Playstation 4 Catch-All

Seems like a big difference, though.
(Note: Haven't played it. I'm not picking sides.)

I’m curious if most have a PS4 Pro versus the Slim, or even the 500mb versions? (Or whatever other PS4 version the is out there ). And as I read it, the PS 4 Pro was a big leap forward in performance.

I'm still gaming on OG ps4 with 2TB hard drive swap, I have 1080p tv and it still works wonderful for me.

I have a Pro, but only because that was what the KH3 branded edition came in.
I really haven't noticed a difference between the Pro and the OG so far, but I've also not played a whole lot of games on it yet.

From what I've read, the PS Pro really only shines if you have PSVR and/or have HDR enabled and a compatible TV. Not really enough there to justify the increased premium for me.

Thanks folks for the input. I’m basically buy this for, ‘MLB: The Show’ to play the mod, ‘Road to the Show’. So if it works well enough for that I’m satisfied.

The other issues I don't care about.

That's a shame, as it's actually, for me as a trans person, by far the more upsetting issue. It's a fundamental negation of that character's identity, an implication that her identity is not only a choice but the wrong choice.

Even if the description I've read of Vincent's treatment of Rin is inaccurate, the game is deeply offensive for that issue alone. Here's another take on it from someone who is considerably more of an authority on Catherine than I am.

I'm taken aback quite a bit by your aggressive and hostile response, accusing me of "purposefully misleading" and "spreading lies" with a "disgusting" and "gross" mischaracterization, while also weirdly refusing to identify me ("the poster"). I'm sorry if Catherine is something important to you that you feel is being attacked, if that's the issue.

Sometimes this stuff feels personal. Speaking for myself, Catherine was, at one point, a game I would readily identify as my favorite game, and I've been a big booster of it and defender of it over the years. I've also been a huge fan of the Persona series. That the team has taken the opportunity of re-releasing the game—which (I should emphasize) already has some very transphobic material in the base game—to make it more offensive to queer people is personally upsetting for me. Even more so because it's targeted at people like me.

I didn't accuse you of purposely misleading and spreading lies. I was accusing the human crap you quoted of that. The reason it made me upset should be clear to you since you were just as hostile in your post based partially on a damn lie. I said I didn't care about the other issues because I didn't disagree with them and I wanted to make it clear I was only talking about the false beat down. Like you said the game has plenty of stuff to turn people away. There is no need to f*cking lie about it. There are real people being murdered just for being trans. This is pissing me off all over again. I don't give a flying F if she got all the other stuff right. she purposely lied and in and in doing so crapped all over every trans person that has been victimized.

She. The person whose account I read, as I linked to and mentioned in my post, is herself a trans woman.

Sorry, corrected.

Both the base PS4 and the Pro support HDR, so that's not a distinguisher. It's 4K that the base can't do and the Pro can.

Base PS4 can only do HDR when connected to tv directly. Pro can do HDR through a receiver to the tv.

That's certainly the first I've heard of that, and a quick Google search didn't turn up anything. Do you have direct experience with it? There's certainly no shortage of stories of receivers not passing through HDR, but that's usually a receiver issue, not a source or display issue.

Yes that was my experience with my marantz nr-1607 receiver. I had an original ps4 and then went to the pro.

Huh. I have an original PS4 model and didn't realize they had enabled HDR in a patch update several years ago. When HDR was first released to the PS4, it was on Pro only. That said, my system runs through a receiver so I guess I'll find out if that's an issue or not...

Isn't it possible that part of the receiver issue is actually that the OG PS4 doesn't come with the right cable?

Kind of annoying is how they offered up vanilla Destiny 2 free for Gold members back in September but now that SKU is unavailable in the PSN store so you can't even download it from your Library.

Is that recent?

I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago without any problems.

It must be because they have their Critics Choice sale going on now and are hawking the Destiny 2 Legendary (aka Everything) Edition for $40 and just the Forsaken DLC for $26. No base game in sight and an unsightly error message when I try to download from Library.

Not an instant deal-breaker since I never bought base D2, simply added it to my Libary when it went free for Gold. I just find it a bit sneaky and... what happens to those did buy and simply want to reinstall? I assume it would have to be available for them.

By a week, it looks like; the Pro was released on 7 September 2016, and System Software 4.00, which added HDR support to base PS4s - among other changes - came out 13 September.

That wouldn't surprise me - the Playstation site itself specifies that you need a "Premium HDMI cable" to get the HDR data. Of course, it also specifies that "The PS4 must be connected directly from the PS4 to the TV to output HDR. It can’t be connected to a receiver or switch box", and that's not necessarily true. Just like the cable it goes over, HDR can be finicky.

Point being: literally the only reason to get a PS4 Pro is how beautiful Shadow of the Colossus looks at a higher resolution.

So does the passthrough box for PSVR mean that the TV signal is no longer HDR?

On the initial hardware revision of the PSVR, yes. On the later hardware revision (CUH-ZVR2) they changed it so HDR passthrough would work.

The breakout box for the original PSVR, the one with a jack for earbuds, blocks HDR signals from the PS4 to the TV. The current version, which has built-in earbuds and earbud-holders in the headset, does not block HDR.

AC Odyssey looks way better on Pro (and One X). Both the min and max resolutions available to the game's auto scaler are much higher on the newer models. In even relatively low complexity screens, the OG models look blurry at 1080p.

That's a good point. I mostly play third party games on Xbox these days, so I overlooked that.

The only three games so far where I've felt like I got something out of having a Pro are Shadow of the Colossus, Ratchet & Clank, and Spider-Man.

I was about to say, I thought Spider-Man looked noticeably better.

Thanks beanman and Evan E. Once again I'm glad I didn't buy something day 1.

PS Plus games announced: Call of Duty Modern Warfare remastered and The Witness.

I'm not sure how I feel about either game.

The Witness is one of the best puzzle games ever made.

I'm a little surprised that Sony decided to drop PS3 and Vita games from PS Plus and replace them with nothing at all. I think a lot of people assumed there would be a third PS4 game or a PS VR game or something.

I sure did. I was hoping this was the start of some VR support.

I’ll give the witness a good go. I didn’t buy it because I was concerned I wouldn’t get on with the game (I bounced off Braid) but I can easily see myself being a convert.

I think Sony are aiming to give a couple of ‘higher quality’ games rather than more games but that’s debatable.
