Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Smash All

I'm really curious how much they have to spread out over 40 minutes, unless it's a flood of new characters and stages. I remember the E3 showing was mostly for Smash, and a lot of it was just going over tons of minor mechanical changes. Interesting, but maybe not what you normally think about for E3. Maybe they do more of that here in advance of the release. And there was that mysterious new mode they introduced sometime back (the blurred out green icon, I think), so I would assume we hear more about that.

Is anywhere doing a trade-in deal? Or does you just buy a second system?

The Smash Switch is pretty cool! :)

Bought a 2nd. Got a friend at work that wanted one for his kids for Christmas anyway so I'm selling him mine next week for a bit of a discount.

Doing system transfer this weekend. Will report back how that goes in the Switch thread.

The total number of stages is known, but not all stages have been revealed. That's driving speculation on the number of remaining characters in addition to assumptions of a single player mode having more boss characters such as those revealed from Castlevania. If they do have numerous characters, then plenty of time will no doubt be dedicated to unique video trailers as every other new character has received, followed by the detailed breakdown of how that character players, the features of that character's stage, and perhaps new items or Assist trophies that come along with it.

The new mystery mode is sure to get a good amount of time as well.

The August 8th Direct was around 27 minutes long, so adding in another 13 minutes for final details doesn't seem too outrageous to me. Especially if they're revealing more characters and echo fighters than were revealed in August.

Sounds like it worked out quite well. I look forward to hearing how it goes. I doubt I'll get the Smash one, cause I love my Mario-red Joy Con, but if they ever did a Zelda one...

I'm trying not to set my expectation too high, but I would love some robust single player content.

I was talking with someone who said that after the whole sub space emissary mode in Brawl leaking on YouTube that the creator will not do another single player story mode like that. Has anyone else heard something similar?

That does sound familiar actually... Hopefully that's just a rumour, or maybe Sakurai changed his mind since then.

You can watch the Smash Direct:

https://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-di...

So that leak was pretty far off.

This whole spirits thing... I dunno. I feel like it's more "substantial" than what you got with Trophies, but it also sounds like unnecessary over-complication. I'm also wondering if this is what that blurred out icon was on the menu, which would disappoint everyone hoping for a new single player mode.

I don't understand spirits at all.

They said in interviews a SP mode isn't coming back. It was too much work or something.

What is World of Light then?

... So what is World of Light? I feel like I've been shown something amazing that didn't make the cut for the game or something...

Piranha plant as a fighter is an amazing addition, even if it isn't part of the core game, it may also have been my favorite thing shown. I also want that amiibo.

I have some mixed feelings on small things. On the whole I thought that looked great and I'll pre-order because I'm a sucker that's Part of the Problem(TM). Piranha Plant looks awesome, but at the same time this is precisely the kind of exclusive trash that no one wanted when all the other publishers were doing it years ago. That Nintendo is stepping into that territory is frustrating.

On the plus side, we see that Nintendo is selective with this sort of exclusivity tease. How many games have they released without DLC that are so content dense you're kind of shocked at how much they squeezed in? Isn't Super Mario Odyssey nothing but free updates? How many free updates does Splatoon 2 get? I think we can at least appreciate that Nintendo is not trying this with all their games, though you could argue they're just testing the waters more slowly than other publishers would.

As for Spirits... I feel like they're a fusion of whatever it was you could use to modify fighters in the WiiU Smash and Trophies, and to me it's just... man, I wanna play the game. I'll have to rewatch that segment when I'm not at work and talking with a friend on Hangouts, but it just seems like a weird feature.

The World of Light technically is a single player adventure mode, but it doesn't look anywhere near as... "complex?" as Subspace Emissary was. Fewer mode-exclusive assets, no traditional stages, etc. So it's single player, but not a "campaign" like Subspace Emissary. You're using the over-world map to do what looks like some puzzle solving between otherwise standard bouts of Smashing.

Can I just say I loved how Owain-possessed Chrom largely did nothing but taunts? They've clearly done some A.I. tweaks for the spirits and how the chosen characters will behave.

I like being able to manually adjust power. I was just talking to buddy Steve about his three sons and their age separation, and how currently even the handicap in Smash 4 isn't that helpful in keeping things fair. It's him as an adult, a very competitive 7 year-old, and a 4.5 year-old that simply doesn't like losing and has some powerful emotional responses that just... playing a competitive game can be rough. The power adjustments don't necessarily help solve all those problems, but it should be a better way to mitigate skill gaps.

I kind of want those customization options for multiplayer to also apply to the "For Fun" and "For Competition" modes, but it's all moot anyway since I'll just create and join arenas for play with friends.

I may need to get a LAN adapter and just openly Discord on my laptop in the living room until I can stop being a man-child and get my own place.

Won't be getting the Fighter Pass until I better know who is in it, but really I just want Sakurai to have himself a vacation, get some rest... and then make Kid Icarus: Uprising 2 (or work on something brand new, whatever he wants, just give him a break from Smash).

Finally, EVERYONE IS DEAD.

I think the World of Light is the “Story Mode” and also connected to Spirits mode.

Don’t forget that paid DLC was introduced in the last Smash game (3DS/Wii U)

I think that Direct was pretty frickin awesome. I don't fully get the Spirit thing but apparently I can fight Girahim and The Imprisoned so I'm sold. I'm interpreting World of Light as the single player campaign you play through to start collecting Spirits. It looks like a substantial amount of content too.

I like how basic the starting roster is, that's great. As is double points on preload, I'll need to do the maths but that should be a nice reduction further down the line.

Anyone interested in the DLC?

Here's the Direct is anyone missed it.

Thanks. Added to the op.

Yep. I already preordered the Deluxe version. With as much as I’ll play Smash, it’ll be worth every penny.

World of Light looks interesting amongst all the other modes. It should be ok, but I also don’t remember Subspace Emissary at all so the comments for comparison mean nothing to me.

The 2 new fighters look interesting, and look like they bring something different in each. Ken as an echo was a shoe in.

Overall I was more surprised at the removal of For Fun and For Glory + Elite and the preferred rules. It looks like they’re not going full on into the eSports mentality after all.

Everything else looked solid and seemed to have the level of polish I tend to expect from a Nintendo first party title.

This is such a random thing to focus on...but I really liked what I saw of the handheld v docked options customisation. I don't know if any other game does that, but I thought it was pretty cool.

I hear ya. When the BOTW DLC was announced I wasn't impressed that Nintendo was going down that route...but I bought it and Ultimate-ly loved the extra BOTW content. So far, I feel like Nintendo DLC is used as a way to get more of what you love, and doesn't stray into cynical cash-grab territory. Hopefully it stays that way!

Nintendo of Europe needs to get its ass in gear. The game wasn't even in the 'Coming Soon' section when I checked after the Direct. The DLC wouldn't be a no-brainer for me, but I am tempted. The double coins softens the blow a bit.

My Smash Switch system shipped from Amazon this morning

What's exclusive about Piranha Plant? I got the impression it was free for a limited time but would be available after that for a fee.

Yeah, it looks like if you buy the game before January 31st, 2019, you'll be able to redeem Piranha Plant, so it's not just pre-orders. However, after that it will no longer be [free or available, not sure on that part].

Sorry, what I meant was the whole cutscene-heavy sp campaign that was essentially an entire game unto itself.

Every Smash has some form of sp "campaign" whether it's Event Mode, Smash Tour or Subspace Emissary, but Subspace Emissary was a complete change on how Smash played. Not only did you have a bunch of badass cutscenes, which are expensive to develop, but the game itself was changed from a fighting game to a brawler-like game. That's what isn't coming back. It's just too much to develop.

A side scrolling spinoff game would be nice though.

We've yet to see the extent of World of Light, but I doubt it'll have more than an opening cutscene and then an end one. If I'm wrong, though, cool!

I got the same impression. I feel it’s more like “Ohh we couldn’t ship this with the game but, we are technically working on it before the game went gold...So if you pre-ordered you can have it for free.”

Also, it probably comes with a level and music as well like all of the other characters.

I don't understand Pirhana Plant and the weird free aspect at all. It isn't a part of the Fighter Pack but it's not technically a part of the game now? Huh.

Whatever, minor issue, just seems strange.

It’s essentially a high quality pre-order bonus.

I think Sakurai was like, "I don't want to literally die from making this game so let's just ship it without the damned Piranha Plant... And I'll figure out the DLC when I'm ready, dammit!"

Yeah, I might have misunderstood as I thought the Piranha Plant itself was the limited time offer, like so many pre-order exclusive bonuses are. I guess it's going to either be $5.99 like the other Fighter DLC's, or less if it doesn't come with its own stage and set of songs. Doesn't sound like it's part of the pass, though.

I mean, if it will be available later that's better than what I thought it was, which was "you only get this if you pre-order the game, all others are screwed".

Take: if they can’t make something substantially better than Subspace Emissary, they shouldn’t do a long single player mode. There was a lot about the Wii version that fell short for me, but that slog really left a bad taste in my mouth.

"World of Light" actually looks pretty compelling to me. I had zero interest in this game until I saw that. I burned out quickly on how little Smash for Wii U had to offer if you weren't jumping online.
