Spooktober 2018!

Okay fiends, it's that time of the year again, where people decorate, watch movies, play games, and do all sorts of things to get in the mood for Halloween! What are YOU doing this year?

My ex and I usually meet up and hand out candy at her place while chatting and hanging out with her family. We used to do it before we started dating, and it was an amicable break up, so being able to do stuff we did in high school is nice. It's also an excuse to get out of the house. 2 for one.

My wife and I like to take a 'quantity over quality' approach to Halloween movies, and usually end up watching a gem or two while we're at it. It's a good way to avoid wasting all our viewing time searching for a good film!

And this year the kids are starting to take an interest in pumpkins too, which is lovely.

Oh, and I'm about to Resident Evil: Revelations 2.

I'm planning to catch up on a number of horror TV shows and possibly movies. I need to finish Stranger Things D2 and American Horror Story s1, for starters.

I've been looking at whether I want to play some horror game this month, but I'm feeling more drawn to multiplayer games with a Halloween event. Rocket League's starts next week. I'm toying with buying Overwatch, or diving back in to Destiny 2 since they say it's improved. For now, I've downloaded Paladins since it's F2P.

I usually read some Creepy/Eerie comics on my iPad during October, too.

A fun creepy game would be a blast. I need to figure out where my 360 gamepad is. Stupid move. We're decorating the house and will probably watch through the HP movies. The Wife and kids do fun Halloween movies not scary.

Story Bundle and Humble are doing Horror book bundles that might be of interest... (the humble one is a mix of graphic novel stuff and ebooks)

Bundle of Holding are also offering a bunch of horror RPG bundles for Weird War 1 & 2, Palladium's Horror Sourcebooks and Leagues of Adventure Gothic Horror & Cthulhu sourcebooks.

McChuck and I are catching Poltergeist at the theater tonight.

Trying to figure out a good family costume idea! I have 3 girls 3 to 10 and then my wife and I. I'd really like to do a Star Wars or Super Hero theme but my wife is not into that kind of stuff .

I enjoy both kinds.

I watched the first two and a half episodes of The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix and I'm really enjoying it so far!

I also did download Overwatch and play their Halloween horde mode thing.

i'm just like any modern man trying to have it all. Loving wife,, a family. It's just... I wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade on Halloween.

The local beer bar has trivia every Tuesday and is doing a Halloween theme all month. The first week's trivia was The Walking Dead Season 1; second week was Stranger Things; this week was 80s horror movies; and next week is It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Other festivities include a costume party at said beer bar this Friday, a costume party at my friend's house on the 27th, and the annual Halloween Continuation Party at a friend's place in rural Kentucky on November 10.

Three (maybe four) of us are dressing as 80s/90s wrestlers. I'm The Ultimate Warrior, a friend is Hulk Hogan (Hulkamania era), another friend is Randy Savage, and the "maybe" friend will be Andre the Giant if we can convice him and find or make a black singlet.

That sounds like Female Doggoin Halloween, Meatman.!

I watched some more of The Haunting of Hill House yesterday and I'm still really digging it! The cast and the visuals are both excellent. Great production values. Again, it's on Netflix.

I really want to watch this but it’s a hard pass for the wife (who isn’t watching TWD with me either), so we’ve been watching Maniac, which we’re both really enjoying. Next time she’s off to bed earlier than me I’m going to check out the first episode of THoHH.

Gaming-wise, 2018 will be the year of getting deep into zombies in Black Ops 4 for me most likely.

I've yelled about it in the Netflix thread, but yeah, Hill House is spectacular. Episode four is possibly one of the best horror things I've seen. I'm torn between wanting to binge it and wanting to savor it. Fortunately, schedule lately has meant I only get a max of one episode per night, and I think I'm liking that cadence.

On the gaming front, I'm enjoying the Overwatch and Rocket League Halloween events.

I usually read old Creepy and Eerie comics but my iPad was stolen this summer. I could read on my Surface Pro, but I just haven't set things up yet.

As usual, I'm ramping up my horror game exposure with some games I skipped for whatever reason in the past: Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water and Little Nightmares. I love horror games, but strangely don't gravitate their way lately until October comes around and reminds me. Sooo many other options....

We went out with a group of friends to a haunted corn maze last night. It was the hot place to go in October when I was young but I haven't been in about a decade. Even though the maze is over a mile long through an uneven, dark corn field and some areas made me really dizzy, it was just as cheesy and fun as I remember. I even got spooked a few times.
As for the rest of the month, I'll probably watch a few scary movies and finish decorating the house. I need to finish a costume as well before Halloween, because our new place has lots of kids nearby, so we'll probably have quite a few trick-or-treaters this year. I already have tons of goody bags packed full of candy, stickers, tattoos, etc ready!

Seeing as games have come up a few times, does anyone have any games they think work well with this time of year?

Thinking about my library...Resident Evils and Layers of Fear seem like obvious choices for me. I'd also say games like Thimbleweed Park and Oxenfree though. Thimbleweed is probably the least obvious, but I think I'd had a great vibe that goes well with this time of year.

Alien Isolation is great for a game where you're constantly in fear or hunted. Feel powerless and have to deal with androids who honestly freaked me out more than the alien with thir dead faces.

For creepy games, the original Silent Hill. Especially when those, err, "babies" appear.

Haven't played either but I've heard good things! Layers of Fear is probably the closest I've played and it had some pretty trippy moments.

I spent one night this year with RDR Undead Nightmare, but I ended up playing other things. I beat it during October many years back.

I also spent an evening trying to get back into Dead Space. I finally tried that game this summer and was absolutely loving it. I played a little bit couldn't get back into it. I'll try again another time.

Halloween trivia is happening around here too.

Tempted to play Until Dawn again on PS4.

Finished "The Haunting of Hill House" with the BF last night. What a terrific show. We loved it from beginning to end.

For some reason a gaming + Halloween synapse fired for me this morning and I recalled being a sophomore in college in 2000. In my one bedroom off-campus apartment, on dial-up internet, I spent the night unlocking secrets in newly implemented areas of my favorite MUD with a small handful of friends I didn’t really know, and listened to Symphony X’s V: The New Mythology Suite until about 3:00am on my CD player.

It was so incredibly lonely but fun all at the same time.

I don't do it anymore, but I used to play Costume Quest (replaced by Costume Quest 2 when it was released) every year at Halloween.

Okay, now I need a Halloween music playlist. Here's what I've got so far:

Thriller
Ghostbusters
Nightmare On My Street
Dead Man's Party

What Halloween songs do y'all enjoy?

Monster Mash
The Addams Family theme
The Misfits - Halloween

Reading off today’s Halloween-inspired playlist on my phone:

Opeth - Sorceress
Spooky - Atlanta Rhythm Section
Season of the Witch - The Lou Rawls version
Welcome to My Nightmare and Feed my Frankenstein - Alice Cooper
Black No. 1 - Type O Negative
This is Halloween - Marylin Manson
I Put a Spell on You - Screamin’ Jay Hawkins
Symphony X - Incantations of the Apprentice and Kiss of Fire
Devin Townsend - Vampira

I have added Somebody's Watching Me and Halloween Theme (from the movie). I haven't had a chance to consider y'all's suggestions yet, but I will!
