E3 2019 Predictions & Wishes

Square Enix conference/stream set for June 10th at 6pm PT/9pm ET. Last year's presentation turned out to be a bit of a dud for a lot of folks. While Babylon's Fall gained excitement due to being a Platinum game, there wasn't enough information to really fuel fires. It's also where The Quiet Man was announced, which turned out to be a dud beyond duds. I imagine folks are hoping for FFVII Remake info, but I'm hoping for more Babylon's Fall gameplay, the announcement of the new Bravely game, and... well, it's wishful thinking to hope for Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, or better ports of the 8- and 16-bit era Final Fantasy games or a port of Final Fantasy Tactics to modern hardware, and naturally I'm always hopeful for a new Theatrhythm. Will the Mana series get a proper continuation beyond a mobile title? Is three years long enough for a new Star Ocean? I guess Crystal Dynamics is making that Avengers game...

This is one I'm naturally quite interested in, but don't know if I should hold out hope for.

Anyway, here's the complete show outline so far.

  • Microsoft – June 9 at 1:00 p.m. PT / 4:00 p.m. ET
  • Bethesda Softworks – June 9 at 5:30 p.m. PT / 8:30 p.m. ET
  • PC Gaming Show – June 10 at 10:00 a.m. PT / 1:00 p.m. ET
  • Ubisoft – June 10 at 1:00 p.m. PT / 4:00 p.m. ET
  • Square Enix – June 10 at 6:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. ET
  • Nintendo - June 11 (presumably 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET?)

I have really low expectations for Square-Enix, but I'm optimistic that at least this year's E3 presentation won't be dominated by Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy XV.

Right?

Get ready for FFXIV x Kingdom Hearts 3!

Actually, in all seriousness, they'll probably show off some of the planned FFXIV x Nier: Automata content. Probably some new Dissidia thing, too. I wouldn't be surprised if there's Kingdom Hearts III DLC, but I have no clue what more you would do with FFXV at this point.

Probably something involving their mobile stuff.

With Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 4 done, though, I'm curious what their Western branch will be putting out. The Crystal Dynamics Avengers game is the only thing that I know of that's been in development a while. Deus Ex is in cryo, and... dare they try Thief again? Do they need to dedicate more time to Dragon Quest XI on Switch? (They will, but do they need to?)

EDIT: And LimitedRunGames just announced their own show on Twitter. It will also be June 10th, 12pm PT/3pm ET. They typically release indies and obscure games in physical form, many of them in wonderful collector's boxes. I missed my chance to get their Switch release of Iconoclasts in a replication SNES box, which is just an example of how awesome they can get. They'll also be announcing their final wave of physical Vita releases.

Last year's stream was incredibly low-budget, but there was a weird fusion of self-awareness mixed with sincerity that made it nice to watch. It'll help kill time before Ubisoft's stream, at the very least.

With the DLC being canceled and the director leaving the company, one can only think that FFXV has finally been exorcised wound down. I'd like to see more of Babylon's Fall, the inevitable Bravely sequel, and hopefully something new from Yoko Taro, but I expect to see Kingdom Hearts 3 DLC and probably some other Nomura project that won't exist for another decade. The Western half of the company will continue to work on that Avengers game that probably also won't exist for another decade.

I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment, but a Mass Effect or Dead Space trilogy remaster would be amaze-balls.

Here are my predictions for the big reveals for each Presser

Microsoft - Halo Battle Royale
Bethesda - Fallout 76 Battle Royale
PC Gaming Show - Lots of Battle Royales
Ubisoft - Division 2 Battle Royale
Square Enix - Deus Ex Battle Royale
Nintendo - Switch in Different Colors

The available colors will be decided with an on stage battle royale.

Along the same lines I would love to see the three original Splinter Cell games get remastered.

As for Square Enix isn't it about time for them to announce FFXVI for release in 2024 or so? And they will need to remind us that they are remaking FFVII (even though it has barely started pre-production). Maybe more of the lackluster ports of classic games that they have done for cellphones will get ported to other systems/services.

One could say it's a Battle Royale of Battle Royales.

I'd play the hell out of a Final Fantasy Battle Royale.

I'm genuinely shocked that there isn't a Final Fantasy MOBA yet.

Called Rival Wings. It is part of FFXIV.

And we now have a spreadsheet/graphic with a bunch of the info, but not all of it.

Wow, this is next month. That snuck up on me. Sony isn't even doing one of their pseudo-Directs?

Nope, not this time, they're literally ignoring the whole event.

There's still time to announce a State of Play and pretend to do their own thing like EA tries to pass off, but at this point I think they are trying to see what everyone else does and structure their announcements based on what the competition is doing. Word is Wired only got that PS5 exclusive because they had some leaked documents and Sony decided to strike a deal and control the message. Otherwise it's a weird pseudo reveal that leaves way too much to speculation and gives Microsoft the chance to adapt and change their own messaging. So my theory is that they are still planning to repeat their PS4 strategy, which was to largely follow Microsoft and adjust to how people responded to the Xbox One.

Yay! Devolver doesn't publish many games that get me excited, but their E3 conferences are just the right kind of weird.

"This year's lineup, revealed today, is led by Epic Games store, which joins the PC Gaming Show as presenting sponsor. Epic Games will reveal brand new material for several games, including some exclusives, coming to the Epic Games store."

I'm sure this will go over incredibly well.

Annapurna Interactive, Chucklefish, Digital Extremes, Digital Uppercut, E-WIN, Fatshark, Fellow Traveller, Frontier Developments, Funcom, Modus Games, Paradox Interactive, Perfect World Entertainment, Raw Fury, Rebellion, Re-Logic, and Tripwire Interactive all confirmed present at this year's PC Gaming show.

17 E3 2019 Games To Get Excited About

Despite being kinda a last minute thing, I thought their first attempt at a showcase was extremely impressive, so I'm looking forward to seeing this. The first one was almost exclusively smaller titles that aren't likely to receive screen time at bigger conferences. It's probably safe to expect that again.

I'm hoping that Ubi announcing a Singapore track for their Pixel initiative means that Skull & Bones isn't dead and we see something new. Ever since they lost their game designer a year ago they've announced a TV show and absolutely nothing else since. Complete silence.

They actually announced today that it's been further delayed. Don't expect to see anything about it at E3 this year.

I'm glad they've delaying it. I suspect Anthem was the canary in their coal mine.

Not really related. Div2 has shown they're not even close to emulating what they did.

Just remembered: Development for Evil Genius 2 should be moving along nicely now. It would be great if we saw something at this point

Dollars to donuts it's revealed as an Epic Store Exclusive at the PC Games Show.

According to Push Square we’re getting a new trailer and a release date for The Last of Us Part 2 before the end of the week. Hopefully it’s a multiplayer trailer. I guess the beauty of Sony not being at E3 is they can show their stuff before E3.

Edit: Apparently there is little to no truth in this. I should have known. Damnit.
