World Cup 2018 - Russia

Thank you for the big dumb smile on my face right now.

Belgium and, especially, England love to disappoint. I don't mind if they keep that tradition.

I took another look at England's jerseys, and nevermind. Plain white or a red with a sublimated cross, which is very similar to my red South Korea jersey.

I told my kids today that we could each pick a team and if they won the World Cup we'd all go out for sundaes. I'm sticking with South Korea but my oldest is trying to talk me out of it.

If watching replays, you can safely skip the Costa Rica and Serbia game. Very one sided.

World Cup month in USA aka 'well my mother's brother's uncle's neighbor's dentist is from X so that's why I'm rooting for them" month

I texted my mother, but it appears the only country I'm descended from that's in this year's edition is England. Apparently we've got some Czech, like a lot of Texans.

I still think England are going to do well this tournament. Haven't watched today's matches yet but it sounds like I should watch both Germany-Mexico and Switzerland-Brazil.

For me, it really is a tourney up in the air. England with the right draw can go to the finals - just like 7 other teams that feel legitimate enough.

On a whim I bought Mexican beer and not German beer last night for today's games. So...my bad?

WHO NEEDS THE DEAF CAT, WE HAVE A NEW WORLD CUP PROGNOSTICATOR

I've lived in Costa Rica before and had a wonderful time, so I'm always happy if they have a good run. But wow, they looked abysmal on the attack today.

...Was it a ‘mexican’ beer breeed by German brewmasters? Like Dos Equis or tecate? There are a ton of Germans in Mexico.

Can I interest you in some Portuguese beers?

No.

Keep with the Mexican beers.

I would very much like to cause Mixolyde to be hospitalized due to alcohol poisoning in an attempt to get our preferred teams to advance through the World Cup.

Modelo Especial from Nava, Mexico, not sure if they count.

Not until Ronaldo retires, I hate that guy. Too conceited, too smug, too thin, and too pretty.

The only country I am willing to die for is my own, and they are not in the tournament. But if you want to mail me enough alcohol to get black-out drunk and pay for a babysitter, my liver may be available (No Portugal).

Apparently according to Wikipedia, Modelo especial was an Austrian immigrant recipe. So you’re good there you can’t drink enough of that to get them to the final.

Well, now we know he wasn't drinking Bud last fall.

In other news, I am wearing my South Korean tie and cuff links today.

Would have to be Super Bock. My father in law is Portuguese and a Sporting fan.

When I said Jordan Henderson was probably the weak link in the England lineup I didn't think Harry Maguire would be starting.

I am not one to often criticize officials (I used to be one), but the "foul" for which the Penalty was awarded versus the takedown of Kane a few minutes later was pretty bizarre.

(England vs Tunisia)

I'm starting to feel like all the penalties are ruining this tournament.

Referees are too lenient in general but the grappling at set pieces was especially bad this match.

England today: very good in the first half, bit meh in the second, and great at set pieces.

Harry Kane getting it done today! And handily beating Mo Salah for the golden boot at the moment!

Send him my condolences.

Agreed, and it happened twice. It seemed well beyond bumping and grabbing—more of a full scale bear hug sack the quarterback type of thing.

My impressions of the England v Tunisia game were:

England actually did quite well in the face of some very obstinate opposition. In the past we would have given up long before the end, but this time we stuck at the task and Kane got his (and the team's) just rewards. I am fully aware this probably puts me in a different camp to the vast majority of my compatriots.

I though the penalty, though soft, was actually a penalty. As soon as you raise your arms in the area you are at risk. I question Walker's decision making there much more than the referee's.

The referee was poor though. I'm guessing that unless an incident occurs "on the ball" then VAR isn't consulted but missing Kane being manhandled to the floor not once but twice wasn't good. He was also far too tolerant of Tunisia's antics for much of the game.

Tunisia are "niggly" opponents. Far too ready to go to ground, commit a petty foul and take forever just to break play up. I can't stand teams like that, drives me nuts.

Rashford and Loftus-Cheek look much better options than Alli (who looked a bit crocked for much of the first half) and Sterling, who once again flattered to deceive in a competitive England game.

All hail Sir Harry Kane.

We should get past Panama without too many issues, the Belgium game will hopefully be dead rubber and both teams will settle for 1st / 2nd however they come into the match. Depends if the Germans recover I guess.

Expect a lot of the same fouling strategy from Panama that you saw from Tunisia. It's the CONCACAF way. And honestly, as obnoxious as it is, it's probably the "right" strategy for much less-talented teams.

THE AMOUNT OF PENALTIES IS TOO DAMN HIGH!

But yeah, seems like there's a penalty almost every game.

I'm assuming about Sporting.

Because Super Bock > Sagres.

I am going to take a guess that he is a Benfica fan!
