving the crafting based gameplay.

Portia is a pretty special game and I've got a strong feeling it will be making my Top 10 list at the end of the year. Fell head over heels for it a few months back and have dropped over 40 hours into it since (not even close to filling out the tech tree, home base, etc.).

At first it feels like a production management game. Crafting materials that feed into crafting bigger & better materials, etc. But then the game starts to open up with legit story beats, relationships (marriage & children), seasonal town events, dungeon crawling and more. The further you dive in the larger the scope reveals itself.

Game also has charming graphics & a splendid soundtrack. The world is gorgeous with awesome water-color, post-apocalypse presentation that's colorfully & happy rather than drab & edgy. Voice acting is kinda hit & miss. Though MAJOR props for having the first main-character male voice option [out of 3] sound openly gay...earnest and not a slapstick parody either.

Another thing I enjoy is that major construction goals & milestones are all book-ended with story beats. So there's an intelligent upgrade path on the tech tree where you're strung along with bits of story. Makes you feel like you've got a purpose for the grind, and keeps the game from feeling repetitive, a common symptom of the crafting genre.

Portia is a really charming Stardew/Harvest Moon experience that's got a ton of heart and a unique identity. It's not perfect by any means, but I think it ranks with the best.

I've been keeping my eye out for this, my backlog is pretty full at the moment, but I'll keep an eye out on a sale. Anything important missing right now from console vs PC?

I can only speak about the Nintendo Switch, but there's a lot of lag, especially with loading screens. It takes a full minute to load the save file. And when it switches to a cutscene, there's a half second of complete blackness, that makes my heart jump, because I'm afraid the game has crashed and I've lost that day's progress. Switching between menu screens is also very laggy.

I've encountered a couple of issues. In one, I got stuck. It was a fight, but I couldn't fight back, due to having no ranged weapon, and I couldn't move, either. It was at the beginning of a bridge. I reset and started the day over, only to encounter the issue again. That time, I just waited the clock out, and got my free teleport to my bed at 3am.

Oh, and the research center is looking kind of strange lately...

If I walk up on that mount (the grass was summer, the dirt autumn), and press A, I can walk right in and everything is fine.

tl;dr: for now, I say go with PC. Console is also behind PC in terms of updates, though the plan is for a huge update in May.

Yeah, I’ve encountered another bug: I can’t talk to anyone. It makes it hard to turn in quests when all you do is push villagers around. I’m going to sleep and reload the game, but I’m leaning toward setting it aside until May’s update. Hopefully that will bring some much-needed stability to the Switch version.

I just found this thread! Finished the main storyline last week after 95 hours. There's a bunch of minor flaws (translation, grindy nature, the horse racing portion sucks, combat doesn't offer much, forced combat sequences, boob window, audio mixing, and some more) but I really liked it. It has a different focus than Stardew Valley and the world is an interestingly fun take on the apocalypse.

Was this on Console or pc? I have it on console but is wary of starting before the elusive promised May patch!

I played on PC.

Boob window?

I was too afraid to ask.

I tried out the demo briefly back in February and I think it mentioned being on an older patch, but what I played felt kind of unfinished, like an Early Access game. Does the full game actually feel complete? It may have just been that listlessness/emptiness at the beginning of a crafting/open world game.

Oh, yeah, Phyllis. I didn't even notice. Sexy nurse trope, etc. She seems like a one-off so far.

Yeah, she must be a standout 'cause everyone I've run into otherwise has felt completely non-sexualized.

Well, unless you consider Oaks.

She’s the only one in the game dressed like that. It’s just an odd choice given everyone else. I think Phyllis was the second character I ran into so it was pretty jarring.

Hm need to keep an eye on Switch patches.

I'm not really all that bothered by someone, especially a woman, dressing sexily. People like to look and feel sexy. If her entire character is defined by her sexuality, that could be problematic, but someone being sexy and dressing like that is not necessarily a problem. I'd dress in more provocative ways if I were more confident in myself, for instance.

I be dressing sexy all the time for the ladies....maybe some of cute guys also.

Yeah, that's pretty much my take on it. It's not like they double down on the trope by having her fawn over the doctor (that role is reserved for a man, actually!). She's a consummate professional; half the time I talk to her, she's mentioning how she's learning from the doctor with the goal of opening up her own practice. However, I completely understand and respect Vector's discomfort.

My 7-year old daughter loved playing Stardew with me, and although she still asks for me to load it up, I have wrung every drop of enjoyment out of that game (100+ hours, completed the community center, at 8-10 hearts with just about everyone). I've been planning to buy another farming-type game to play with her soon, and was debating between this and Farm Together (about which I've heard a tiny bit; I gather it's a less involved and more farming-focused game than Portia). I will probably buy this in the next couple of weeks on Xbox.

Any idea why there are listings for physical copies of this on Switch and PS4 but not Xbox? I get 20% off all physical games from Best Buy for at least another week or two (stupid expiring GCU) so I'd buy this on a disc if I could, but it doesn't seem like it's an option for Xbox for some reason...

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/my-time...

Looks like BB has it listed as coming out next week (5/14).

Delayed launch, perhaps?

Oh, nice! It was initially only listed for PS4 and Switch, and I checked back every couple of weeks without any changes. I guess they finally updated it when I stopped looking.

eta: D'oh, they're not doing free release day shipping, and it's not available for in-store pickup at the only Best Buy within 100 miles of me (which is very odd for a pre-order), so I might as well order it digitally on Xbox if my $6 discount is offset by $4 shipping plus tax.

Holy crap, the PC version is so much better! Did you know there’s voice acting, and more character creation options? The Civil Corps patrol on horseback! I can make antidotes!

The Switch version is so much trash. I’m going to be playing the PC version with my Xbox controller from now on.

(This May or May not have been influenced by the Switch version crashing right after I beat a boss.)

For some reason my 360 wired pad wasn't recognized by the game, is there something I have to do to make it work with the game.

Don’t know. I just plugged and played with my 3rd party wired XboxOne controller.

I played on PC with a Xbox 360 wireless controller and a Xbox One elite controller wired in. Both were fine.

And, yes the PC version is fantastic.

This game is fantastic! I picked it up yesterday and regret not getting it earlier for whatever reason. Thanks to you all for the discussion otherwise I might have missed out.

Nice to hear you're enjoying it!

The game really is a gem.

What platform did you go with?

I am PC only.
