Battle Royale Bootcamp drops this week and solves the main problem I have with the battle-royale phenomenon: the involvement of 99 other people, all of whom are better at battle-royale games than I am. So if you want to play a battle-royale game without this multiplayer fad crapping all over it, there’s your game of the week.

Before we get to my game of the week, I’d like to take a moment to point out that it’s a stone-cold crime that nobody ever made a decent Waterworld game. I liked the movie a lot, and water physics have reached the point where someone should have a go at it. Happily, someone has made a start. Raft is an open-world survival game where you start out on a small raft, adrift at sea, and have to collect resources to make your raft into a veritable floating city. You can catch debris with a grappling hook, or free-dive to scavenge the ocean floor, because this particular ocean isn’t very deep.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like you’ll be beset by nicotine addicts on jet skis, but there are giant sharks, which isn’t nothing. For taking the principles of Minecraft and mixing them up in a blender with Kevin Costner’s underappreciated epic tale of sail and recycled urine, Raft gets my pick of the week.

I'm curious about Space Hulk: Deathwing as a worthwhile co-op experience, but initial impressions of the PC release sounded less than enthusiastic. What would have been an obvious pick instead becomes a chance to wait, see, and perhaps snag on a sale.

I imagine the main excitement out there will be for Dark Souls Remastered. Made available on more powerful consoles and upgraded for PC's, it offers the chance to skulk about depressing ruins of a merciless world. Otherwise, you might be looking to snag Detroit: Become Human because you're still holding out hope that David Cage can release a product that's finally firing on all cylinders. I enjoyed Heavy Rain well enough for an incomplete product, but that's the catch, isn't it? You can tell the game was meant to have multiple outcomes but was released with just a single one. Beyond: Two Souls had a lot of great moments, but the overall story itself was rubbish told out of sequence to masquerade as something artistic and meaningful. Maybe Detroit: Become Human will be the sci-fi execution of Heavy Rain's ambition, but I'm not willing to drop sixty bucks on finding out.

Fortunately I may not be dropping cash at all, as that Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon retro throwback game seems to be part of my Kickstarter backer awards. 8-Bit slaughter of nocturnal monstrosities gets my pick of the week.

The Elder Scrolls Online just keeps on trucking. Summerset is technically its second expansion, offering up the home of the High Elves to explore and a new quest line. It introduces jewelry crafting and a chance to get your Psijic skills on. I love that Tamriel is being rendered piece by piece, but still blanch at the MMOeyness of it all. I may jump in when I’m sick of waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6, which is (checks watch) probably around November – about the same time I’m due to finish God of War on my current difficulty setting.

Nothing gets me off the PC and back onto my trusty console faster than a Paradox game that won’t work. So, thank BATTLETECH that I’m ignoring the rest of the PC release list. The PS4 list is the same games anyway, just 18 months later and without the spammy Achievement Hunter titles.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon looks like fun, but also like it would eat all my quarters. I’m particularly worried about the “LIFE” counter in the top left corner there.

I’m not falling for Detroit: Become Human. Given all we know about David Cage at this point, it’d be like turning out for The Happening after watching Lady in the Water.

So, for the curmudgeonly single player, that leaves EVERSPACE. It’s a shiny, roguelike space shooter that’s been out for about a year on PC, but its release on consoles means I don’t have to buy a joystick to enjoy it properly.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

No one is interested in Runner3? Is it because the name looks like so much other crap coming out that it doesn't stick out? Indeed. It's actually Bit.Trip Runner 3 by Choice Provisions Inc., which used to be called Gaijin Games. So, yeah, the company changed names and the game series changed names. Someone should teach a class in how not to do marketing...

Anyway, the series ran dry for me in the second game, so I'm shocked they're doing a third. Definitely stepped up the visuals and overall weirdness.

Yeah, I don't know why they abandoned the series name. Runner3 sounds like a generic endless runner #1,294,203 on the App store. I liked the first couple of games but for whatever reason, not feeling much excitement for a third.

Disappointing that State of Decay 2 dropped the ball on multiplayer. Co-op was the main reason I was interested in the title but forcing the players to be near each other and having only the host make progress is such a turn off. That combined with it being a UWP Windows 10 Store app are enough to turn me off. I think they accidentally leaked a Steam version coming later and hopefully by then, updates address the issues that reviewers had.

Pixel Junk 2 looks really interesting visually. Will be keeping an eye out on the reception.

The Bloodstained side game looks pretty neat.

And I will pick up Dark Souls: Remastered at some point but not at launch.

Pretty packed week.

(Bit.Trip) Runner 3 looks fun!

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon will probably get some love from me. Scratch that Castlevania itch that has been too long unattended.

Bloodstained. Nice.

Waiting for Dark Souls remastered on Switch.

"Achievement Machine".

Someone kill Steam, please.

Ancestors Legacy looks like a promising RTS. Hopefully some reviews will come out soon.

Eh. I'm not going to stop shopping at my grocery store because they sell eggplant.

Eggplant is nutritious and can sometimes taste good.

Achievement Hunter games are the equivalent of your grocery store stocking only Faygo and Funyuns.

My grocery store needs to stop. There are too many kinds of Fig Newtons. The whole wheat ones look almost exactly like the regular ones, and sometimes they stock the berry ones in front of the good ones.

Overall, my grocery store has a big problem with cookie discoverability, but they just keep adding new kinds of sugar wafers and hope we don’t notice.

Do they have banana newtons yet?

Not at my store, but they do have apple Newton’s, which seems appropriate.

They should put this on the case!

Look at the WiiU hanging on in there! Good for you WiiU!

Well, that's it. We're through the looking glass, folks.

Can't find Bloodstained.

*Delayed on Xbone, and I think either 3DS or Switch.

Xbox, yes. Switch I can see, but not 3DS version.

Bummer, but I can wait. It's only a week or so. I'm excited to play this because always wanted 8-bit Castlevania-Igavania game that has no flicker and isn't an emulated classic.
