Apex Legends - A Titanfall Battle Royale

There's a YouTuber with a ton of great Apex content, and particularly just a few gameplay commentaries, called The Gaming Merchant. I just messaged him today saying I like the commentaries and please do more. He almost immediately replied that he would.

He's only got like three right now, and you have to really read the titles to figure out that that's what one or two of them are. But, he's also got some great guides. He is very dispassionate in his narration, but the quality overcomes it.

Just use Discord. If I am playing with Pubbies — I just use the ping system.

Anybody feel free to add me on PC and PS4. On both I'm Keepcrom. I'm playing much more on PC and have started hanging out in the discord more. On PS4 if I'm on Apex it's me, any other game is most likely the wife or the kids.

This.

Also was it always a pack at every other level or was it changed? I could've sworn it used to be every level.

How do you manage voice comms between Discord and Apex? Do you just use Discord and mute Apex? Also, open mic or push-to-talk?

As for on discord people use both open/push. Really depends on how much noise you have around. I'm a single guy with a quiet house so I use voice activated. Some use push to talk if they have noise around.

As for in game i rarely need to talk but use push to talk occasionally. Pretty sure Ranalin has 2 different push to talk keys one for Discord one for in game (which he rarely uses).

Don’t sleep on Gibraltar

Today I had the good fortune to get matched up with a rando who was basically the Yo-Yo Ma of playing Gibraltar (if Gibraltar were a cello) in that he could seriously make that big guy sing from the top to the bottom of his range. This player was amazing at spotting and containing enemies with his shield drop ability, gun mounted shield, and heavy weapon fire. Bangalore and myself as Lifeline would simply flank and provide enough harassing fire from the sides to turn the area in front of Gibraltar into a death box littered slaughter zone. The combo of Gibraltar and Bangalore also bringing in air strikes and mortar barrages with their specials was particularly awesome to behold (and actually was how we wiped out two entire squads). Bangalore got knocked down a few times, but between Gibraltar throwing down a shield with some cover fire and my shielded revive abilities to cover the flank, it was super easy to get her back in the fight.

In the end, we utterly dominated the game and won the game with a total of 17 kills (12 of them Gibraltar, 3 for Bangalore, and 2 for me with 3 revives). I’ve read a few articles about how Gibraltar is the weakest character, particularly with his massive hitbox, but that game helped me to realize that in the hands of the right player, he’s pretty unstoppable.

Check the articles again. Don't believe anyone thinks he's weak. Just that his hitbox is so big. Like 144% more so than Wraith. There's absolutely nothing wrong with his kit and people can and do, do work with him.

They copied the Overwatch approach, every level til 20, then just odd numbered levels.

Such a great run today. So many top 3 finishes and then had one stretch where we won, came in 2nd but was still champions, and then won the next 2 in a row.

Had some fun games with Otaku, Le0, and fuzz tonight. No wins, but fuzz & I got to final two, then couldn't overcome the high ground advantage. Sometime we'll all sync up and have a full GWJer 3-stack

I think getting named Champion got to my head.

Don't forget the rubbish run of luck we had with a few poor drops on the trot. In the one game I scored more damage punching the also unarmed robot than I do in some geared up games

When I continued for a bit with ransoms after had another #2, a #3 and a few meh matches.

In the #2 I revived the player with all the super kill/damage stats on the squad screen. After that they kind of took me under wing a bit for the rest of the match and helped make sure I got through a few frantic skirmishes (well frantic for me).

I've noticed this a fair bit, even with randoms and no voice if I make the effort to revive / respawn team wherever possible at the beginning of the match then they'll do the same moving forward, the pubbie team more likely to stick together and more often than not survive for longer.

Maybe it's a coincidence and reading too much into it and I might not have played many or dropped really quick, but I've not really experienced that in pvp shooters before, not as strongly anyhow.

Pve in the division sure, but player Vs player team play, it is stronger here than in Overwatch for sure. In random games that is and for me anyway.

The % of bad experiences with the odd toxic player on voice has been miniscule so far. Touch wood.

The interwebs are vast indeed so perhaps we’ve just chanced upon different articles. My reading comprehension is pretty decent and though my memory isn’t what it once was, I can certainly remember things I’ve read in the past week — It’s not hard to find character rankings that put Gib at the bottom. That said, I think we’re on the same page that there are folks out there who use him quite well; I certainly got to see that today in real-time.

Anyway, happy gaming my friend and much respect if you’re a Gibraltar player!

This is the first battle royale type of game that I've ever properly gotten into – or even shooter for that matter – so it really took me a lot of time to get into this making loads of rookie mistakes along the way. I'm not super good at this game, but I manage to get 1 to 2 kills on average per game by now, but as I mainly play Lifeline, I'm more focussed on healing and keeping team mates alive anyway. My one big problem though – and from what I've heard this seems to be a problem in general – I only solo queue because... well... none of my friends play these type of games (I live in Germany and my colleagues and friends ONLY (that is not an exaggeration) play FIFA) which makes every game a gamble. More often than not I end up in a squad with suicidal 12-year olds that like to drop in hot zones and die within 3 minutes... who, additionally talk trash into their mics with their parents shouting in the background...

So, long story short, if there is anyone here in Europe who would like to team up and is looking for more squad mates, just send me a message... I play on PS4 if that's important information...

UK and PS4 here, Higgledy same. Scroll back a page or two and you'll find a few more shout outs for PS4, not 100% on timezones but have managed a couple game with these GWJ folk later eve GMT.

Edit. Oh and what's your PSN name?

Yeah! It was fun to have everyone mic’d up and rolling! We had a lot of interesting firefights. Then the servers went down on PS4. It only lasted for a bit. Beforehand, when initially dropping and full squads were on the map, it felt like you were in molasses. Had everyone moving so slow.

Then after they came back up, I solo queued for a couple hours and got 2 more wins! The last one was my favorite!

I was the highest level player at 23 and my teammates were around 10th with not a lot of kills and no other badges for wins. But we managed to drop quickly into Swamp Town (not sure if that’s the right name? Swamp with the zip lines on one edge of the map) by ourselves. As Lifeline, I got a bunch of accelerants for my ult and we all geared up HARD. We never saw action for a long time and the Red Circle of Death God smiled upon us as the circle kept closing in our favor. Then, as only 4 teams were left, action begins to pop off above! The sewer pipes to the North are the spot of a massive battle between the other three teams! I ping the enemies and watch far below as the battle rages. My buddies immediately start popping shots from well out of my Peacekeeper and Flatline’s range. I shrug and resign myself into having to run towards the fray, as our position was given up. Fortunately, my teammates follow and we get to the pipes right as the announcer says “only 2 teams left.” I wait at the top of the hill for my squad but am worried about giving the other team time to heal up. We’re at the edge of the circle as it starts to close and I see movement as one of the other squaddies comes out of the pipes and takes off TOWARDS the hill and TOWARDS the ring that is closing. I break their shield as they run behind a rock and throw an arc star at them. But the ring is closing on them. They come running back down right towards my Peacekeeper and I finish them off. At this point, I had moved up and was taking shots from one of the other of their teammates. I go barreling back down the hill through a wall of thermite and get behind a wall and drop my drone as my teammates battle with the rest of the squad. But our Wraith goes down and I race towards her to rez her. As I’m getting her back up, our third (speaking of good Gibraltar players!) is going one on one with the remaining one baddie. And Gib pulls out the win for our low level squad! Everything went right and broke in our favor, but even a squad of lowbies can take the W!

Added you. I am always looking for others on PSN to play this game (or Overwatch). Add me tlhero50. I am not great but I will absorb bullets for you.

I just got my first win today!

This is a big deal for me as it is my first win EVER in ANY BR. And I've got something like 110 hours in PUBG and got into the top 5 there maybe twice... Stoked!

Right and i was saying the primary reason they rank him at the bottom is due to his large hitbox. Biggest in the game. Not due to his kit.

I'm actually playing all characters. Working on the 'well balanced' badge. 5/8 so far and happen to be on Gibraltar at the moment

Gib is often ranked towards the bottom and could use some buffs. However, Caustic is usually more middle of the pack yet has "almost" the same hitbox.

Larger hitbox is a negative but can be overcome by good abilities. Biggest buff I think Gib needs is is his passive shield when shooting needs an increase. At the moment it only tanks 1-2 bullets.

I think I need to stop aiming high torso/neck counting on muzzle climb for a headshot. It's a learned thing since CS 1.6. It really doesn't work for me in Apex. I need to focus center mass.

I'm also hopelessly addicted to this game and I run cold with occasional hot flashes (insert old joke here).

It works still with certain guns, but it goes away quick when you get the barrel attachment on them.

Trying to figure out a way to communicate without being an asshole shouting out orders all the time is rough. Especially since communication is huge, and it's sometimes hard to do in the middle of a fight until it's too late. Well at least the ability to explain tactics in real time that is.

There's a few groups of us where when someone pings an enemy location or hear gunfire i don't have to double check, i know we're all moving in that direction. If for some reason we can't we're calling out that we're behind.

The idea is to hit a team or player all at once. This game is a bit different than other BR in that 95% of the fights are fought and won in relative close range. So you need all bullets flying in as much as possible. An overwatch (tactic, not game) style of play that works in PUBG and some other BRs just isn't that viable in this one. Especially with the magazine sizes being so small. Lot of fights someone has to reload when having someone down to 10 or less health and that extra teammate's bullet is the difference between a win or a loss.

Aggressiveness wins more often than not. This also applies to picking a spot and jumping.

Unless you just mess up the jump (it happens!) don't waffle or second guess where to go. Commit fully and try to get to the ground asap. The few seconds where you hesitate in the air is enough difference for another group to get to the ground and guns first. Be aware if you're alone or not, but don't change directions just because you not alone. Always expect a fight. Even if you don't see anyone flying near.

I think everyone at this point is aware and know of the dolphin diving technique when jumping into a match. Things to be mindful of: 1 don't stop the dolphin diving. Unless you're dodging terrain and have to go a few seconds farther. Keep doing it. It feels weird, but you actually keep your momentum up that way and will go farther. 2 There's a minimum distance you can get to terrain with it triggering your final jump sequence. Try extending the horizontal a few seconds so you're clear.

We also have set patterns to the way we loot. Depending on the spot we almost ways split up to take different tracks of buildings and just go down that way to loot. Trying to loot behind another is exceptionally inefficient and moving back and forth between is as well. While there are exceptions we're also coming in to fight as we are when someone is getting attacked. No, we may not be fully kitted out, but again, more bullets at the bad guys the better our chances. If we're wounded and still have no gun we running to find at least some armor so we're maybe not a one hit chump.

Also don't be afraid of punching bad guys at the start in this game if you end up close to each other. Even if they have a gun. Each punch is 30 damage. If 2 players hits one at least twice they're dropping. Doing that can turn the tide quickly. Running away you're probably going to run into their mates and be chewed up anyway.

In the early game, unless you're in a hurry, save loot when finishing downed folks and punch them. Sometimes though you need to loot them in a hurry to get their ammo.

Some good tips there, Ran. What kind of comp do y'all usually run?

Actually, I'd love it if everyone in the thread would chime in with their favorite legend, comp, and load-out. All personal choice, no wrong answers. I'll start!

Legend: Mirage: I've played him the most, and I feel like his tactical really does help during engagements. I had a win recently where a bamboozle against the last squad played a key role.

Favorite comp: Mirage, Lifeline, and Bloodhound. I really, really like when we have a Bloodhound who takes point, since he has multiple tools to locate enemies and not just stumble into them. Lifeline obviously has a lot of utility. I would probably enjoy a Bangalore but I don't know that I've played with any Bangalores who have mastered her kit yet. Wraith occasionally helps the squad with a great portal but I mostly see her being a strong individual fighter because of her small hitbox and disengage. Hemi and I won a match last night with a Pathfinder main who found one of the last circles and used ziplines to get us the high ground well in advance of the final fight. I've also won at least two matches with Caustics whose gas was huge in the final fight. Gibby has a great kit but needs something to offset his huge hitbox.

Favorite load-out: Spitfire and R-301. When the game first came out I always had a shotgun on me, but lately I've noticed I've seemed to do better in 1v1s with a machine gun. I prioritize stability mods and mid-range optics for the R-301 (meaning it gets them first). If a Mastiff shows up I'll drop one of those two depending on the situation. I think every time I've gotten a Mastiff has been a win except for one where I got melted right as I was grabbing one off a loot drop.

Ok, sorta awkward since I now main her and have played more with Fed than anyone else, but...

Legend: Bangalore. Awesome passive to sprint when under any sort of fire (including grenades) to retreat, rush, or flank. Popping smoke creates panic, control, and flanking opportunities. When things go south, call in the heavy artillery to cause everyone to scat or wipe out a team if you're lucky.

Secondary Legend: Lifeline. If I'm not Bangalore, I'm Lifeline. Fast revives, healbot, and drops to upgrade the team's loot every so often are hard to beat.

Favorite comp: I also really like having a Bloodhound on the team, assuming they're actually paying attention to and pinging the tracking they're receiving. Caustic's area of control is nice in closer quarters too, especially when combined with Bangalore's smoke. Camp the open air and win.

Load-out: When I'm Bangalore, I prefer a Flatline/Devotion/R-301 and a Wingman or Peacekeeper. When I'm Lifeline I go for a G7-Scout/Triple Take/Longbow at distance with a Flatline/Devotion/R-301 secondary.

Honestly, I feel if you put more than 10 seconds even thinking about comp's in this game you put too much work into it. There are some small synergies (bloodhound/bang) but only work with his ult. For the most part play who you enjoy/know. This is a game meant to be balanced playing with randoms, not a game like overwatch.

Spitfire right now is by far best gun in game by leaps and bounds. If you have even level 1 attachments pretty stable and the clip size is nearly double any other gun with really no downsides. It needs to be nerfed but until it is you need to use it.

This... This is not like overwatch where a comp matters. Not to the point it does in overwatch at least not yet. People trying to stay in the back or up front based on class isn't really helping in the fights when it really matters.

Caustic, Mirage, Bloodhound are my favorites and most played, but we just run whatever. I mentioned before, but i'm working on getting the well balanced badge and playing them all at some point. We play whatever and make it work. Between Escher, Kazar and myself i think we're approaching 40-50 wins closer to the 50 side i think. It's hard to track with the way they bundle some of the stats together. We've all had a handful of wins without the others on top of that. I think i have at least 1 win on every legend at this point.

Also agree about the Spitfire. It's a beast. Outside of the Mozambique though i've learned not to discount the others quite as much either. Personally the way i play i pick the Hemlock over the Flatline. Followed by the Prowler unless i get the select fire hop-up and it moves up to just below the Spitfire for me. Then the Wingman, Peacekeeper, Carbine, 99. The rest i'll definitely not shy away from at the start but will swap out for one of the above asap.

Finally got my first win today! I was the jumpmaster and landed us in the outskirts. We were about as far away from the ring as possible so we basically never kept moving. Always gearing up and calling out enemies along the way. Got into two good fights mid way through which was basically cleaning up after two squads had it out with each other. Then we spotted the remaining squad and just kept pushing in on them on while they tried to retreat. Don't get me wrong, my squad carried me most of the way, but I got two knockdowns and a kill too.

Felt real good.
