Very different style and sound for Dreamcatcher. I'm still trying to process this one.
It pains me a bit to say it, but this is the first title track of theirs I haven't enjoyed on first listen. I suppose it was bound to happen at some point.
It has grown on me a bit after a few more listens, but it's still solidly at the bottom of my Dreamcatcher title track rankings for now. Thankfully, I do like the rest of the mini-album.
The average conscripts I've worked with are treated like indentured servants by the career officers and senior NCOs. I'm sure that feels like a long two years.
I wonder how famous conscripts are treated in the ROK army. Maybe they'll perform in an army band.
Yeah as I understand it, they tend to get placed in relatively tame units (not the ones up next to the DMZ).
An example (not picking on him) is Choi Siwon of Super Junior fame. His parents are diplomats I believe and from a wealthy background. He served in the Seoul Metropolitan Police.
There's other examples I think where they get placed in army band regiments etc.
Happy Throwback Thursday everyone, and happy American Thanksgiving to those who celebrate. I'm chock full of turkey and stuffing myself, but I still have a few hours before the day is over so I'm squeezing in a throwback for a group I've mentioned in passing before but I don't think they've ever had a video on the thread, so let's correct that right now.
They debuted in 2012 and had a tough time of it for their first few releases; due to their lack of commercial success (and money) they had to resort to doing live guerilla performances around Seoul for whoever would watch them. Eventually they had a viral hit with their song 'Bar Bar Bar' and went on to promote for a few more years before eventually trailing off around 2015. Today we're featuring the song from so many of those guerilla performances they did, often in sub-freezing weather (fortunately, their outfits were much warmer than they might have been to to their concept at the time). Please enjoy!
Crayon Pop - Dancing Queen 2.0
Babymonster - Batter Up
The debut of YG's new girl group is out, and it is a certified banger! YMMV of course, but I really like this song. It is almost certainly gonna bump something out of my top ten. It reminds me very much of StayC's debut song 'So Bad' in that I'm actually a bit concerned about whether or not they can top it, it's that good IMO. I really liked BlackPink's first songs too, and then the later stuff didn't hit quite as hard. Hmm...maybe this is just me craving the next big dopamine hit.
Anyway, it's good. Congrats to Babymonster, and I hope Ahyeon is able to join the group at some point; I know many fans were looking forward to seeing her debut.
P.S. Just an FYI; if there's anyone out there concerned about the concept or whatever due to the age of the members, I went back and looked at the lyrics and didn't see anything that raised a red flag for me. The song is about wanting to win the hearts of the audience and coming out swinging in an effort to do so. Any other interpretations would be reading into things, IMO.
Counterpoint:
Spoiler:Baby batter is slang for ejaculate.
I'm not saying that's what they intended by pairing this song title with the group name, but someone along the way of production and choosing this as their debut song likely knew this and allowed it to happen.
Counter-Counterpoint:
Are you still snickering to yourself whenever you hear Purple Kiss' "Sweet Juice"? I've said it before, you gotta get your mind out of the gutter.
Happy Throwback Thursday everyone! I'm gonna dive right in with a group that, tbh, I've never really paid much attention to previously; I was heavily into SNSD at the time and didn't really follow many other groups so I kind of missed the heyday of this group. Also I went back and listened to some of their more popular tracks on Youtube and, for the most part, I wasn't feeling it, but there are a couple exceptions; we'll get into that shortly. Also, whatever you may think about the songs from this group, they were (IMO) actually more well known for their stage performances than for the songs themselves. Finally, this is the group that gave us the sub-unit Orange Caramel, which basically pioneered that particular concept and has been mimicked at least a few times since (WJSN's Chocome being the prime example)
Anyway, the group is (if you haven't figured it out already) After School, and this song from 2010 is probably their most famous release. Please enjoy!
After School - BANG!
VCHA - Ready for the World
I guess this is (according to the description on Youtube) still a pre-release song, but it's pretty good I guess. Lots of energy!
Happy Throwback Thursday! I wanted to start with a release I saw on Twitter via the
@nugudom account; this is an original song from a Youtuber who goes by the name xooos. She mostly does covers of other Korean and English pop songs and occasional vlogging, but this is an original song. The video is only a minute long, but if you go on the iTunes store it says it's around two minutes. The Youtube title says it's the 'Official Video' so I'm not sure if it's meant to be just a preview or what, but the song is pretty good so check it out and maybe try to find the longer version on Spotify or something if you like it.
xooos - Crush!
Okay, now on to the throwback! I saw this song when it was covered recently on the JYP competition show A2K and kinda dug it, so I went back and found the original from 2010. Please enjoy.
Wonder Girls - 2 Different Tears
on Twitter @nugupromoter just put up their Favorite Songs of 2023 thread. As a caveat, this list won't have any of the bigger groups in it such as New Jeans or Red Velvet (as they aren't 'nugu'), but it's still a nice source to check out if you feel like you maybe missed some stuff over the year. There's a link to a Spotify playlist at the end of the thread as well. I've been compiling candidates for Top Ten of 2023 but there's a couple tracks in this thread that made me reconsider my list.
Also, for any fans of BerryGood, former member Seoyul (going by E.SO now) just put out a solo release in English. Check it out!
E.SO - Perfect Crime
Happy Throwback Thursday y'all; first off, though, we got a performance video from Weeekly members Jihan and Jaehee for a song off of their most recent EP. It's super bright and energetic, so watch it in the morning to get fired up for the day.
Weeekly - A+
Other than that, not too much happening; a couple covers from Solar (Mamamoo) and Jiwon (fromis9) so go check those out if you're a fan. That being said, on to the throwback!
I found this deep in the playlist caverns and couldn't even remember putting it on there, tbh. This artist debuted in 2013 and was apparently runner-up on one of the first couple seasons of the Korean version of The Voice competition show. She's put out a few tracks over the years but mostly it seems like she does soundtrack work; that all being said, I listened back to this song and turns out, past me is not an idiot and I was vibing with it. This is a single she released after her debut album Be OK, so please enjoy!
U SungEun - Healing
... Itzy has us covered for new content soon. Starting next week you can expect a pre-release...
And here it is!
Itzy - Born to Be
happy Throwback Thursday y'all! I'm gonna get right into it and go back to the well a bit with Lim Kim. I had her song 'Rain' on a previous throwback but the album that is off of is chock-a-block with really great songs, and this track in particular features Swings, who is top tier in his own right; if you are into rap/hip hop I recommend checking his stuff out. Please enjoy.
Lim Kim - Voice
happy Throwback Thursday everyone, and happy New Year as well; I'm looking forward to hearing about some of your favorite songs from 2023 now that the year is over, so please post about them even if you normally prefer to lurk. I'd love to see some different perspectives!
My pick for the throwback this week is IU once again; I'd say 'going back to the well' but I never leave this well tbh. This is a song off of a re-package of her Modern Times album and it when I listen to it I get a feeling like a warm hug. Please enjoy!
IU - Friday
Hello, and welcome to my list of favorite Kpop songs from 2023! The top ten are ordered and then the honorable mentions are in no particular order. I also limited myself to one song per group just to spread the love around a bit more. That said, without further ado:
1. G-Idle - I Do
This song...I heard this the first time and felt a wave of nostalgia, which is weird because, you know, I'd never heard it before. But it sounds like something out of John Hughes movie and I am an old man who's seen The Breakfast Club about a hundred times so it worked it's magic on me right away. Yuqi is a highlight here IMO; she actually bias-wrecked me with her vocals (sorry Miyeon!). My only issue with the song is that it's all in English and I know there's some communities out there who would probably sniff their nose at it because of that but whatever, it's so good and G-Idle gets money from it so I decided not to let it ruin what is otherwise pretty much perfect. I really thought Billlie was gonna be my number one until this song came out. What a year.
2. Billlie - Eunoia
I remember when this song first came out I posted about the chorus reminding me in some way of another song; that song ended up being American Boy by Estelle and it wasn't even that close tbh, I'm just weird. Not sure where I was going with that, but this song is very much my jam. It's got a funky beat, a catchy-as-hell chorus, a rap break, a dance break, and great singing with harmonies all over the place while still being synthy and modern sounding. I dunno, it's the total package. I'm hoping for another great comeback in 2024 with all the members returning.
P.S. Check out BYOB too!
3. Queenz Eye - This is Love
What a chorus this song has! I'm not a music student or whatever so I don't really know what's going on here, but the chords really come together incredibly well. This group should be so much bigger based on this release alone; I'm actally a bit pissed off at how little attention they received during it's promotion. The underrated banger of the year, no question.
4. Huh Yunjin - Love You Twice
I was gonna put Le Sserafim's Unforgiven on here, and it's a great song, but then I remembered that Yunjin put out songs this year and I went back and decided that I liked this one more. It's probably the most intimate song on here, and I normally don't go in for songs like this but I really love her songwriting. Great message too.
5. Red Velvet - Chill Kill
What can I say about this song? The video is classic Red Velvet; in the tradition of 'Peek-A-Boo' and 'Russian Roulette', they are killers. Maybe? I dunno, they definitely burn a house down, so that's bad, but how mad can you stay at them when the music is this good? This song is about 'an event that disrupts your day-to-day routine'; It 'kills' the 'chill' vibe of your life. I guess arson and possibly murder would qualify, but I suggest less drastic methods. Try some LSD or mushrooms. Although if their MV for 'Birthday' is any indication, someone at SM already did that.
Great song, though.
6. New Jeans - OMG
I almost put ASAP here but in the end it was a bit too minimally produced and felt a bit...empty. Still a great song, but OMG was just a bit better (for me). I actually almost forgot this came out in 2023 but after checking my notes I saw it was (just barely) in the running and knew it had to be my New Jeans pick. It's a bit slower than some of their other songs but still has groove, and the video is really cinematic; it draws you in and makes you want to watch it over and over.
7. XG - Winter Without You
I feel like I'm becoming a broken record, but this spot was for Left Right up until a few weeks ago. Winter Without You is just too good, though (the bridge is killing me right now!). Great throwback hip-hop sound and awesome vocals. Left Right was really close, but in the end it was just a little bit too repetitive, comparatively.
8. aespa - Spicy
Last year I asked SM to give aespa better songs and they must have been listening because we got this song AND Better Things, so thanks! I love this song's grimy bassline and Winter's vocals over the top of it are preem (been playing a lot of Cyberpunk 2077 lately). Also blonde Karina is swoon-worthy.
9. H1-KEY - Rose Blossom
I thought this would be higher tbh, but this year has been so chock-a-block with great releases it kept getting bumped down. This song is just really strong with great vocals and lyrics that make you want to listen to it when it's been a hard day.
"I'll keep my head up, stand my ground until the very end
Until they get drunk off of my scent and smile"
Words to live by.
10. tripleS EVOLlution - Invincible
This group came out swinging so hard in 2023, they put out like six MVs among their various sub-units and this one was the one I liked the best. Whoever is choosing/producing these songs definitely has a specific sound they are shooting for which IMO can be good, as long as the songs don't become to similar to each other as to feel like a retread. But yeah, so far so good, check out all their songs if you like this one.
-EDIT-
11. BabyMonster - Batter Up
Ladies and Gentlemen, I regret to inform you I f@#%ed up. This song owns, and I really just straight up forgot to include it so we're fixing it live and putting in at the end. It's a top eleven now, okay? Don't sass me, I can't let this go, this is such a banger debut and frankly, it should probably be way higher but I must live with the shame of not remembering to include it by leaving it at number eleven. This group has so much potential; go back and watch some of the performances on their YouTube channel in the lead-up to the group's debut, it's bonkers. Rami is such an amazing vocalist I can't believe she's like 16 or something bananas like that. I remember when I was 16, I was lame as hell. Still pretty lame, tbh, but forget about that and go watch this video some more.
----------------------------
Honorable Mentions
Craxy - Nugudom
I really liked this song, it was powerful and had strong vocals and really honest lyrics from a group who is still small and trying to build a fanbase. Unfortunately the company released one of the members, Chaey, shortly after this song came out and the fans they did have were not happy about it. Hopefully we'll see more from them but the way these things play out there's a good chance we won't. Cross your fingers.
Kwon Eunbi - Like Heaven (feat. Paul Blanco)
Really nice little tune from Eunbi, and kind of a departure compared to her other work, which was even more refreshing than the song already is. Relaxing vibes with little hint of citypop.
QWER - Discord
This group popped up in my feed recently, and they sound kinda awesome!? I don't think we've even posted about them in the thread before but I'm hoping for good stuff from them. They are a real band with instruments and such like Rolling Quartz but with a more J-pop sound, the singer was even in a J-pop group for a while.
ALICE - Show Down
I liked this song, it's not amazing or anything but I really want ALICE (mostly Sohee) to succeed for some weird reason. Sohee lookin' fine in this video (as usual), but they pull the dumb move of having Yukyung in the video as the dorky girl who then 'transforms' into a red carpet beauty by taking off her glasses and buying a nice outfit. T-ARA tried this literally ten years ago with Hyomin and they weren't fooling anyone then, you sure as shit ain't doing it now. Okay, done venting. It's a nice song, you should listen to it.
Pixy - Karma
I wanted to like this a bit more; it's good but I was hoping for something more like Villain and this wasn't quite as good. Also I think they lost a member and gained a different member since then so maybe they're still figuring stuff out.
Kiss of Life - Shhh
I feel like this group is flying under the radar a bit; they debuted this year, put out a bunch of pre-release songs (one solo song from each of the four members), and then ANOTHER mini-album with two MVs, but I still think they should be doing better. Maybe it's just me; Belle was just on the Lee Mujin Service Youtube show recently so there's a strong possibility I'm full of beans and they're doing fine for a first-year group. Anyway, this song is my favorite of theirs from the year, and in case you didn't know, the song title is actually a swear! Don't tell your Mom.
Fifty-Fifty - Cupid
This song would probably be in my top ten if it weren't for all the legal horseshit surrounding the company and their mistreatment of the members. I'm all for striking while the iron is hot but Kpop artists are people, they are fallible and when they have health issues they should always take precedence over making money. I assume you have heard the song already so that being said, I have made the saddening decision to NOT encourage you to go listen to it again. I guess make your own decision but until the Attrakt company makes amends or receives legal action I don't feel comfortable supporting this group anymore, but I wanted to recognize what an amazing year Fifty Fifty had with this song.
Jihyo - Killin' Me Good
Is it me, or is Jihyo gaining more and more power as she goes? Like, you expect an artist who's been doing it for eight years (not to mention the TEN FLIPPING YEARS she spent training) to maybe have lost a step or two, but no, she's only gotten better. I need to find out what supplements she's taking, for real.
IVE - Baddie
IVE came back with a pretty different sound this year, and I think maybe it wasn't as popular as some of their earlier songs but this was my favorite from them. Also, cats!
Yeeun - Strange Way to Love
I liked this pre-release track from Yeeun more than her solo debut song, Cherry Coke. Also I guess there was some issue with Cherry Coke from the Coca-Cola company (couldn't have seen that one coming) and it got taken down for a while, there was a whole thing. Anyway, this song is better. I'm glad she got into EL7Z UP (dumb name and all) because maybe she'll get another shot at releasing some more solo songs after those promotions conclude.
Queendom Puzzle - Last Piece
This song goes hard. It's got a bit of a spooky vibe in the chord structure that I dig. Remember Sunmi's single Stranger from this year and how cartoonish the chorus was? This song is how it should have sounded. Check out Bad Blood from this show as well, it's also great.
BBGirls - One More Time
Another really catchy chorus for this group. I hope we get more from them in the future, it's such a fun comeback story.
STAYC - Teddy Bear
I like this one, it's a cute bop but not super-cute, you know? Not cloyingly cute. Also good vibes; the video is about a friend who shows up and helps you out with their magic powers when you're having a bad day. No arguments here.
Dreamcatcher - Reason
Feels like a return to their debut era but I guess that's the point. Very good and goes hard in the way you want.
Mijoo - Movie Star
This is Mijoo's (formerly Lovelyz) solo debut and it's good for a first effort. She has a lot of star power and this song has a very down-the-middle classic Kpop sound, especially the chorus; I'm hoping she'll find someone to write her a real banger on her next outing.
Great list, Tscott! I definitely considered a lot of those songs, but sometimes I get caught in the trap of comparing the new songs to the music that caught my attention and made me a fan of that group from the beginning, which is a bad habit. I really liked Loona's songs when they were still with Blockberry, for example, and listening to the new music from the various members...it's good in it's own way but for me it just doesn't hit the same. I felt similarly about TRI.BE and NMixx this year; good songs, but I know they can do better (although TRI.BE's Christmas song 'Papa Noel' was in contention for a while if for no other reason than they look like they're having a lot of fun in the video).
Anyway, like I said, it's a great list and I hope we see some other lists here soon!
-EDIT-
I just realized I forgot to include Babymonster on my list! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDGE!!!!
Okay, going back and adding them at number 11. Top Ten is overplayed anyway, right?
