Xbox Game Pass for Console, PC, and Android

I fired up Hellblade 2 over weekend and, holy crap, the level of graphic fidelity and animation is insane. Leaps and bounds beyond anything I have played before. The story is really drawing me in too!

Digital Foundry on it:

This is one of the best presentations I've seen in a long time. After the terrible year XBox has had, they knew they had to bring the big guns.

Highlights for me:
Doom: The Dark Ages - the shield looks sick
Fable - in-game footage looks really nice so far
Perfect Dark- after so many rumors of this being in development hell, this looked very promising. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it's looking like they took ideas from immersive sims and Mirror's Edge.

Hard to say what if anything I will personally play but I agree it was a strong showcase at a time that they really needed it to be.

A lot of the games coming to Gamepass day 1 which is nice!

CODBLOPS6 actually looked really interesting. I haven't been interested in playing a COD game since I got totally alienated by the tedious rail shooter aspects of the original Modern Warfare 3 back in 2011. That game just totally turned me off the whole series.

It was a great showcase. Ninety percent of what they showed are things I am genuinely excited about playing. South of Midnight and Mixtape seemed like really cool concepts.

They gave Doomguy a Captain America shield. With a chainsaw blade around the edge.

sick.

Overall, though, I dunno. I was not all that impressed. Sequel, soulslike, sequel, zombies, soulslike, expansion, sequel, zombie shooter, remake, expansion, post-apocalyptic zombies, soulslike... bleh. Even the new DOOM just looked like more DOOM.

Mixtape is maybe something new, but with no real gameplay in the reveal, hard to know. Avowed? Maybe something new there, too.

I'm guessing Mixtape is close to a Telltale/Fire Watch type game but I'm the target audience age so I'll most likely be checking it out..

@Badken Not really sure what you were looking for? There was quite a few new IP stuff and a bunch "sequels" were bringing back old IPs that are just new games in the universes. I'm pumped for Age of Mythologies Retold. Hell, it's been a long time since there was a Gears game.

I didn't see any new ideas or gameplay. Contrasted against some of the indies in the Summer Games Fest, it all looked tired to me.

Taking Age of Mythology as an example, contrast it with a game at SGF called Battle Aces. On the surface it looked like a bog standard sci-fi RTS. But the way they described it sounded intriguing. Uncapped Games is trying to build an RTS where "actions per minute" is not the primary factor to compete. Units are drawn from a fixed set that you build before a game, and it almost sounded like the units themselves are customizable. Unfortunately (for me) it looks like Battle Aces is multiplayer only. It's also free to play, so who knows what monetization it'll have. And balance is very tricky for a game like that, because it's easy for a single strategy to become the meta, and then the game is boring.

Age of Mythology, on the other hand, had a glow-up, but no new gameplay ideas, and the unit animations looked terrible. The giant units didn't have any weight or inertia, so they didn't feel big. The game is only a few months away, so things like that probably won't change.

I was in a bad mood from the start, though, when the Call of Duty setting was shown. The last thing I want to see is a shooter that romanticizes Desert Storm, which is ancient history for most of the kids that'll be playing it. It does look like it'll at least have a decent campaign, but I worry a lot about that story.

I'm pretty sure AoM has a full 50+ mission campaign.

Sorry, I was talking about the other game, Battle Aces in that paragraph. Not real clear.

And I edit quoted again...

Edit: I think you meant to type another game for your first full paragraph?

I really liked GRIS so I'm interested in that dev's new game Neva:

Not sure what the heck this game even is yet but I like the look and sound and I enjoyed The Artful Escape (previous from this dev) so I'm ready to give it a chance:

This looked really cute and I'll give it a try:

Some others that looked interesting enough taht I'll be paying attention to how they turn out:
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn
South of Midnight (from the devs who made We Happy Few and Contrast)
Atomfall (from Rebellion)
Eternal Strands (never heard of Yellow Brick Games before)

My son is going to want to play:
Squirrel with a Gun
Age of Mythology

Neva does indeed look wonderful. I enjoyed Gris so much, I'll buy anything from that studio sight unseen.

Winter Burrow looks cool (ahem, sorry), but I wonder how it will set itself apart from the dozens of other cozy games that seem to be sprouting all over the place this year. I'll definitely give it a look, though, since the relaxing pace and beautiful art style is perfect for me.

I wasn't really expecting much going into that presentation, but I found myself quite impressed. First off, it was a super dense showcase - back to back games with almost no fluff filler in between. And while not everything shown was up my alley, all the other ones looked pretty spiffy and almost assuredly up someone's alley.

And as someone who gave up his XGP sub a while ago... they might get me back later this year.

Expedition 33 was a bit of a surprise for me.

Overall a very solid showcase.

I’d really like to play Stalker 2. Fingers crossed it heads to PS5.

This is probably the first showcase that has made me jealous of Xbox owners just in terms of seeing multiple big game reveals in a row.

OP: Should replace “Android” with “Web/Mobile” in this thread’s name. Hasn’t been locked to Android in a long time. I guess it’s supported on non-Android TVs now too so maybe “Everywhere” is getting close to accurate? At least while we keep including xCloud streaming in this thread.

Given that the OP hasn't posted in years as far as i'm aware, i wouldn't hold your breath

My son and I have been enjoying some coop Roboquest and Clone Drone in the Danger Zone lately. Not sure I would even know these games existed or given them a try if they weren't on Game Pass. Helps that they run well enough on my laptop integrated graphics so I can play on that in the same room as his Xbox.

Anyone know what happened to Clockworkhouse?

They are fine. They just don't post here much anymore.

Glad to hear they are doing well.

Need to add a new category to the title of this thread!

Xbox is now available on Fire TV 4K sticks

Game Pass price changes coming, and other things.

Game Pass Ultimate -> $19.99 per month
PC Game PC -> $11.99 per month

New billing begins in September.

Just in time before my multi year conversion trick finally runs out at the end of September. I’m debating renewing. I found plenty of value at the ~$5/mo I had been paying.

It says they’re limiting stacking of the old console-only sub to 13 months, but I haven’t seen any newly announced limitations to stacking core and converting to ultimate. If so, then it should end up being ~$10/mo for 2 years of ultimate (3 years of core at $75 each, concert at 3:2 ratio to 2 years of ultimate). That’s probably still worth it to me. But I just don’t play a lot of newest hottest releases, so the big selling point of day 1 releases doesn’t do much for me.

Keeping Cloud as Ultimate only is a bit disappointing for me. I’ve been getting some value out of Ultimate despite many of the games I play not being the big releases and not caring about day 1. And, by using cloud, I’ve been able to get in some gaming time on the go even when I don’t have time to play at home. But for $20 a month….

Gotta extract maximum value from the tens of people who be playing on the Amazon Fire Stick.

Well they've got me for now, I just banked another 21 months for ~$10/month to take me close to the 3 year limit. So at least I don't need to worry about the new $20 price for the time being. It did hurt to do it at the current yen/dollar exchange rate though :(.
