NFL 2018 Week 2

Pages

So it looks like new coaches had a really, really bad week in week 1, going 0-7 with some embarrassing efforts. Considering that none of them play one another this week, the potential for a repeat performance is definitely still there.

Jon Gruden, Raiders at broncos. If Gruden grudens like he grudened last week, the Broncos are a lock.

Matt Nagy, Bears vs seahawks. The Seahawks managed a yeoman effort against the Broncos while the Bears got Rodgered by an obviously chemically impaired Rodgers. Seahawks.

Matt Patricia, Lions at 49ers. Patricia looked way out of his depth in a game that got way out of his control. While the Niners kept it close with a clear playoff contender. Niners.

Frank Reich, Colts at Redskins. Both Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes played well enough to make you think that KC AND Washington won in that trade. Redskins.

Pat Shurmur, Giants at Cowboys. Shurmur's Giants showed impressive ability to move the ball against one of the NFL's best defenses. Giants.

Mike Vrabel, Titans vs. Texans. Given strength of competition, I am going to have to go with the Texans.

Steve Wilks, Cardinals at Rams. Do I even need to say it? Rams.

As a Chiefs fan, this pic sums up the difference in the two QBs so perfectly. Alex is the details guy, that has the ROI numbers down for every throw he may make. Pat is more like, "Sh*t, I can make that throw." There is a vibe going around Chiefs fandom right now that something different. It's a crazy swagger. But seriously, Mahomes wouldn't be who he is without a year behind Smith. It's been vital.

I'm really glad Smith is doing well in Washington. I hope this trade will always be seen as win-win. I can tel you that without Fuller, the Chiefs would be screwed this season. And I think Smith has several more good to great seasons.

But back to Mahomes! This is a pretty great read on Mahome's week one if you sub to The Athletic. And yeah, the Hype Train is going full bore.

Patrick Mahomes film review: He was even better than you thought

This passage references this play. In the article he uses the behind the QB view which shows it better, but you can still see the read.

Mahomes demonstrated a few more traits that are crucial to success as a quarterback. One of them was fooling defenders with his eyes and body language, something he’s shown a knack for but has been a inconsistent with during the preseason. He threw a bad interception due to staring down his target against the Falcons. He seems to have learned from this, and demonstrated it on multiple plays like this big completion to (who else?) Hill.

On this play, Mahomes has Conley open in the flat for a short gain that could go as far as 6-8 yards. However, Hill has done a good job finding another soft spot in the zone. Mahomes starts off looking at Hill, then adjusts his gaze to Conley as though he’d moved on in his progression. This causes the zone defender to break toward Conley, opening up a lane to Hill. Mahomes fires another dart for a completion, taking the bigger chunk of yards rather than the smaller, safer throw.

It’s worth noting that this is another play where pressure could have easily rattled Mahomes, but doesn’t. A stunting defender is able to get a bead on him even as he calmly takes the time to look off the underneath defender so he has a clear path to Hill. Mahomes doesn’t even bother to glance at the rusher and doesn’t let it affect his throw at all. It’s worth noting that while the offense line was OK against the Chargers, the fact that pressure didn’t seem too impactful on the game was in large part due how little Mahomes allowed it to affect him.

Why are Buck and Aikman on NFL Network? I was probably just going to watch Good Place reruns anyway because it's Ravens/Bengals but now I won't even check in.

On the bright side, NFL Network's crappy audio makes it almost impossible to hear them.

You missed a Classic Elite Quarterback Pick then.

Flacco reverting to type

Ugly game. I’m thinking final will be 38-6

Did...did Buck just do a Collinsworth impression?

Thursday football update: Reruns of The Good Place are still really good.

Seattle realized their team sucks so bad they're signing Mychal Kendrick.

40-42 since the super bowl and that awful contract. Ugh. The INT on the first drive looked like Flacco had the Bengals D on his fantasy team.

A bad one, too.

And the reason you're hearing him on Thursday night is that Fox has the Thursday night contract instead of CBS/NBC.

The games stream live on Prime Video. I got last week's stream via NFL.com, but I don't know if that was a one-off. (I didn't try this week.)

Browns cut Josh Gordon after he showed up late to the team facility today.

Also, he has a hurt hamstring, which has been suggested to be the result of unknown activity after practice. And his appearance on Saturday has raised suspicions of resumed substance abuse.

EDIT: Schefter says the hamstring injury occurred at a promotional shoot.

EDIT 2: The release won't process until Monday, and the Browns are willing to field trade offers until then, if any team wants to jump waiver priority and get him.

Did a link to this week get posted in the Week 1 thread? That's the only way I ever find them...

C'mon Seahawks, sign him!

I'm trying not to get on the Bucs hype train, but jeez.

Gabbert gets the start!

Chiefs makin’ it look easy.

Mahomes might be the real deal. With his 2nd TD pass, he now has 6 TD passes to 5 different receivers.

Was really worried that Pittsburgh’s zone blitz was going to mess with Mahomes, but the Steeler defense just looks confused.

Titans have given up on Gabbert and have lined him up at WR like six plays in a row. Henry is doing a better job at QB than Gabbert.

Great game brewing in Lambeau.

My poor heart.

Edit: dance moves extraordinaire again from Adams.

So the Josh Gordon stories have been updated to say there was no suspicion of substance use, just the photo shoot injury and subsequent late arrival to team facility.

So he might get a chance to still play. Apparently he wants to go to Dallas or San Francisco, but I'm pretty sure he'll take whomever is interested.

The Chiefs may not need a defense. Mahomes throws his third TD pass to Hunt to go up 21-0 in the first quarter.

Mahomes is 6/7 for 106 yards and 3 TDs.

Tyreek has yet to even be targeted, although he was wide open on the TD pass to Kelce.

I'm not sure yet if the Packers D is better but it's different. Considering how mediocre it's been for years I'll take different until we have enough tape to ID what's going on.

Well, whatever the Chiefs defense was doing that was working has already been figured out, as the Steelers just made 21-13 after a missed XP on the last TD. Reid better not take his foot off the accelerator.

On the Steelers first TD drive the Chiefs nearly ended it before it got going, sacking and forcing a fumble that was run in for a Chiefs TD, but a defensive holding call wiped it out. They are getting pressure on the QB, but Steelers are starting to nickel and dime them, and those receivers can make plays.

I look forward to the Browns v. Fitzmagick Super Bowl.

Waiting for confirmation of Mahomes 5th TD pass of the day, putting the Chiefs ahead 35-28.

Probably gonna need two or three more TDs to win this game, though. Maybe 4. Jeez!

Joe Posnanski telling it like it is.

Mahommes isn't just the real deal, he can take both MVP and rookie of the year.
