SallyNasty's Game Club — Dead Island (Jan. 2019)

This month, we're playing Dead Island! The Definitive Edition is available on console for free as part of Xbox Game Pass and Playstation Now, and I'm sure it's easy to get for PC.

We'll start playing January 1st! Check in here if you'd like to play along, and feel free to comment whether you're playing with the club or not.

Woohoo! Let's see if I can finally get into this one and beat it off the pile.

I hadn’t thought of this game in so long. Maybe I’ll be tempted to boot it up.

I'll try to participate.

Gave this less than an hour two years ago on the PC and while I thought what I played was interesting enough, I had some performance issues with my nearly brand new gaming rig (so far, Dead Island has been the only title to give this PC problems).

Will fire it up again to see if things have resolved themselves.

I only played it one Xbox but to be sure, it’s a janky game so I doubt it was your pc that was the problem.

I got this a looooooooooong time ago but never fired it up. Installing it on Steam now!

I have this game, its the one where you can throw dead kids out windows right? Ok I'll install it.

Ok they keep asking me who do I voodoo and then they call the B word. I'm not really into voodoo and don't understand why they keep asking me this.

Ok I am using one punch mod and have no idea what that means. Does that turn me into one punch man? Or one punch woman since I'm playing a lady?

No manual saves? Come on. What the hell. The check points better be plentiful.

Hmmm the game seems to have a online mod. I think it defaults to public but I don't know what online means in this game. I set it to friends only. I didn't see a way to join someone's game.

I will give this a shot, I have the definative edition on Steam.

I wake up to a automated message saying there is a emergency situation and I should leave. I leave my hotel room which is pretty nice. There is a open hotel room with two dead bodies. I decide to look through their stuff instead of calling the cops or for help. I find blueprints for a gun. Who were these people? Why do they have blueprints for a gun?

Maybe I should call for help. The phones don't work, it is like they are just static props. I can't even pick them up. Oh well I leave there rooms and search for useful items as try to find my way out of this. Oh lucky me I found blueprints for a cellphone. Why are there blueprints for cellphones lying around? Well I guess I could make a pixel 2 XL and sell it on ebay.

I came to a part where I could quickly one a door via a mini game. It took me a bit of time to open the door so it wasn't quick. I'm not really sure how it works.

I changed the use button from F to E to be inline with most other games. I changed F to kick.

Done with act one.

Ok so once act one is done multiplayer opens up. You can set your preference before then but you can't enter the multiplayer lobby before act 1.

Bashing zombies feels good. Note I burnt my stuff cheese chicken wrapped in bacon playing this. Does that mean it is so fun it made me forget my food? Nope. I'm just a bad cook. So far I'm not impressed by anything. Well that isn't true. I do like that there are a mixed of people and zombies. The last zombie game I played, the evil within 2 everyone was white and there was only a few zombie models. I think there was only one model for the basic female zombie. Note I'm less than a hour in. Haven't shot a gun or done a boss fight.

Another thing I didn't like was I couldn't chat with people or punch them in the face. The world is detailed but since I can't interact with it it seems more like stage.

Oh something I do like is the path on the mini map. Though so far there has only been one path so no way to get lost. I'm hoping the world might open up a bit so that mini map can have a use.

I think the last time I played this was two years ago. Hence, I immediately got an achievement for loading it up again last night.

Picked up where I left off back then, at the end of the prologue. Died three times, because it wasn't clear to me where the disembodied voice was telling me to run to (yeah, it was behind me).

After that, things flowed much smoother. Met some folks, got a bit of rest. I like my new buddies, even if Sinamoi insists on referring to me (Xian) as "he/him", in spite of a well tanned lady in businesswoman casual standing before him. Not even my knee-length skirt - which you'd think would be highly impractical for running quickly, but Xian proves otherwise - seems to get the message across.

Perhaps he's a luminary who can look beyond the veil and see the 40 yo white guy pulling Xian's puppet strings! The tattoo on his eye could be the source of his power. I'll have to watch him...

Game seems to be opening up. I like that it seems like I'll be getting various missions and that there is an rpg-like upgrade system. Also, no performance issues in last nights 20 minutes of play.

Got everybody to the new location. I do find it odd I have a house full of people but I'm the only one going out doing stuff.

Repaired all my weapons and maxed upgraded two of them. Everything dies in one hit with my pipe. For a time I wasn't really using the pipe. I used a big can that I tossed at enemies, stomped them, and picked up can repeat.

One odd thing with combat is that zombies can grab you from a distance that seems to far. Multiple times it looked like my attack should have canceled their grab attempt. I'll have to do some testing but I think the kick can stop the grab before it happens.

Also had a problem with zombies running up on me and not knowing where they are coming from. I'm going to use headphones next time but I just noticed the zombies show up on the mini map so I'll keep my eye on that also.

I'm in a similar spot and yeah, seems everyone's depending on the MC as though they are some kind of messianic figure - last I checked there were no super-powers involved - and will do nothing for themselves save maybe trying to heal or attend to other NPC's.

I've leveled up a little, but don't recall about upgrading any weapons. Currently using a hammer and that seems to be doing the job.

Got to the new location last night as well with the same feelings about being the sole savior (though obviously that wouldn't be the case in MP). Upgraded a cleaver. I used my Fury attack once, and....that was impressive!

I like how it has suddenly opened up, especially after I retrieved some vehicle parts. On the other hand, weapon durability (or rather lack thereof) is getting a bit old. Is it just my imagination, or do zombies level up with you? Bit surprised that a few "resting" walkers I killed respawned. I can understand wandering zombies repopulating areas, but that kinda broke immersion a bit.

Ran into a bit of stuttering again but nothing really noteworthy, especially how pretty the game is. On the other hand, I think I ran into a bug. I had taken down an infected and stood over him about to bash his skull in. I swung....and the screen went black, with Xian yelling "it's killing me!". Then I respawned.........I think. I didn't notice whether or not I lost any money, so did I really get killed by a bug, or was it me losing my sanity like some of the NPCs I've run across?

I'm enjoying this so far and am looking forward to playing more whenever I can. Definitely interested to see where the story takes me next. I also wonder if we'll discover what caused all this, though it seems like the events on the island are part of a larger phenomenon.

Just noticed something about quests. You get guided to the objective if the person tells you where to find it. I was trying figure out why I didn't get guided to every objective.

Heh. I love searching my Steam library and finding things I have no memory of acquiring. I'll give this a shot when I get my laptop back from the shop.

I have been so busy I never got past the opening movie, planning to set some time aside this weekend.

This is one of those games I always meant to play but then I ended up playing Dying Light instead. I may download it and give it another whirl.

Just got back to this game. Was debating on just going straight for story stuff or to play like I normally do and do everything. Decided to just run with it for the most part which probably means I'll be side quest forever and never finish the game. Interestingly some of the side missions feel like main game missions.

Anyway just started using bladed weapons and really like them. I've been cutting off limbs and heads like Wolverine. Also picked up a special ability that gives you a special attack when aiming bladed weapons but it hasn't worked yet or I'm doing it wrong. The tip said I just needed to aim and then hit LMB but that just throws the weapon like normal.

I completed all the side missions except for the repeating ones of coarse. Didn't take that long, less than 2 hours. So now I'm back on the main mission.

I, myself, am chipping away at the game. Finally figured out that some of the main story quests require some side-quests to be completed before I can complete them, so that clears things up for me as I was having trouble getting some of the main tasks completed.

Ran into a bug on bring two juice crates back quest. I was only able to place one of the crates. The other crate wouldn't place on the indicator. I hope restarting fixes it.

Exiting out of the game and coming back fixed the problem. The game removed the one crate I placed down and started me at one of the gas stations.

Now I'm back at the hotel trying to get to the parking lot to grab a big truck to use to clear a passage way.

Got the big truck upgraded to tank. Quit the game to look for any mods or ways to change the view when driving but couldn't find one. When you upgrade the tank blinds are placed over the windows. So your limited view is limited even more. I'll just have to grit my teeth and deal with it.

I'm in the city section where you get to the church safe house. The enemies get stronger here or maybe they are leveling up as I level. Zombies can now throw weapons and kill me in one hit from full health. There are exploding zombies that are all bloaty. There are toxic zombies that can make you sick but you can set them on fire with any fire weapon. There is a big hulk zombie in a strait jacket which probably means the outbreak was on purpose. And we have dudes with guns. This is first time I have seen a gun. Oh and the dudes with guns will attack zombies and you.

I lost one of my favorite weapons because the zombie I killed fell through a building taking the weapon with it. The good news is weapons with status effects can trigger when thrown. Note some enemies are weaker to different weapons. Humans can take a lot of hits from blades but are weak to firearms. Zombies can take a lot of bullets but are weak to blades.

Been doing more jump kicks. Jump kicks seem to be more powerful than normal kicks. When a normal kick is enough jump and kick them in the face.

They definitely level up with you, which kinda bothered me. You must be way far into the game. I barely even remember seeing a bit of city on the map when I last played in mid January.
It's not that I haven't wanted to play more, but there has just been a dire lack of time (and when there was time, I drifted to Saints Row 3 instead).

Glad to hear there are enemy humans as well - that should spice things up after many hours of zombie variants.

About 25 hours into the game. The game is longer than I thought it would be. The escort missions aren't very good but they are easy enough. The escorts will run into danger, leave you behind, and might not help in a fight. Alex they are not.

The story isn't anything to write about but there is one really bad part. You get this scene with Jin driving off and your group talking to her on radio phones. It is clear that part of the story was just skipped over. They are talking like there was a previous conversation that would make the scene make sense but that didn't happen.

On a different note I found a red skull a bit back and didn't know what to do with. Just now I found a pile of skulls that I was able to use the red skull on to summon a special mod. The mod takes a bunch of diamonds which I have been selling off unfortunately. I'm not sure I'll be able to make it now. I also found a magic wand mod but I'll be able to make that soon I think.

To continue with mods, I also picked up two gun mods. I got a shock gun mod and strike gun mod. Oh and I also got a rifle now. I think I missed a shotgun because a cut scene removed me from the room with the shotgun guy in it. Kind of odd you don't get more guns until 25 hours into the game.

I hit a very boring part of the game where I was forced to backtrack a long sewer part. I think they just wanted to pad time onto the game.

Probably wont play this again. I have 63 hours into subnautica with no signs of stopping soon. And I have my free copy of ASC Odyssey that I have been wanting to get back to ever since project stream stopped.

My last game was hit by another long boring part where I had to turn on speakers. I have no idea how many sets there are but I stopped at the third mission. Each time the guy sends you out the speakers get a little harder to activate. I do think the missions were optional though.

I might try to kill the game off in one more go by sticking to the main missions as much as possible. On the other hand the story isn't really there and the combat isn't really anything to right home about and is getting boring. I don't know, I'll explore the oceans a bit and think about it.
