Starlink PewPew-All

Starlink is out tomorrow. It's gotten almost no hype around this forum, but a lot of people are looking forward to it over on Reddit, especially in the Nintendo Switch forum.

It's an optionally toy collection game, however it's completely optional and fully playable buying the game digitally without any toys.

I'm a space, starship, pew pew fan in general, and always liked Star Fox, so really looking forward to this one.

Reviews are coming in

First impression is, the physical setup of this thing is far from ideal - on PS4. I guess I didn't do my homework, but I thought the ship would sit on some kinda separate pedestal like Skylanders, but this is a dongle that attaches to your controller and the ship is actually on your controller - which is kind of cool in a really dorky way, but also awkward, my thumbs are sometimes hitting this thing, and worst of all it's NOT WIRELESS it actually has a cord to connect to your PS4, so you're back to the Old Days when playing this game. And yes, first night, the cord actually spilled a drink because I wasn't being careful and well, used to having a corded controller!

Gameplay so far is pretty much what I expected, and it's fun, of course I've barely scratched the surface, but I like all the customizing and leveling up that seems to be on offer here. A vehicular shooter is a genre that has kinda disappeared so this is cool. The graphics are colorful and sharp. I was picturing having more freedom of movements but so far I'm basically a hovercraft and not a fighter plane when on planet - maybe this changes at some point, or this is just how it is on planets and you only have full movement freedom in space, dunno.

Whoa you picked up the game early? Nice

I was able to pick up the game yesterday. I was strongly considering just going digital, but the price dropped on launch day on Amazon Canada for the physical version, and I got a price match. The allure of the Arwing was too much for me.

I only got to play a little over an hour yesterday, but so far what I've seen is pretty enjoyable. Story does look rather standard, but they're very well done cutscenes with a lot of characters. And it's very cool to see the entire Starfox gang actually incorporated into the game, you can tell they could be completely excluded in other releases, but they are still worked in pretty well imo

Graphics are pretty incredible for the Switch, I'm very impressed. I've been to two worlds and they're both very pretty. It does have a very No Man's Sky simplified feel with the scanning of alien fauna and such. Combat is interesting, combination weapons isn't difficult but is a bit better than just mashing shoot.

The Arwing toy is pretty awesome. Not gonna lie. My kids were very excited to play, but I bought this like 90% for myself

Enjoying the game so I broke down and ordered another ship, the Judge's, I think I'd like to have him as my main pilot - so I have three now which should be plenty. Well it better be because I don't need to spend any more money on this game!

Ugh, I was clicking around the store too fast and accidentally bought a $60 content pack instead of the actual game.

Yikes. How is that possible without owning the original game??

It’s for people that buy the physical starter kit the want to add on digitally. I was trying to figure out what packs had what and made my mistake.

I contacted Nintendo customer support and they’ll break their no refunds rule for me.

How sweet of them

Nice to see Starlink getting its own thread! I've already had a rant about why I didn't pick it up that I won't get into again here.. I do love the look if it though so I might experience it vicariously for now if y'all don't mind.

I get the impression it’s a lot like returning things to stores without receipts - they’ll do it as long as you arent requesting refunds every month.

Would be nice if they allowed easy returns like Steam but that hasn’t migrated to consoles yet (unless Xbox does it).

I am still having a lot of fun with this game - I hope it does well, though I'm thinking it may be one of those underappreciated gems, really there's nothing else that plays like this out there this holiday season, it deserves some attention.

This is so strange! Has anyone been affected by this?

Nope, I read about it on Reddit. Seems to only be affecting people who got it shipped from Best Buy iirc. Definitely strange though

So what are people's thoughts on the game?

I just spotted that I can get the Physical Starter Pack for Switch at 40-50% off, leaving it significantly cheaper than a standard full-price game. Is it worth getting? I had ruled it out but that's a good price.
