Starfield - Bethesda Next Big IP

I love Bethesda games, but had to laugh at this quote:

"We have an awful lot of people internally playing Starfield, working with Todd and the team," said Booty. "I see bug counts and just by the numbers if it shipped today, Starfield would already have the fewest bugs of any Bethesda game ever shipped."

I mean, that's good to hear, but given how many bugs are typically in a Bethesda game at launch, that can still mean it has a lot of bugs.
I'm still in day one though, full purchase rather than gamepass.

All versions will be digital, says Bethesda support on Twitter. No physical media even for consoles.

So should I buy this on Steam or just play it on GamePass? I don't mind spending the money to help the game (and Bethesda) succeed but I do pay for GamePass, of which I'm sure they get a taste.

To see if it's going to be a hot mess the first weeks/months/year? Gamepass! Remember that Bethesda IS Microsoft. Wherever you buy/play the money is going to Microsoft. If you end up loving it, well probably migrate to Steam, because no matter what they say, mod support is going to be better outside of Microsoft's walls.

Yeah stress-free mod support is the big thing for me. If you already have Gamepass and want to try before you buy, though, it makes sense to do so there first.

And like every publisher not named Nintendo, it will have a $20 off sale within 6-8 weeks of release. So that's a valid wait until real reviews and/or wait until bugs are fixed, plus get it cheaper option.

Yeah I'll be playing on gamepass and then getting it on steam in a sale, probably with the season pass I assume exists

I decided to pre-order the Premium edition upgrade for the GamePass version. If the 5 extra days didn't include a weekend I wouldn't have bothered since I rarely have time to really get into a game on weeknights these day.

Free copy with AMD GPU and CPU purchases.

Looks like 6000 and 7000 series GPUs and 7000 series CPUs. But prebuilt systems with 5000 series CPUs are also included.

If you need an upgrade maybe it's time...

Looks like that SSD requirement may not be too far off. Now the upcoming Ratchet and Clank PC release are requiring an SSD for anything other than 720p.

I imagine more and more games are going to go this route.

Not a fan of AMD and the fact that there's no DLSS support is absolute BS

I'd be happy with more companies using FSR2, which works on any card, rather than the proprietary feature that only works on a subset of Nvidia cards.

I think all games that use up scaling have FSR at the least. Can't recall any games that are just DLSS or XeSS only. But they should be offering all upscaling technologies. Right now it seems like AMD exclusives is locking games down to FSR only (Resident Evil games, Jedi Survivor, and maybe Starfield).

DLSS is the better of the three implementations though as it looks slightly better and offers a smoother experience with steady frame rates. Plus frame generation (DLSS3) is a pretty noticeable jump in smoothing animation and offering higher frame rates. FSR3 is supposed to offer that technology but will see how it goes. FSR works but if I can get a better experience with DLSS would rather not have that option excluded.

Bethesda seems to be kicking off the "getting close!" phase of their marketing cycle now. They just posted three very cool little animated shorts/tone pieces communicating the feel of life in the Starfield galaxy. No spoilers, just some nice little bits of world building (unless you consider out game context world building to be spoilers, of course).

$58, 17% off at GamersGate for the next 6 days.

I thought I saw a similar email for discount at GMG or Fanatical but I can't find it right now.

Ah yes the Fanatical17 coupon still works. So also $58 there with code.

Have they said anything about VR support?

With Skyrim and Fallout VR both being a thing, I'm wondering...

GMG one here at 18% off. Might be able to push it up to 19% with the July XP voucher they offer (one time use) on the XP page.

Wait, this game comes out in September? I thought it'd be a 2024 release!

Almost made me lose interest in the game. If I expect anything out of Bethesda games at this point, it's:

1 - A hilarious number of bugs, a decent number of which are genuinely entertaining
2 - The horniest modding community this side of The Sims.

Two weeks until early release and this thread is buried on page 3. I made a return just to see what kind of hype it was getting with GWJ and am really surprised there's isn't more love.

I’m excited for it, but there isn’t much to talk about at this point. The Starfield Direct showed me everything I needed to see. It’ll be interesting to see how audience reaction compares to Baldur’s Gate 3.

Supposedly review keys will be going out this week, so when the rush of review videos starts to appear the hype train will likely be right behind.

There is also a Q&A in just over 12 hours, on the Bethesda discord sever.

Same.
I'm absolutely excited for it, but I like to go in as blind as possible and am trying to be patient. I also got very soured on the hype train with how it reacted to FO76, and expect that at least some of the people who love to hate Bethesda are more than ready to start trying to piss in everyone's cheerios once it starts getting closer to releasing.

Starfield is about the state it launches in for me, as much as ‘when I’m done with BG3’.

I’m expecting it to be in a much better state a couple of months down the line. But we’ll see.

Yeah, I think most folks are really into BG3 right now. No sense getting hyped for a game when you have an excellent game in front of you. But I will drop BG3 like a hot knife when Starfield drops.

I intend to beat BG3 before I play Starfield. Also not sure I want to be hyped if it will need months of patches. Just going to wait and see.

That's what I was gonna say. Going by my friends list on steam everyone is playing the hell out of BG3.

That's definitely warranted after past releases but the difference this time around is MS now owns Bethesda and dedicated their entire QA team to a successful launch. They are all in.

I'm quite exited for it but I have gamepass, so I don't have to worry about paying for it so I don't feel the need to keep up with coverage. And honestly Bethesda games are a pretty known quantity at this point. It's going to be a fun world to explore, with a cool vibe, and basically no writing of any note save a few sidequests. It will also have wildly ill advised subplots about race relations of some sort that will baffle me as to how they made it into the game. See Skyrim's Nords vs Elves and Fallout 4's underground railroad. I will still play the shit out of it for the next 10 years while listening to podcasts and think how I should really get back to whatever hobby I feel guilty about not spending time on like art, or guitar, or whoever I am dating at the time. (sorry Doug I hope the bar exam went well I had to get my settlement set up though).

Also yeah BG3 and Armored Core so it's not a main priority. Though I suspect I will be mostly done with BG3 by then my co op buddy and I are blowing through it

They just announced the game went gold. Preloads on Xbox and the Windows app start tomorrow, and start August 30 for Steam.

Corporations saying they are doing something, and actually doing it are two completely different things.
