The Pile Strikes Back - Pile of Shame January 2019

So, how did we do for 2018? Did we manage to sufficiently restock the pile for 2019 in the last two months?

You don't have to answer that. If you're here, we already sort of know.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month 2019 pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Picks of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

Thie month's Pick of the Pile is

Rime

  • Rime (Multi)
  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (Multi)

Thanks for doing these!

I think I'll start with Firewatch (Steam/Multi) and go from there..

I will start the year with:

  • Dragon Quest VII (multi)
  • Assassin's Creed II (multi)

DQVII should be done this weekend. I'm about halfway through AC2, so that one should be quick as well.

Last year was a pile tragedy. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't bought a PS4 and immediately loaded up on excellent games, because the system stirred in me a sense of excitement I hadn't felt since perhaps the Gamecube days.

Then I got a PSVR, was blown away by the experience, and went even more crazy.

Also there were Steam sales.

Let's just say that the pile is well stocked for years to come.

Carrying over Among the Sleep (PC/multi) from February and the year-end 2018 pile threads...and immediately marking it off, as I played through the final 40 minutes on January 1st.
The premise - a horror game from the perspective of a toddler - is a unique one, and one that needed to be (and was) treated with a great deal of care. I wondered if I would get through it, having a 2 year old myself now. While the game was scary and at times creative, it was the story that hit the hardest. As you experience Among the Sleep, the true nature of the monster and its underlying story are increasingly frequently and strongly hinted at, but it wasn't until the ending that the full impact truly got under my skin. As I told my wife about it the next day, I could feel myself starting to become emotional, and that is an impressive feat.
Among the Sleep does have a few issues that hold it back from greatness. It does seem that the toddler is surprisingly capable - almost like a really short adult. Another complaint that is voiced in some reviews is that the toddler appears to have an impressive grasp of some adult concepts, voiced through his companion - though perhaps the explanation rather works the other way around - giving voice to the toddler's vague emotional understanding in a way the adult player can comprehend.
I don't recommend it unilaterally, but it's definitely worth experience if it sounds interesting to you.

Also pledging:
Dead Island (PC/multi) for SallyNasty's game club. About 3 hours in already.
INSIDE (PC/multi) because I liked Limbo. Haven't started it.

I wanted to pledge Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (Gamecube), but I can not beat the "Strike at the Core" stage in spite of at least 40 attempts (most of which ended pretty quickly). It's very frustrating.

Jumping back on this horse for the start of a new year. I was relatively modest in my purchases in the sales, but I've accumulated a large surplus of adventure games that I'm working my way through.

I'm midway through Dreamfall: Chapters (PC/multi) so I'll commit to getting through that. I have strong emotional ties to the original games, and while I backed it heavily on Kickstarter, I'm finding now that I'm getting to play it that I'm deeply ambivalent about the new one.

I should throw something else on as well, so let's go with a classic: the remastered version of Full Throttle (PC/multi).

Put me down for:

Dragon Quest VII (3DS)
Song of the Deep (PC)

Rime is done!

Hoo-boy, did I ever fail on completing my pile picks for the end of 2018! Here's to new beginnings, right?

I did already finish one game this year and it's only been 4 days into the cycle, so there's that hopeful, promising start.

Declaring the following, which should be attainable.

Dead Space 2 (Multi)
Dead Island (Multi)
Timespinner (Multi)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Multi)
- it's about time I finished this. Now that I have all the memories, I really ought to polish off my guardian-beam parrying skills (I suck at this) and give the final dungeon the old college try.

That should go well.

I'm declaring RiME (Multi), Pyre (Multi), CHUCHEL (Multi) and Yorkshire Gubbins (PC only I think).
Oh and Seers Isle (PC), since I'm almost done with it.

Here’s what I’ve got:

Warhammer Total War 2
Frostpunk
Gardens Between
Red Dead Redemption 2

And, after almost 67 hours, Dragon Quest VII is now complete!

Oh, I will also like to add Soma (Multi), as it's on the short side and I've been playing it a bit for a few days, now.

Heya Hemidal. Stick me down for Tacoma (multi), Rime (multi) and God of War (PS4) please.

...and Tacoma is finished, was excellent!

After two playtrhoighs of Seers Isle.m, I think that’s all wrapped up. I’d have done more if they had the auto skip for text you’ve already seen. Quite the design oversight for a visual novel.

Please put me down for Rise of the Tomb Raider (multi) and Bravely Default (3DS). I have other titles in the mix, but those are my focus. Thanks!

I think I finally got enough grinding done in DQIX so that I can make a try at the final boss, so I am going to declare Dragon Quest IX (DS). Think I'll mostly be starting work on other games at this point, so I probably won't get to the end of another game this month.

Edit: Well, I leveled up too much, killed the last boss pretty quickly. So I am now watching the credits for Dragon Quest IX. I guess I will work on Neir Automata (multi) for the rest of the month.

After spending way too much time in front of the TV today, Assassin's Creed II (multi) is done! I had a great time with it! I briefly considered moving on to Brotherhood, but I think I will wait for a little while and switch to something else for a month or two.

Firewatch (Steam/Multi) is done. I managed to plunder all the different cache boxes around the map despite realizing super late that they all could be opened with the same code (blame having the audio turned down a bit during that part of the game when it was explained). There's still probably more easter eggs to find but for now, I must move on.

Next game to beat this month is Banjo Tooie (X360/Multi). I'm a bit hesitant to declare it since I've done so for many months now but I'm roughly halfway through as far as having enough jiggies to complete the game. It should be doable. The only potential hiccups will be that I'm also playing Persona 5 and I'll be picking up Kingdom Hearts 3 on release day too.

Dragon Quest VII is done! And, with some PlayStation credit left over from Christmas, I promptly added three others to the overall pile: Journey, Unraveled, and Celeste.

I’m also going to declare Algobot for this month.

I'm jealous that you get to play Journey for the first time

Same

I'm also jealous that you haven't played it yet, but probably for different reasons.

I'm very excited to try it out! Probably will give it a go this afternoon.

Also ... you know what, Journey's a short game, right? I'll declare it for this month as well.

About 1/50th of Persona 5

I finally finished Brutal Legend and boy that's a bad game...

Once the novelty of metal "royalty" wears off there's not much under the hood on that one.

I will declare Super Metroid (multi). I was looking for something short that I could play at the same time as another long JRPG, and that seemed to fit the bill. (Also I wanted to have something I could play as I listen to podcasts.)

Journey (PS4), declared today, is done! Once I started, I was strapped in 'til the end. What a gem.

Also, I forgot to mention, but I've finished Song of the Deep (Multi).

Still working on Algobot. It's easy to chip away at a level or two at a time. Thinking about whether to declare another game for the month, as well, but I don't want to overextend myself with DA:O and Persona 5.

Trails in Cold Steel. Vita version is ready and mysteries are being in raveled.

I just finished an undeclared game: The Mooseman. If I were to classify it, it would be a 2D walking sim with a few puzzle elements a-la-puzzle-platformer minus any actual jumping. Took me an hour and a half or so, in total.

Alright. Trails was originally released September 26, 2013. That is about 6 years for one game. Golly Gee and I finished it at today 1/15/2019. =) Maybe I can finish the second in 2025. What a good game!

P.S. Declaring Trails in Cold Steel 2.
