Of note this week are the Switch Releases of Gone Home and Broforce, two games which could not possibly be more different, but which prove my larger point about the industry being big enough to accomodate all kinds of players, even ones who play games I don’t like. But enough of my soapbox, what’s new this week?

Monster Pub is a game about being a new monster in a town of monsters. Go to the local tavern and make friends in a game that may or may not be inspired by Dejobaan’s Monster Loves You. If you haven’t played Dejobaan’s Monster Loves You, shame on you. Don’t you like text-based personality tests with consequences? I thought so!

Visual novels don’t usually make this list, and for good reason. When I want to read a book, I go do this thing called Reading A Book, which involves a lot less wear and tear on my mouse and allows me to read more than twelve words at a time. 28 Shibuya Scramble, however, is an FMV visual novel, which is a concept so brilliant that I can’t believe nobody did it before. If it’s successful, maybe we can get Tim Curry and Mark Hamill back together to do something for the genre.

The InnerFriend gets a pass on my blanket ban on camelcase titles (I’m looking at you, FullBlast!) because it’s so visually interesting, and because the story looks like it might actually back the visuals up. You play as a child who is somehow forced to face his worst fears and past traumas while literally trying to reassemble your own damaged psyche.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age looks darn good, but doesn’t get my nod for game of the week because the Switch release is in the indefinite future, and there’s no place I want to play a Dragon Quest game more than on a portable system. Once it gets a date, though, I’m preordering that sucker faster than you can say “You’re Part Of The Problem!”

Duck Souls makes the list because, well, come on! It’s a hard-as-nails platformer called "Duck Souls." The TL;DP review practically writes itself!

My nod for game of the week goes to Tree.Bonsai. Hah! Just kidding. That’s just the one you’d think I’d choose. My pick is actually Immortal: Unchained. If my experience with The Surge taught me anything, it’s that the one thing keeping me from getting into the Souls genre was the setting. Poorly lit corridors and rusty swords don’t hold my interest, but colorful (albeit still dim, alas) corridors, rayguns and neon-colored laser-axes will get me to sit up and take notice. Shallow? Sure, but not as shallow as rejecting a vertical-scrolling shooter simply because I didn’t like the font selection.

This week’s easy: It’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. A big part of how fun open world games are is how fun it is to get around. Batmanand Just Cause realised that swinging around above street level is more fun than being stuck in traffic. Now we get to see how fun it can be with the original webslinger – just as long as we don’t have open-world busywork like collecting materials to craft web-fluid. I think the people who made Ratchet & Clank will find the right balance of goofiness and challenge for a Spider-Man game, and I can’t wait. GOTW.

Comments

DQXI all the way. I'll buy it again on Switch, I'm sure.

This is the first time I'm not buying a Yokai Watch game at launch. Busters (coop action) isn't as interesting to me as YW3 would've been.

I'm glad I'm still working my way through the Dragon Quest rereleases (the GBC, DS, and now 3DS) so I can wait on XI for the Switch. I think playing DQ on anything but a Nintendo system would cause nostalgic dissonance and my therapist would have to dress up as Rob the Robot in order for me to learn to love again.
