I’m in but I will continue from where I left off. Also it is a slow burn even with the 3DS version so be aware of that.

I might sign up for this quest in a few weeks. Got the game a year ago and bounced off pretty hard after about 8 hours. Would like to give it another go though, since it's the only one of DQ I - IX that I haven't finished.

I was hoping to PSP it but running into various issues at the moment.

Charging 3ds tonight, I voted for this so I will give this a solid effort!

I am in as well.

Do I need to be playing another 100 hour JRPG? Of course! I'm in.

So my first main series Dragon Quest game is to be VII not VIII as planned. I'll need to pick up the cart from somewhere, breaking my solid September of zero game purchasing, but never mind, looking forward to it.

Same. I definitely am in for this, but plan to pick up from where I left off. Fair warning to everyone, especially if you have not played a DQ game before: this is a really good game, but also an easy game to burn out on. There will be a lot of backtracking.

I'm probably going to wait a few weeks before I start this, so that I can finish a couple other DS or 3DS games which I've been playing on my commute. When I start back up again, I'll be here:

Spoiler:

In Hubble, with Ser Mervyn in my party.

I might have the PS1 disks for this game lying around somewhere...

That's impressive. How many hours would you say you put into the series, overall?

Far too many? Just gonna guess somewhere around 850-900, especially since everything after IV takes around 80-120 hours (not counting lost progress).

I've also finished DQ 1 at least 3 times with a few other aborted attempts. Luckily, it's the only one I've played through more than once.

I'm in!

I'm waffling on whether to play the Japanese 3DS version that I have lying around or to buy and play the English version. The Japanese version will take me longer, but it'd be good for me to sharpen up my language skills again. But at 100 hours+ for the whole game just in English, I'm a bit hesitant to add any more time. Decisions, decisions.

In any case, outside of about 5 hours with DQ1 on iOS, this will be my first time digging in to a DQ game. I'm really looking forward to it.

You can buy it Monday and not break your solid September!

I will be starting from an existing save. I think I'm less than 10 hours in. The good thing about the game is that it feels pretty episodic (so far anyway).

I am going to finish Yakuza 2 before I just in, so probably not until the middle of the week maybe.

I'll be excited to hear what you think of the DQ series! It's been one of my favorites, and I've finished every one except for this one, XI (naturally), and X, which was an MMO. They can be really, really good, expecially if you like games that have a cute and charming element to them.

Let me offer one piece of unsolicited advice: you can control each party member manually, or set them to follow AI scripts like "Show No Mercy," "Focus on Healing," or "Don't Use Magic." These scripts are actually pretty good! The characters tend to focus their attacks in ways that make sense, and in some cases they may do a better job than I do of identifying enemy weaknesses to particular types of spells or status effects. Also, battles in DQ can be repetitive, and making decisions for every character in every fight makes me feel the grind that much more.

I tend to take over at least some of the characters during boss fights, especially if they have party-buffing abilities that I can't trust them to use consistently without my direction.

I finally got my rip running on PSP, phew! If that's something you want to do, let me know, I can hopefully smooth the process for you.

I'll echo LastSurprise: do avail yourselves of the AI control options. They are actually pretty good, and it'll help combat go faster. Does the 3DS version of this also have the faster battle speed option that DQ8 does?

I just checked, and it does not. It has a battle message speed, and that's it.

I was thinking it would easier to just get the 3DS version but $40 is a little steep. Was hoping to have seen it on sale by now but nope.

Gamestop has it used for $25.

Digital only here.

I'm in using my DS copy. Looking forward to playing and the fact that I have a head start make the chances of me beating this one much higher.

Just to double check but I guess you mean 3DS? I think the DS only has 4-6 and 9.

Yeah Cex has it used over here for £20. It's one of those games that'll hold value to trade back when I'm done (feeling positive!).

You guys enjoy it! I have a 3DS that I need to fix - it was my daughter's; I've already replaced hers - but doubt I'll get around to it and acquiring DQVII for it in the next three months. I did beat it for the Playstation back in the day, so, I'm interested in seeing what you guys think.

I put my first hour in yesterday, besides robbing everyone on the island and smashing all their vases and boxes there has been zero action I'm eager to get into the actual gameplay

Yeah it's a super slow burn at the start. If I'd been playing a demo I think I would have passed on it. Finally wacking stuff now, took about 2 hours to get to it!

It really is. One of the slowest burns of the DQ series, I'd put it up there with Kingdom Hearts 2 on my "when do I get to the fun f***ing part of the game?" scale. But it's great when it gets going.

Except for Maribel. She's my least favorite ever.

I was able to upgrade my gear and gain 3-4 levels while watching Survivor just before. I've never really found DQ combat interesting, will be curious to see how this one bears out. My DQ background is just 5, 8 (neither finished) and a little of 9. Maybe being a club game will be enough incentive to knock this one off.

In the spring I burned out at the volcano (not on purpose), I just realized =/ Everyone was level 10. That's where I'll try to pick back up at.

Its weird that characters level at different rates. I finished the first real dungeon last night, so far this game is perfect for just turning my brain off and playing for a half hour to an hour before bed.
