No preamble this week. There are too many games. So many that I’m presenting 10+1 instead of my usual 5+1.

Above the Fold is a newspaper-running simulator, which is kind of adorable. Manage a team of beat-reporters, and then pick what news you think should be important to grow your local rag into a national fishwrapper!

Gun Crazy looks like the Contra remake that I wanted Cuphead to be. I don’t think I can sell it any harder than that.

Light up the Holidays is a chill experience where you decorate your house with lights for Christmas. Customize everything from the size and color of your light bulbs to the trees in your yard and the wreaths on your door. I don’t know if there’s a minigame where you try to figure out which bulb is burnt out, but since that’s a reference for people who grew up with serial strings of lights instead of parallel ones, I’m betting there isn’t.

I’m not sure what to make of Whimsical Quest, but it looks frantic and goofy in a delightful way. And I love that Commodore 64 art style.

Oakwood is a game that realizes what needs to be done to revitalize the survival horror genre: Get rid of the freakin’ zombies, already! You play as a latecomer for a weekend of camping, only to find the campsite massacred … by dinosaurs! If it does nothing for the genre but change what we’re running from, then it has done a great service to the world.

Override: Mech City Brawl is a game for people who want to have battles in which buildings are collateral damage. Sure, it looks like it plays like War of the Monsters for the PS2, but is that such a bad thing?

Battle Princess Madelyn crosses Shovel Knight with Ghouls and Ghosts. It looks fantastic, and is probably going to be one of the hardest games to come out in 2018. It’s also one that will probably get robbed when it comes to Game of the Year discussions, just because it came out so late.

MewnBase knows what was missing from the survival/scavenger/base-building genre: Cats! You play as a space cat trying to survive on a Mars-equivalent. It’s a game based on The Martian if The Martian were a saturday morning cartoon from the 1980s instead of a Matt Damon vehicle.

Do you miss the days of comical 3D action platformers in the mold of Banjo Kazooie and Spyro, but don’t want to play the games that just came out that were made by the makers of Banjo Kazooie and Spyro? Then Scamp: High Hat Havoc is the game for you. It’s got an amazing, cartoony art style and will feature lots of sight gags and probably more than its fair share of dad-jokes.

How did Just Cause 4 make the release list without me knowing about it? Seriously, there are too many games coming out right now. I just spent my birthday money on the new Hitman game, I don’t have time or money for a new Just Cause right now! Especially not with my game of the week coming out at the same time!

I do, however, have budget and time for my game of the week. Katamari Damacy Rerolled comes to the PC(!) and Switch. I’ve been silently begging for a Katamari Damacy game to come to the Switch ever since the Switch released, and now it’s finally here! Sure, it’s a remaster of the first game, but that just means it has the best soundtrack of the series.

I’m eagerly looking forward to rolling my balls until they get so big they can pick up buildings! Katamari Damacy: Rerolled is my pick of the week!

Geez, with a release list this long, it’s almost as if there’s some widespread, culturally-based incentives to increase spending on non-essential items in effect.

It’s a banner week for us console Gwent players, as both the multiplayer game and the Thronebreaker single-player game are coming to the couch.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Story Arc 1 – Legacy of the First Blade is the first DLC for Odyssey, for those who still have the appetite for it.

If my kids were writing this, hands-down winner would be Hello Neighbor: Hide & Seek.

Just Cause 4 dishes up another giant scoop of trademark open-world destruction. They’re not out to change the recipe too much this time around, but just to add more, more, more. Apparently the new engine allows for weather events, which can combine with the destructible environments to add more chaos, like tornadoes taking out bridges mid-mission. It’s set in South America, and is going for a greater variety in environments than Just Cause 3.

But now for something newer, weirder and yet potentially more delicious: Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. How do I begin to describe it in a way that does justice to its enticing cocktail of ingredients? Saying it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world means nothing at this point. Do I mention that 2 of the 3 starting characters are a boar and a duck? If I say the combat is turn-based like XCOM, you may begin to get why I’m excited. There’s also a home base to return to and do XCOM-y things with your troops. The kicker, though, is another mode in between base and combat: exploration. This is essentially a stealth mode where you roam an area with your troops, picking up resources and scouting things out before going loud on some tangos. It opens up scope to choose your approach to a scenario, or unwittingly walk into an ambush – a feature I really dug about Divinity: Original Sin 2. The devs, The Bearded Ladies, have a number of ex-Hitman peeps working there, which is good DNA to have when putting stealth into a game.

For being an intriguing mix of gameplay elements I love with an added dash of kook, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is my GOTW. There’s a “GWJ Plays” vid of it here.

Nary a Smash mention? Weird.

Mutant Year Zero is coming out? I thought that was in a few months! Oops.

Only you guys would pick everything but Smash Bros. Ultimate this week.

I can’t vouch for Felix, but I only pick good games.

Nah, it's just my long-admitted Nintendo-shaped blind spot.

We got our first Wii last year, is what I'm saying.

I can’t vouch for Felix, but I only pick endearingly janky games. ;)

FTFY.

This is a good week. I have Smash pre-loaded so I'll be playing that soon enough. I'm also excited about the prospect of playing Katamari on Switch at some stage.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom looks good. A Wonderboy game in all but title.

Nary a Smash mention? Weird.

Really trying not to buy anything to buy as little as possible* before 2019, but Subnautica releasing on PS4 along with Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden are making it tricky.

*Let's be realistic.
