With E3 coming out, most of the major developers are punting this week, and I don’t blame them. Anybody who would write something that could have a significant impact on mass purchasing decisions isn’t talking about games that are coming out this week.

I suppose my pick is something of a punt as well. I first played Flashback – AKA "Total Recall: The Game" – on my Atari Jaguar. I was impressed by the fluidity of the animation, and the bottomless magazine on the main character’s pistol. I was also impressed by the way that someone made a compelling platformer with something like two seconds of input lag. I don’t know why it worked, but it does.

The 25th anniversary edition of Flashback is hitting the Switch on Friday. With luck, it will be a port with a few quality-of-life improvements instead of a full remaster. I don’t want a Flashback that plays like Mario. I want that full-on, clunky, original-Prince of Persia stuff.

I’m not even going to think about how long 25 years is. Just bring the nostalgia! Flashback 25th Anniversary Edition gets my pick for Game of the Week.

E3 week plus a stubbornly un-curated Steam list means little of interest. Kick back and tend to your Pile!

If you HAVE to get something, well, the LEGO games are solid. Like McDonald’s, you know what you’re getting. LEGO The Incredibles sounds like Marvel Super Heroes: a roster of characters with different powers, a hub world, side missions, collectables. There’s some team-up features to unlock different builds and powers. Sounds like they’re adding another patty to an existing burger rather than reinventing the menu. It’s fine, so long as you’re not eating it every week.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Comments

I LURRRVED the old Flashback. That, and Out of This World had such elegant mo-cap-like animations that really made the best of what was even then a stylized blocky pixels. I replayed those suckers for years.
