My sloop was sunk by a ship of the damned. Then a gigantic whale crawled up onto land and smashed my house.
Then it shuffled off into the forest:

The only way this game won't drive me crazy is if I watch this video over and over again. Only change the word "Life" with "Atlas".
Upcoming Version: v8.0- Further improved server stability.
- Further reduced Ship of the Damned spawns by 20%
- Ship of the Damned now are allowed to "Wander" away from shore if they find themselves close to shore
- Ship of the Damned targeting ranges now are reduced by the type of ship (down to 30% for rafts (which means they will now attack rafts - but you have to get pretty darn close to them!) and 0% for dinghies)
- -LowMemoryMode now disables the background movies for lighter memory footprint
- Changed damage type on repair hammer to 0 against players, human npcs, and creatures to stop pvp on pve servers, not used as a weapon on pvp.
- Ships near shore do not attract cyclones anymore
- Vultures should now more easily harvest corpses
- Ships that players are based on do not use staggered updates now (resolving the issue of the choppy spyglass rotation when in the crow's nest, for example)
- Can no longer weapon-charge or dodge when encumbered.
- Fixed erroneous reference to chalcedony instead of flint base
- Added Ingots/Alloys and Organic Paste to the list of resources allowed in the ship repair box
- Tripled gathering weighting of metal in all the generic rocks for both pick and hatchet damage types
- Grenades damaged to stone multiplied by 3x
- Changed Human Crew character carry inv max weight from 1000 to 60.
- Switched damage weightings around so the pick tool is preferred from metal/crystal/gem/salts and hatchet for wood/coal/stone, etc. No adjustments have been made to yield changes, just tools have been adjusted.
- Fixed an issue with treasure bottle's spawning (there will now be more of them and more reliably spawned) and increased the quality of loot found in treasures.
Hopefully you will have to be right on top of a ghost ship to get attacked while on a raft. I have to wonder if they will do a server wipe once they get all the issues with claim flags ironed out. It is amazing how quickly all land got gobbled up and claimed.

Unfortunately for some the land grab is a IRL business opportunity, to then be released to buyers for real cash, and as such its done with a lot of manpower and efficiency.

While i agree there's areas where there's massive companies and alliances that will lock down a zone on a pvp server. On pve servers it's just a matter of finding a 30 minute window when people are not on.
So is this worth buying yet? Will there be a wipe before leaving Early Access?

There has to be a wipe and i suspect a few of them while they're still working on their systems.
As for getting in now...
Depends on your pain threshold.
They've improved their server stability to the point there's only 1 or 2 crashes or hang ups a day now. I say that as if it's been that way for awhile. Yesterday there were a couple crashes and that's it compared to the hourly barrage. They're also doing server side patching almost every other hour now with one or two major client side changes.
There's still game mechanic and balance issues that need to be worked out but it's definitely playable now and fun. PvP is a bit on the brutal side because of player destruction, but on the PvE side it's not so bad because player destruction isn't a thing. Land claim issues on PvE isn't that big of a deal. You're now able to build and pilot ships without them getting instantly destroyed by roaming ghost ships.
It's Ark with pirates.
So the PvP side of things is like ArcheAge.
You live or die by the zerg. We saw the massive guilds on the Atlas heat map making their way south and knew we'd have to make a stand at some point, but a group got there a day earlier than we'd like.
Keep in mind we were in extremely hostile land. Walking outside without armor on and you would die from exposure. If it started to rain you would literally start freezing to death immediately. Still we were at the point of actually worrying about actual food and vitamins and not just gather/die over and over again. We had just stabilized and was gathering massive amounts of high end mats and had our base pretty much to the way we liked it. Had plenty of mats to instantly build a Schooner and another Sloop not to mention few sets of high end armor and weapons.
We were in a tentative alliance with the inhabitants on the island. The alliance roster was full and was waiting for a splinter one to be created and be picked up on that one. Then early yesterday we saw a bunch of drama going on in the chat. We were ignoring it and went about our business. As we came back with a new load of fiber (which btw doesn't exist in the tundra, and after this trip had stockpiled around 80k of it). We were told that this group, that we had previously had seen claims scattered around, was going around trying to pick up all of other claims on the island. We had JUST unloaded our stuff and i walk outside to see a guy banging away at one of our storage containers inside our base. We apparently left a crack that was hidden by a bush. Just as we kill him 2 more guys came in and tried talking to us. Basically told us we could join their clan and be allowed to stay here. He gave us discord info and we were waiting for a response back.
If they didn't come in attacking first i think we may have just rolled with it. Maybe. The fact that as they were leaving after that we got the notice that we lost the claim to our shipyard sealed the deal for me. So Escher and I started consolidating and moving stuff around to get ready. Pretty much made up our mind that we'd go down swinging first.
So started a long ass night of siege and cat and mouse. By the time we were ready and made a call out that anyone still interested in fighting back come to us and we'd shelter and gear them up was just too late. We had no takers.
We had a cannon on our sloop so tried that first and ALMOST sunk a Brig. Lag on our server was getting worse as the night went on, especially on water. So missed a few chances at shots as we fought the wind along with the lag. Then lost our sloop. Decided it was then time to start going black ops on them and with metal tools went out to the bay where they had their boats docked started breaking down the planks on their ships.
Took down one schooner and a sloop and ALMOST had the brig down again, but lag and rubber banding got so bad for a bit that i couldn't get back to the tools and armor before they noticed and started repairs. I was contemplating giving up for the night and heard this.
Ignore the death cries... Had just respecc'd my character to carry more weight and reduced my fortitude. So being out in the cold and then the rain on top was killing me before i even made it to the beach.
And yea that was a buzzard flapping over me the whole time waiting for me to be almost dead.
So being jacked up on caffeine and New Year good cheer increased my efforts. Ended the night with 2 schooner sunk and 3 sloops. Got our claims back and a few extra. Multiple storage containers and player kills and went to bed knowing that I would probably wake up with our base gone.
New day. I wake up hearing people on our roof. I had a message from Escher that he had been on earlier and added to our tally and their death toll.
It took them around 3 hours to get through our gates and another 1 or 2 to finally make it into our base and even then it wasn't easy for them. We dumped all our good stuff to decay so they couldn't make use of it and then went on demolishing duty again.
They took our main base finally after a day, but it cost them 3 schooners, 6 sloops, multiple tamed and breeding pets, and structures taken down. This was with just two of us. If we had the other two who were out on holiday or was able to get other island fighters in time... We could've probably made it to the point they didn't want to stick around.
I gave up the fight after sinking another schooner. I thought i had lost our last cannon and 5 cannon balls due to lag and on a dead body. Needless to say near the end this early morning i was a bit delirious with the lack of sleep. It was in a storage container in one of our ancillary bases near our reacquired shipyard. So i took the cannon planted it on the shipyard and sunk the schooner.
So live or die by the zerg...
As for PvE, we have a few bases established. We have been going on Treasure Hunts and it is enjoyable. We are working towards a bigger ship to go fight the Ghost Ships, but for now it is just harvesting, taming, and exploring. The only fighting you do is against AI and you can choose to do it or not.
As with Ark in early access, there were several wipes and I expect them.
The schooner is basically done and will be making trips south to the tropics soon to get sugar and exotic spices and to gather different mats to make the upgraded recipes. We will begin working on a Galleon probably this week.
Also, I'm wondering if we can fit an elephant on a schooner....

Not sure of the level of their ship, but i saw an elephant with saddle on a sloop.
I've respec'd into taming this last level and will also be looking at taming some more aggressive creatures. I'd like to try and get a horse (need sugar cane) and a lion.
Found a decent video on taming here.

This post log is absolutely fascinating. I don't think I really want to jump in this game as buggy and touchy as everything is right now, but I'm loving this play-by-play.
awesome mount pic
Could somebody PM me the coordinates for the GWJ PvE base please?
If I am at Gracona Reef, Valhalla's Rest am I in the right area? Is the company name "Valhalla's Rest"?

Yes, that is the right area but we are a little further north. We are GWJ Company. On the map you will see what kind of looks like a lake in the middle part and we are at the north part of that lake against a cliff.
Okay thanks. Hopefully I will be able to make my way there tonight
OK folks today i was able to get a private server stood up.
149.56.29.28:42016
from Steam click on view/servers and you can then add the IP:port to your favorite listing. You can connect to it from there.
It's a 9 server cluster with a 10 player population for each zone. I only know of around 6-8 people currently playing so shouldn't be much of an issue at the start. So GWJ and friends only and i'm not publishing the IP outside of this forum.
If you're not familiar with Atlas yet the map you see for each zone has to have it's own server. So that means we have a 3x3 square to work with. We have Temperate, Desert, Tropical zones.
Today they put out a patch that all harvesting and taming gains are at 2x. So we're starting with that for now, but not expecting to raise that much higher (2.75x maybe) except on special occasions or events.
The following are the things i'm looking at changing (have already changed*):
Claims allowed on Freeport (limit these 1 per player)*
Level past level 8 on Freeport*
Skill point increased rate after level 40 (the default is currently 5, and going to look at 8 to 10)
Taming rate increase to 4x
How long a corpse sticks around
Things that Can't be changed.
Food decay rates
State decay rates (vitamins, hunger, water)
Tool/Weapon decay rates
There's more i can't think of currently, but there's honestly not much that currently can be changed. I'm sure they will add more later.
Things i Won't change.
Player stats
Animal stats
NPC stats
Remove the need for claims(doing this sets the whole server to lawless with the faster decay rates)
Also making changes isn't a quick easy process right now. I have to visit each server and do a restart so when putting in changes i'm probably going to gather all i can at one time and then post a time when implementing them. This will limit the amount of human error when plugging this stuff in.
Tame time was also changed to 2x today which is the new standard. So Only thing i would recommend is Taming time maybe 1.5x (which is 3x old taming time).
Skill points - I would say after lvl 30 maybe extra 2 points per level and extra 5 after lvl 40 or something like that.
I vote for 2x taming and 1.5x harvesting.
I had quite the adventure last night. I finished the sails for my sloop. I went with 1 med handling sail, as I heard that makes for a more idiot proof sailing experience. Later I will describe how this is not necessarily true
While loading up the sloop with stuff, I realized that a few of the treasure maps that I had collected were in the starting grid, with one on the north feeeport island I made my starting base on and I could tell exactly where it was. I headed out with my fresh new metal tools and shovel. As I was approaching the area, a cold front moved in so I made a fire to try to weather it out. While doing that I decide to go check out the area of the treasure because it was so close I could go check it out and get back to the fire before my health dropped too much. What I did not know was that the treasure is guarded! As I got close, some skeleton archers started rising up (level 44, I was level 11) and started peppering me. I started running but was cut down fairly quickly. I spawned back at my hut, but the cold front was still on and I did not have many resources, not even enough to start a fire. Went to try to get enough resources to start fire and make new clothes but still died. The next respawn I had enough to make clothes and start a fire and managed to just survive the cold. At this point I was sure my previous body would be gone along with all my new metal tools but I went to check out anyway. Luckily all my stuff was still there and the archers were gone.
After that I thought I would just take out the sloop to test it out before logging for the night. Released it from the shipyard, named it, raised the sail and headed out straight. And kept going straight. Nothing I did would turn the ship, tried the wheel, rotated the sails, nothing. just straight. Ran into a sandbar and that is where it is stuck now. After trying and failing to move it at all I finally logged off in frustration. I am curious, is there supposed to be an animation for the wheel turning when trying to steer and/or should the rudder icon on the ship graphic (where the wind and sail direction are shown) turn or rotate like the sail icon does? Because neither did for me. When I "used" the wheel I would attach to it but trying to turn left or right did not move the wheel in the world view (i.e. it doesn't "spin") or the rudder in the icon view, so I am wondering if I didn't install it correctly?
Assuming I manage to save the ship and continue the journey, can somebody let me know where the GWJ base is on ranalin's server? I was told a couple of days ago on Discord, but I was a little inebriated and did not remember or write it down
We have different spots. The bulk of folks are on A2, Escher is on C1, and i'm on B3.
Currently we have a 3x3 grid. A-C/1-3
As for the steering... After the last patch i couldn't control a pet i just tamed until i restarted the game. Same issue may apply to your boat since they're also new this patch.
FYI Ranalin meant bulk of folks are B2 not A2.
Is anyone still playing on the Official PvE server? I've been jumping in occasionally to check stuff and run around a bit and feed animals but forgot to jump in and change our claim flags with the new patch.
So with the start of the private server, we're slowly but surely making our way in the world.
Some shots of getting one of our bases ready. We're working on getting more animals tamed and building more and bigger ships.
Are the kinks worn out to a reasonable degree?
I have seen a lot of the building videos where ships are basically pre-determined size empty hulls that you can customize the guts of. Is there any way to make custom hulls?
What about other craft? They mentioned being able to make almost anything you want on/with custom servers. Is there steam punk stuff yet? (airships, tanks, mechs)
We're playing on a private server so don't have to deal with some of the game balances due to population. Most of the bugs that allowed you to not play at all were fixed like 3 days in after launch. I whole heartily don't blame people for jumping ship after that kind of launch.
They seem to be working hard/fast on fixes. Every day they're pushing out patches.
As for the custom stuff. They were supposed to release the dev kit to make that type of stuff this week. I have no plan for the private server to make use of them. Want to play a pirate game. Not some steampunk crossbreed.
Lol, a pirate game with dragons, gliders and elementals.

Yep, but no steampunk, tanks or planes.
