Hades - by Supergiant Games (Bastion, Transistor, Pyre)

T consistently gives me the most trouble during my runs. I don't know what it is, but I feel like I have more trouble with him than even with Hades.

Because his blocking and tracking are bs.

T got almost trivial once I figured out the pattern:

Spoiler:

When Theseus throws the spear and recalls it, he always turns his back on you and walks away. That's your opening where he definitely won't block. It's not much, but you can reliably get a bit of damage in then. This is easier said than done while Asterius is swinging that axe around, so I usually keep my distance from T and kill A first.

T also doesn't block when he's doing the initial god call, so if you've got an immunity you can pop that's a good time to get a nice chunk of damage in.

Yeah regular T is not so bad anymore. I noticed the same opening, and can usually kite him around columns when I'm playing without a timer. But the Extreme Measures version was a pain with a lot more mobility and AOE fire instead of just one spear. It sucked.

I haven't had too much trouble with the Extreme Measures version, but I've also never had to face that with short-range weapons. I just haven't quite built my heat up high enough with them to where it makes sense to enable it...

Is this a game best played with a controller? Or will m&k do?

Yes and yes. It's an action game that's best suited to a controller, but lots of people are able to make mouse and keyboard work.

It's $20 at Epic, and if you have one of the $10 off coupons that's a steal.

Not sure there's any reason for me to double dip, if PC has mods or anything?

mouse and keyboard is better if mouse and keyboard is better for you, same with controllers. I cannot play the game at all with a controller but I've gotten 4 kills so far with M&K.

Saw credits, then immediately escaped again.

I got super lucky for my 10th win with the hidden bow aspect:

Spoiler:

I showed up to the Hades fight with no uses left in Death Defiance, 2/3 health, and a weird ass build of short range explosion attack damage on a bow that is built for hitting multiple enemies instead of a single enemy. I was all set to get my ass handed to me and he just... lets me by. A wonderful time for that to happen.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I had randomly increased my heat to 8 to go for the first Skelly reward on this run after playing heat 3 previously.

Yeah, that’s the final mainline story encounter. I was pleasantly surprised by that development. Congrats!

Still stuck on Achilles quest. Think I finally had a scene to progress it so maybe next run. But I'm closing in on maxing everyone's relationship. Just a few more gods to go too.

73 runs now I think.

Not quite the end of the story, but the next bit is quite a ways away :)

Don't make me highlight mainline.

Spoiler:

Hey, the epilogue is still part of the logue! :)

This game has annoyed me to no end, haven't played it for like a month until today. Got a lucky stream of boons and got through finally. Was my 14th run. First time I got to the last boss, so pretty happy about that, but was so close to dying. The Cursed slash lifesteal is the only thing that has really managed to get me anywhere so far, also in previous runs. Seems so much better than everything else.
Got mixed with some buff that gave a 100% movement speed after a dash, and another that converted movement speed to more dmg => wohoo!

Congrats!

Congrats!

You must have picked up a lot of Centaur hearts to have 100 health with Cursed Slash! Especially if, as it looks, you haven't yet unlocked the mirror perk that gives you a permanent health boost.

Thanks. Yeah, primarily went for that whenever it was an option. Not much use in lifesteal if enemies oneshot.
Unlocked the permanent health boost now

I'm just not very good at this game, but I really enjoy it. 35 runs and counting without a win (I've gotten to the final bosses in Elysium 3 times), so I've finally turned on God Mode. The butterfly balls are my undoing more often that I care to admit. Even without winning, most runs are a lot of fun.

Is there another way to get Titan Blood apart from beating the first boss with a different weapon? I think I've exhausted all I can get via that method.

Sometimes you can trade for it in the lounge, at the broker.

Otherwise you get some for each weapon beating the final boss too. And once you beat it the first time a new avenue will open. Keep plugging, you'll get there.

One thing that made me come back to the game, after kinda giving up, was that i read about upgrading weapons with titan blood. I was like, surely that will compensate for my lack of skill!
But still haven’t figured out how. Is it just a matter of doing more runs?

Pretty much.

At this point, all the darkness you can get will go into the mirror to increase your skills. You probably don't have enough keys to have unlocked the full mirror and some of the later ones are incredibly beneficial. Also, the gems will allow you to improve the rewards you receive during your runs (by unlocking them at the contractor). There's a chance you haven't given Nector to all the NPC's yet and the first Nectar you give to anyone unlocks a trinket which will definitely improve your runs and you might not have found the ones that fit your playstyle.

Darkness, Gems, Keys, and Nectar are all currencies you get by just doing more runs. Maybe do a few runs where you focus on those instead of Boons.

Something that helped me: The mirror defaults to Cthonic Vitality, which gives a pretty negligable amount of health per room. The alternate is a benefit that heals you by a % of the darkness you pick up. Now that you've beaten each boss once, they are dropping increasingly large amounts of darkness and that health boost might buoy you a bit more.

Edit: Oh yeah, and if you haven't unlocked the Minor Prophecies at the contractor yet, do that right away! It gives you a number of goals other than just 'beat the game' that make each run more interesting while you are building up strength.

Charon will often sell a Titan Blood in the final act. It's 1200 gold, which isn't nothing, but is quite doable if you aim for it. And if he isn't selling it, there will be other useful things to spend that gold on. Back before 1.0 they cost 1500 and I found that WAY harder to pull off.

And if it helps... I was in NO WAY hitting Hades consistently until I had twice that many runs. But I enjoyed the grind and progress toward unlocking things enough that I didn't mind. If that gameplay loop isn't doing it for you there's no need to throw yourself at it. Don't let Hades be your Bouldy.

The big things that changed the game for me were the mirror upgrades that doubled my health and gave me three death defiances.

Thanks for the answer. I think I understand all the other upgrade systems, just not the weapon upgrades thing.

Trying out the health per darkness pickup sounds interesting. My impression was that it is negligible and the hp per room was better. Getting health back has certainly been a major issue, hence only having any success with the life steal boon. Avoiding dmg entirely does not seem like an option, for me at least

I have wasted nectar a bit I think. I started out focusing on a few NPCs, but it sound like you don’t get anything worthwhile from that?

Eventually you do, but if you're looking for a more direct benefit early on it's 1 per NPC.

The hp per room is better for the folks who are constantly pushing a bit of the NG+ that doesn't reward Darkness quite as often. At the point you're at (and for most of the time I've been playing) the darkness hp on pickup is super nice. Between that and the fountain between you start each section pretty much full.

Yeah that should be in the starting tips guides or something. Give 1 nectar to every single NPC before you give a 2nd to any.

So many interesting keepsakes out there.

And you also want to be carrying nectar with you during runs. There is a special NPC in each area that you find behind an exclamation mark door. They are always worth visiting for their bonuses during a run. And since they don't show up every run you want to gift them that 1st nectar when you can.

The health on darkness is a fantastic upgrade even on new encounters. That and the healing wells after a boss practically guarantee full health to start the next area.

Also, if you see Dionysus "wells heal fully and add x% damage bonus" early, grab it. If you make it to Hades, at a minimum you're always at full health and a 12% damage increase. If it's of higher rarity and/or run across other wells you can get quite a bit higher than that.
