It’s a good week for gaming, with something for any player regardless of what intensity they’re looking for.

Excive A-1000 looks like the kind of pulse-pounding, head-banging, first-person action that spins the barrels of my minigun. Robots have taken over something and you have to blow them all up. It’s just the thing to tide us all over until the new Doom comes out.

If that’s a little too frenetic for you, try Once A Stray, an action platformer in which you must defeat an evil necromancer (is there any other kind?), and save your city from a horrible undead plague. The catch? You play as a cat who is also a wizard. It looks surprisingly fleshed out for a free game, but I’m not going to look a gift kitty in the mouth.

If the idea of cats that can shoot fireballs still sounds too harrowing, try Strange Telephone. You play as Jill, who is trapped behind a mysterious door. Your only friend is Graham, a sentient telephone who will whisk you away to procedurally generated worlds based on the number you dial on him. Can you find the key in what is sure to be something of a pixel hunt? I don’t know, but its premise is enough to pique my interest.

If all that sounds too intense, you can try Dig to the Stars, which takes the core loop of No Man’s Sky and shrinks the scope. You control a lonely mining robot who just wants to leave Earth and find some new friends. Fortunately, you have a rocket ship; unfortunately, the rocket ship is broken. Good thing the robot can mine all of the materials to fix it. The game has a charming art style, and I’m always up for exploration and inventory management.

Still not chill enough for you? How about a strategy game in which you construct highways and railways to keep trade flowing? My favorite part of games like Cities: Skylines is the road building, and it appears Transport Services took that and turned it into its own game. If you’re like me and you like your games boring by design, this might just be for you.

My pick this week is is published by Devolver Digital, but you wouldn’t know it. The description from the developer is that it’s a dystopian adventure, so maybe there’s a late game turn where everyone starts exploding into fountains of viscera, but from the trailers I’ve found, it just looks like a charming puzzle platformer with some of the cutest characters this side of Loco Roco. Regardless, Pikuniku gets my pick for game of the week.

A special shoutout to The Great Emu War of 1932, which gamifies one of the more absurd episodes of Australian history (hint: the emus won). The game itself is a bare-bones, top-down shooter with a horde mode, and is probably not as satisfying as simply reading Wikipedia or listening to The Dollop podcast (ep 111). If you want a sneak peek of what I would talk about were I ever asked to go on Drunk History, do yourselves this favour.

It’s always a little unnerving to see a DLC schedule judder on, regardless of the game’s original reception. Shadow of the Tomb Raider: The Nightmare is amazingly the 4th bit of DLC, and sees Lara raiding her own manor. Tomb Raider games have done Croft Manor before, but will anyone care this time around?

Sweet little bard game Wandersong makes its way to PS4 and is worth a look/listen.

Otherwise, I’ll chuck my hat in for Life is Strange 2: Episode 2 - Rules. It’s another entry in a series strong on story-telling, and it’s interesting how the episodic release schedule allows the makers to be topical with their themes.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Not a single mention of the Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Maybe that's just too intense. After all, if you shoot all the limbs off a zombie he'll still waddle forward and try to bite your knees off.

A special shoutout to The Great Emu War of 1932, which gamifies one of the more absurd episodes of Australian history (hint: the emus won). So at first I thought you were "taking the piss", but I actually took your advice and looked it up and holy cow this really was a thing.

I want Edgar Wright to direct a movie based on it.

The short answer is that there are a lot of titles coming to Steam every week that have no English support, but some of the developers of such games include rough translations for English shoppers.
