Hades - by Supergiant Games (Bastion, Transistor, Pyre)

Fired this up for the first time last night. Made it to Elysium on my third run before eventually dying to

Spoiler:

the minotaur.

That was with the bow and the modifier that turn it into rapid fire but removes the power shot.

I have not yet reached the final boss of the third area, but I have now unlocked Aspects for my 6 weapons. I'm sure they are all useful in their own way, and I can play without them, but does anyone have some favorites they suggest for newer players? There is months and months of conversation out there, but I'm sure the aspects got shifted and rebalanced many times up until release.

This really depends on how you want/like/thinking of playing.

What you enjoy is always best.

I think the shield is the easiest for newer players to do well. Built in block helps. I know several people that this was the first weapon they cleared the game on.

Personally I find the sword with Aspect of Poseidon the most fun. Can be very strong but it is very boon dependent.

I think the "hidden" aspect of the sword is probably the strongest but I do not enjoy it.

My personal best is probably Rail but it is not my favorite. I've only used it probably 10 rounds but easily cleared heat 16 when i was having issues clearing with casting sword. However, everyone is different.

A couple of my favorites are Aspect of Talos for the fists and Aspect of Hera for the bow.

Aspect of Talos makes your special Magnetic Pull, which yanks enemies to you for the uppercut. It has pretty absurd range when you upgrade it and mostly removes the range limitation that your fists normally have. Find a daedelus hammer special upgrade or two and combine it with the Poseidon knock away on special boon. It's fun and destructive.

Aspect of Hera changes your cast to ammunition for your attack. Load the cast and attack as normal. Your spell hits when your attack does. Combine this with Dionysus Festive Fog cast for hilarious AOE damage and perma stun. Here's a run I just finished, where I also took hammer upgrades for slow charge AOE damage and extra damage at point blank range:

Also my favorite bow aspect. Find it works really well with Festive Fog or with Aphrodite's cast (also a nice bit of damage, and weakens them).

Echoing that finding the weapon that gels with you is really probably the best route. I could not get into the spear early on, and rather than forcing it, found my way back to it eventually after discovering my love of the Rail and Fists.

I have to read how to unlock those aspects. I've got a few blood sitting around now.

I just saved you the trouble by looking it up meself.

Spoiler:

Unlock all the weapons first, so start mainlining keys

No I got the weapons first and I've used some blood on my shield already. The 4th hidden aspect for each weapon is what I need to figure out how to get.

Spoiler:

Other than the first aspect, all of them are dependent on how many upgrades you've given each weapon (I think 5 unlocks the dialogue tree you get from them.) After that you have to talk to the right god.

Oh dear me, I better start spending some. I had no idea. There's just layer upon layer, here.

I think you're right individually... but from what I'm seeing, the hidden aspects of the other 5 weapons are all dependent on the hidden aspect of the spear first, Guan Yu. Got to focus on that on first, and then the others get unlocked.

Spoiler:

But apparently to get the spear one, you need to spend at least 5 blood on any of the 6 weapon other aspects before Achilles will tell you about the spear one. And you need to give him at least one nectar to start a relationship. And likewise it looks like the other aspects require the same from other NPCs related to each weapon.

Well, seeing all the hype here, and elsewhere, I've jumped in! Made my initial run, and then my second, yesterday. I got all the way to Meg on my second, and felt pretty good about myself, but she took care of me after a lot of back-and-forth.

All that was with the bow, but I get the feeling that won't ultimately be the weapon for me. Rather than unlocking the shield, I spent 5 keys to open some more spots on the mirror, and upgraded my cast a little bit. I'll bet I find that useful.

I’m about 20 runs in and can consistently get to A&T. I just unlocked the last weapon, and

Spoiler:

Holy sh*t it’s a gun

Now it’s time to beat the game and figure out how to romance

Spoiler:

Dusa.

Yeah, I put my fists through Hades!!
Now for the bow.

So after far too much play lately I have changed my mind on a few things and not on others.

Under Heat 10, any gods, any weapons, any aspects are all more than fine and you should never quit a run. I have turned many runs I expected to lose into wins.

Zues - Not the greatest on most weapons but is super strong on Rail/Fists.

Artemis - Has some great and very powerful buffs. However, the buffs for "normal/special/Cast" are pretty "meh". They are not very good if you don't have crit chance in other locations. Even then if you do just makes them "fine".

Hermes- Is fun, can be useful. Is still very hit or miss. Attack speed on a few weapons is direct dps but more often than not just quality of life upgrades. I find far to often to blank on Hermes.

Poseidon- The 20% boss damage based on abilities with knockback should be more common. Has some great buffs but if you don't get that one can hurt big time. I've had some great runs killed on Hades because of lack of damage even saving all of my re-rolls.

I was always good with rail but did not overly enjoy it. However, the hidden aspect of rail is a lot of fun also.

Heat 32 - (I have not tried any other heat above 20 I want my useless reward) - I have had Hades down to under 20% health 3 times now. Frustrating.

I wonder if I should be pushing myself more?
I'm still on heat one because I can't get my last weapon, the bow, through Hades.
Should I just start amping up the heat with other weapons?

You do you.

Do note you can play at higher heat say 6 - and the weapon heat/rewards will go up 1 at time. So if you are at heat 1 now, you play on 6, next run you play on 6 again you will still get new rewards until you hit 6.

I personally play the weapons I like the most and the others only when I feel like it. Personally i found my sweet spot between 6-10 early on and got 3 weapons I like that high. Then branched out.

I really enjoy Extreme Measures - 3 and nearly always use it now.

I just finished my fourth run. Felt like a big success because I managed to get all the way past Megaera (first time beating her), to the hydra, and get the hydra down to about 1/3 health. I was wielding the bow, with its special imposing hangover, and also my cast was turned into festive fog. I had an Aphrodite power in my dash, too.

Yeah I'm really liking Aphrodite more and more.

I realized I hadn't had a spear run in at least 10-15 runs (28 total) and since I need to unlock the hidden aspect of it anyway to get the others, thought I'd try it again. Made it to A&T with single digit health on my last revive, so one hit and run was done. Got A down to 50% before he finally clipped me.

I do think I'm going to focus on one weapon at a time for a few runs to get the feel again. All the jumping around chasing 20% dark isn't conducive to winning runs I think.

Still having a blast and working towards goals. Patroclus is the only NPC I haven't given one gift to yet, but I've also only seen him one time. Been keeping one gift in reserve for 10 runs or so since waiting for him, hah. I've got Skelly up to 4-5 hearts and going to try that first as far as companion pets or whatever they're called. So much more to do and still having fun with the individual runs.

Don’t forget to check the trader every trip back to the halls. I picked up some nectar for 10 gemstones as the limited offer a few runs ago which felt like a pretty good deal

Yeah the regular trades are pretty meh but that bonus one is always good and worth looking at each run.

I don't really care about Aphrodite's weak effects that much, but she consistently has much higher damage increases that come with them. Like 70% compared to 30% or so with other gods.

I had another wonderful run tonight with the Rail. I picked up Aphrodite and Dionysus boons to get that sweet double debuff bonus, and I also had some good defensive boons and a ton of hearts. I only started losing revives on the third region, and I beat A&T the first time I faced them. By then I was down to a single revive from the tooth, and the 4th area finished me off.

I even managed to meet death and give him a gift after the run.

I look forward to A&T killing me in the next 10 runs. Ten more keys and I have the bottom part of the mirror unlocked.

Some days you just want to play heimerdinger.

Ooh, that would have been a fun run! I really don’t mind Demeter’s stuff - her cast, call and boons are almost all just straight up damage and those beams can be super useful if you’ve got good area control.

I've only had crystal beam once but it was so fun. Haven't done a run for a couple days due to real life but maybe tomorrow.

The Crystal beam can always be good with good positioning. However, what I learned in that run is with Crystal Clarity can be pretty nuts. The turrets acquire targets very fast with it so you don't even need to worry about pointing them.

Anyone playing on God mode? I’m getting frustrated and would like to see the story though, but I don’t want to ruin the game for myself.

I though about trying it. I'm getting frustrated too. I've had 70+ runs and never god Hades first health bar down. I'm starting to question if anyone has actually beat him.

It’s possible! I can confidently take Hades down 90% of the time if I reach him now - I generally know before I hand the sack over to Cerberus whether or not I’ve got it in the bag. For me it’s just been enough exposure to learn the patterns and the tells. I still get sloppy and need to accommodate for deteriorating reflex, so my main goal is to reach Hades with at least 3 revives in hand (I always sub in Skelly’s tooth when I leave Elysium). I can clear Tartarus and Asphodel without expending significant health or coin but Elysium and those bloody satyr rooms still give me grief. I can say that things get more interesting when you do finally take Hades down, so it’s worth persevering

All of this!

Can't stop thinking about this game even when not playing. Read a few more articles on it last night. Kotaku had a good one about the level design, and a silly one about what weapon you like matches your personality.
