Welcome all, and happy “29th anniversary of Twin Peaks” week! You may all celebrate by playing Deadly Premonition, or simply by having some damn fine coffee.

The games industry has done us a solid by offering up a relatively quiet week, leaving room for Game of Thrones hype. If you get bored during the feature-length premiere, then check out the licensed reskin of the popular rule-by-Tinder game. Already on a number of platforms, Reigns: Game of Thrones launches this week for the Switch.

If you’ve never had a 3DS or just missed out on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney up until now, the whole dern trilogy is coming out across all platforms this week, with high-res upgrades to look good on bigger screens. Take that!

Falcon Age is a game about raising and training a falcon, with themes about retaining cultural practices in the face of colonization. It has VR support and looks pretty chill.

Alternatively, Dangerous Driving does not look chill, but in a good way. Made by the studio founded by former creators of Burnout, it looks like more of the racing-with-takedowns formula, but with added pursuit modes. Given that Burnout Paradise is still on high rotation at our house, this sounds like a good thing.

I’ve never quite understood why Earth Defense Force isn’t bigger in Western markets. Pickin’ loadouts, shootin’ bugs (thousands of bugs), grabbin’ loot; I mean, what’s not to love? Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain seems to be aimed at conquering Western hearts. It’s set in a generic United States and offers a little more polish on the general mayhem and collateral damage that EDF has been serving up for 5 installments now. If you were impressed by the crowd sizes in Hitman levels or the boss sizes in God of War, wait until you see a UFO take up half the sky, vomit out a swarm of dozens of car-sized beasties, and you have to take ‘em all out. What are you waiting for? GOTW.

I'd be more into EDF Iron Rain if EDF5 hadn't come out in late November...

Dangerous Driving is likely a buy for me, even though I'm sure it's gonna not be anywhere near as good as Burnout because I've played the developer's earlier titles in Danger Zone 1 and 2. Those games were really great ideas let down by poor tech. The driving was super twitchy, the physics were bonkers in a bad way, the camera was always at a bad angle, and the cars either crashed too easily or were indestructible. It's like they missed the sweet spot on every aspect, honestly. But even then Danger Zone 2 is still a fun, Burnout-like experience so I'm hoping Dangerous Driving sees them refining everything a bit more for a quality title. I don't think it'll happen though since it's still a budget title from a small team. But there's hope!

It's also a direct sequel to Insect Armageddon, which was missing that secret ingredient that made the Japanese developed titles so magical. I'm not sure if it was "too polished" or if it took EDF's ingredients and made them more conventional.

I wish I had a good example to use, but it's like you're taking a B-movie and trying to make it a real movie masquerading as a B-movie. Sometimes you can pull a Mars Attacks! and make it work, but most of the time it's missing too much of the sincerity that makes B-movies what they are.

As for me, I had already pre-ordered the Ace Attorney trilogy and started playing this morning, and I'm hooked again. I absolutely adore this series.

Me and my son recently finished up with EDF5 so we are eagerly looking forward to Iron Rain this week.
