Wow! That was pretty impressive hahahaha I might try that approach if I can't do it the "hard" way.

Why does that even work?

I'm guessing it's somehow getting the AI back to an unaware state and open to a deathblow. Mechanical spoiler for the previous boss:

Spoiler:

For O'Rin, I found out you can jump on her head, and then you can get a deathblow, so you can jump to the second stage. There may be something similar at work here.

Well, it's been a fruitful night!

Spoiler:

Corrupted Monk specter thingy taken down on my first attempt of the evening. I used one instance of confetti, then proceeded to use the firecracker liberally. Keeping my distance in the middle ground - i.e not close but not too far - I kept baiting him into doing its jump attack, which I dodged and exploited.

Then, it was onto the only other place I could apparently teleport to: Ashina Castle Dungeon something idol. I eventually made it to the Owl Shinobi, but man, all those purple guys at once were taking a toll on me until I decided to say "screw it" and grappled my way through them with nary any damage.

Two attempts and the Owl was down, though I'm bugged by how easy it is to lose lock-on on bosses... so I imagine it has to do with my frantic movement and somehow pressing R3 inadvertently.

But this was pretty fun.

And that's the fourth ending cleared, and all achievements in the bag.

Now I'm uninstalling it game so I'm not tempted to go for a fifth playthrough.

How long did it take you on each consecutive play through?

Congrats I started on the 3rd the other day, but decided to take a tiny break before I go for Shura and Return. I made it to Genichiro in less than 2 hours though, so I imagine the last two endings will be pretty quick.

Whooo. Very pleased to take down:

Spoiler:

Owl Father

That took a solid 90mins of work. Consulted a couple of vid guides. The first one was a cheese strategy which kinda worked but took forever and really didn't work for the second phase. The second one was a really forward aggressive strategy which also kind of worked but was poorly explained. Mashing together what I'd learnt from those did actually work with a bit more practice. Plus there was a bit of luck, the winning attempt I managed to get a markedly long (almost) stunlock sequence in both phases.

Thanks to ccesarano, I've got a copy of this game coming my way. Excited to be finally jumping in! Spoiler free starter tips welcome.

Um, Git Gud?

All joking aside, what worked for me was trying to eschew all Souls-like thinking and trying to learn the rhythm and timing of parrying - it's slightly different in Sekiro - while embracing the fact that I would die. A lot.

Also, stealth is king during most of the game, so don't be afraid to pick enemies off one at a time while allowing their aggro to reset to idle. This, however, won't work on minibosses and bosses; if you let them go back to idle after you've done some damage to them or dealt a deathblow (they have two at least), their health and counters will reset, so stealth deathblow the first time if possible, and then get ready for a duel. Hope that helps.

So, I've made it to...

Spoiler:

The alternative version of Hirate Estate. I hate the purple ninjas even more now. Had to take a lot of care to pick them off one by one before making it to the drunk miniboss again. Having also picked off his entourage, I then proceeded to pick him apart on my first attempt. Now I'm about to go to what I can only imagine is the boss of the area where Lady Butterfly used to be.

I decided to take a break for now. Will tackle that later on today, for sure.

Shameless self promotion: A collection of tips I posted a couple weeks ago.

I'll add a few more that I have picked up since then:

Load up on spirit emblems early - If you're anything like me, you won't use too many spirit emblems early on, but you'll chew through them later in the game. This is the only consumable that increases in price as you progress. Drop most of your early gold into building a stockpile of emblems so you can use them freely without needing to farm. A stockpile of 300-400 emblems is very attainable considering how few things you have to spend coin on at the start of the game.

Separate playing to learn from playing to win - One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is going aggressive against new miniboss or boss fights on the first attempt. That's the hard way to win. Instead, go into every new encounter with a mindset to learn. Don't attack at all. Just block, deflect, dodge away, and start learning the perilous timings. Only once you feel like you have a basic understanding of the enemy moveset is it time to start weaving in attacks of your own.

Use your damn items - Consumables are not required to win any battle, but they sure do help. Don't hoard them. Fistfuls of ash work against just about everything, minibosses and bosses included. Oil urns don't increase the damage on your flame vent by much, but they guarantee burn status and an opening to attack. Items that reduce poison, burn, and terror buildup also increase resistance to those effects. Use them liberally against enemies that inflict those status effects.

If you're planning to farm, use Mibu Balloons then. If you're never planning to farm, use Mibu Balloons whenever you are about to blow through a large group of enemies. The different variants stack, so don't fret about popping 3 or 4 at once.

Use candy against bosses and minibosses. Their effects are significant:

Ako's: Increases attack and posture damage by 12.5%
Gohan's: Reduces posture damage by 33%
Ungo's: Reduces damage taken by 33%

When you're learning a fight for the first time, you're going to get hit, so pop Ungo's just before you engage. When you're planning to win mostly through deflection, Gohan's gives you posture to mess up a few extra deflections before your guard is broken. If you're confident in your damage avoidance capabilities, use Ako's to get the job done.

Last but not least, the stealth candy is incredibly powerful for any stealth section.

I didn't time them, but I'd say 60+, ~10, ~4, ~6. I went for the Shura ending on the third run, and I paused to farm skill points on the last.

Woohoo! The game has fallen before my blades! I may or may not come back to it for NG+ etc. I've got other games in the pile that I've been neglecting.

Well, I can't seem to get the final bits against...

Spoiler:

The Owl Shinobi in Hirata Estates. I seem not to be "with it" today. nearly 20 attempts and some were disastrous, while others got me to just a few hits from getting the second death blow before I'd spent everything. The camera seems to lock off too often for no apparent reason; I understand it will do that when he does the disappearing art, but not when I'm literally a few feet away from him and he's neither doing that nor throwing a firecracker. It's quite aggravating, that, and has certainly eroded some of the fun I've had with the game. This has happened in various other boss and miniboss fights. Have decided to take another break from the game. This is the first boss I've encountered that has driven me to a frustration-induced break hahaha. I'm sure I'll get him eventually, just not now. Really wish they'd do something about the lock-on. Anyone else had that problem? I don't see that happen at all in any videos that I've seen. Just wondering if I'm somehow pressing down on the R3 button, though I doubt it, as the only time I use the right analog at all is precisely because it unlocks the camera and I have to scramble for Sekiro's life to get the boss back into focus.

Maybe later tonight... maybe in a few days. We'll see.

Life’s been busy and I didn’t get to play for a few weeks. I got to play today for the first time and every available mini boss or boss wiped the floor with me. Any recommendations on how to relearn the game halfway through? Currently at the Ashina Castle main boss.

If you're at the boss, you can go to the antechamber idol and do one on one duels with the blue samurai. They are not easily spammed with attacks, so you can get a chance to practice deflections and perilous attacks.

Don't forget that you can go back to your training buddy at the dilapidated temple.

Thanks, but I meant to mention I’ve always found him too slow and passive to simulate anything near real fighting.

Well, tried to take that same boss on..

Spoiler:

Owl in Hirata

... to no avail. I was actually far worse the handful of times I just attempted. Eff that guy, and eff my apparently diminishing skills. I think I'll give the game a day or two, as I used to with Souls games and boss walls.

For that boss people are struggling with

Learn the patterns. It took me hours to get him, and a day off from the game. Some suggestions below

Spoiler:

Firecrackers work on him.
Mikiri counter his thrust which comes after firecrackers frequently.
Don't be afraid to back off and heal/recover posture.
Mortal blade is helpful as well
This is slower battle, you need to reduce his health, don't worry about his posture.
Once his posture is at 1/4 to 1/2 start going in with blocks (if you have the arts that increase/decrease posture on attack/blocks)
Hit a few times and get out
After the first deathblow change your tactics to being mobile and running around
Again, in and out, not toe to toe
Mikiri counter is again useful

The saga continues! Defeated a lightning flavored adversary, rescued a person, talked to a lot of people. Located and acquired a new weapon. Need to revisit a couple of old spots to see if I can make progress.

I'm so slow. I'm going at a snail's pace compared to you dudes. I took down the armored Knight fairly easy. I took down long arms Joe at the temple first try. He seemed extremely optional. They put him in a walled off area. I turned off the pc and thought I made good progress.

Eh, it's more about enjoying what you're doing, yeah?

Believe me, there are times when I end up feeling like I'm NOT enjoying it, though winning is satisfying!

I have survived the tutorial and i’m already digging how they are playing with the formula here! I’m also enjoying them trying something new with their narrative style.

Spoiler:

The trick to phase 2 of the giant monkey eludes me. I find it impossible to read the block timing on the slashy attacks. To make up for it I also get murdered by the sweeps.

And as usual right after I complain I beat the thing. Of course I had the help of a weird A.I. lockup. But all is fair in souls and cheese.

The umbrella is always your friend.

I didn't have too much trouble avoiding the attack the umbrella cancels. Ah well.

psu_13 wrote:

Spoiler:

it protects against terror so you don't have to sprint away

Re: JC

Spoiler:

Yeah I realize that ... I had tended to use up all my emblem resources fire crackering the first stage anyway. But I'll keep this in mind for when I see this creature again. Thanks.
