Every week, compiling the list you see below is like a birthday party. Some weeks it’s one of those off-year birthdays when your relatives don’t know what to get you because you’ve already hit double-digits but aren’t yet in the teens, so you get a nice shirt that doesn’t fit, in a color you hate. Other weeks are like those episodes of 1980s sitcoms where you swear the developers forgot to put any games out – only to surprise you with something really special.

This week is one of those weeks where you hit a big milestone, like 10 or 16, where your parents let you invite the entire class and everybody really comes through (except for Marco, who brought the same He-man figure he bought you last year: Orco). I can’t help but marvel at the bounty before us. This week there are fourteen games I want to tell you about, but since I spent my word count on that birthday metaphor, I’ll limit myself to three, plus a game of the week.

MotherGunship is for those of you who remember Tower Of Guns. The hook is that every time you find a new gun, you can bolt it onto the gun you already have to make an even bigger gun. Frankly, I don’t see how you can not buy a game like that. It says something for this week that it doesn’t make my game of the week.

Thief of Thieves is an action-stealth puzzle game about pulling off big heists, and it has an art style that betrays its progenitor’s roots as a comic book guy. Let’s see if it plays as good as it looks.

Wayward Souls is trying to walk the line between procedurally generated level design and narrative. I don’t know if they’ve got the chops to pull it off, but the character roster and the gritty 16-bit visuals conspire to keep me from caring too much.

For my game of the week, though, I have to go with Tempest 4000. On my Atari Jaguar, the game most commonly plugged in (other than Alien Vs Predator) was Tempest 2000. How they managed to make that game fun with a D-pad is that special kind of magic I don’t want to question, lest it go away. I’m betting that Jeff Minter can still bring the hot electric death, and I will say “yes, yes, yes” to Tempest 4000 for Game of the Week.

I finally finished God of War‘s story (with 5 Valkyries still at large), and my clan in Six Ages is being whittled down by famine, Chaos and poor leadership. So this week, my heart is open to new experiences.

I didn’t play Far Cry 5, but its second bit of DLC drops this week. Lost on Mars looks like an Ubi Doom clone. Points for thinking outside the orb for new levels and weapons and such, but it’s still Ubi gameplay. I don’t wanna climb Mars towers, or collect 10 Martian pelts to craft an ammo pouch for my laser gun, or whatever.

Did you know that you don’t need a VR set to play Star Trek: Bridge Crew, and that you can play it cross-platform? This week it also gets DLC: The Next Generation, which will introduce the Enterprise NCC-1701D and (dun dun dunnn) the Borg. They’ve also thrown in Data-class androids as playable crew, so you too can press X to ask, “What is this fluid coming from my eyes?”

As post-apocalyptic themes stampede through the games industry, they will trample over all game mechanics. Frost gives us an Ice Age-flavoured apocalypse, with survival and group-management prerogatives, handled through a deck-building card game.

Mugsters is a physics-based sandbox puzzler. Aliens have invaded Earth and imprisoned humanity. Your mission is to infiltrate a base and free the prisoners. Each level will have lots of wacky vehicles, environmental traps and whatnot to make each rescue attempt LULZY. It’s hard to tell whether the controls are nerfed to encourage such shenanigans, but certainly you are supposed to enjoy failing as much as succeeding. Is it designed for playing, or watching others play? You be the judge – a cautious GOTW.

Comments

Huh, Wayward Souls is on PC now? It was a mobile title that had the distinction of having touch controls that worked. Still the best controlling action game I've played on my phone.

Glad Hand of Fate 2 is coming to Switch so I can get in on it. The first game was novel, but flawed. Supposedly this sequel is one of those instances where the devs listened to feedback and fixed the issues while also adding new stuff. Good!

Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion is a sure buy. It may be the last game for a cartoon series that's pretty much over (final 4 ep's coming in August), and I sure have enjoyed both the series and the games (many, not all). This one looks promising and, since my daugher's all for it, I'll be picking it up.

That was one of the fourteen that I didn't talk about this week.
