Great songs. Great covers.

I can't believe I forgot it, but Heart's cover of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Led Zeppelin Tribute is nothing short of amazing. Drums are played by Robert Plant's son, lead guitar is a Peewee Herman look alike, and the vocals are powerful and bring a tear to my every time. I love Stairway to Heaven, but I'd dare to say Heart does it better than Led Zeppelin themselves.

Going back to my OP, Leo Maraachioli is a Norwegian YouTube personality that takes online requests for metal covers of a lot (222 and growing) of popular songs dating from today back to the 70s. He records and merges tracks of himself playing lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, drums, and vocals with an occasional guest guitarist/vocalist. Several of the accompanying videos – some of which are acted by “muppets” - are funny and entertaining. I'm not a huge fan of "scream" metal, so I take a hard pass on a lot of it, but he often steps outside that particular mold and has some real gems in there including:

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing (linked in my OP)
REM - Losing My Religion
4 Non Blondes - Whats Up
Cranberries - Zombie (lightyears better than the cover that is making the rounds right now)

Going back to my OP for a minute, even if you're not a huge fan of blues, the lungs on Matt Andersen in his Al Green / Ain't No Sunshine cover are absolutely insane (he's also one helluva guitarist). If you don't want to watch the whole video, just skip ahead to the :45 second mark and watch to 1:45.

Edit: an even better example is at 5:38-6:10.

You're welcome.

Man, I'm glad to see some love for Lucero here. They're one of my favourite bands - so many Jameson-soaked nights spent with their music! I think I prefer it when they play that cover stripped back:

My liver is very thankful I didn't discover them until late in life! : D

If you like stripped back Lucero there's a short set of theirs that's still on youtube where it's just them two that's fantastic: LINK. I think the songs are available individually, too.

Oh, and Screaming Females were mentioned: another cover from her with Shirley Manson from Garbage:

oh, and while I'm here, the SECOND best cover of a Slade song ; D

I feel like I should like Screaming Females a lot more than I do; I've heard them do several great covers then I get to the original stuff and just... bleh.

I love the Lucero love!

You can also check out some outstanding acoustic versions here as well...

One of my favorites Moracchioli's earlier covers.

Take Me to Church by Hozier

I really like Morgan James.

I'm sure everyone has been inspired to look up their favorite cover songs, and while looking for Melissa Etheridge's version of "The Weakness in Me" I came across this which I had no idea existed but now don't know how I lived without:

Lovin the suggestions everyone - keep em coming!

Totally forgot about this group's stuff. It's a music school for kids up in Chicago. They do one of my favorite covers of 46 and 2 by Tool and a whole slew of Danzig toons!

Got to mention a couple of my favorite cover bands. First there's Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, a punk rock supergroup that puts a punk spin on some well known songs:

Then there's the Detroit Cobras, who draw mostly from some lesser known from the 60s:

The Cleverly's whole catalog seems custom made for this thread. Some examples:

And here we have Buckwheat Zydeco's take on a classic. Back when Rock Band 3 was a thing I desperately wanted them to do this track complete with the organ part:

This cover version is so different from the original, you should listen to the original for a few seconds just to refresh your memory. It’s a GREAT cover.

Rock and Roll by Led Zeplin...

...now by Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Page

How have I not posted this in this thread yet?

This is a really chill version of Smooth Criminal I've alway liked:

The bulk of her vids are en español, but here's Mell Peck with a phenomenal take on Zombie (as a RIP to O'Riordan). Even clips certain words in similar fashion / watch that head snap back from the mic.

I loved that cover of Zombie so much. I think Doloris would be impressed and flattered.

This cover falls a little further into the “interesting” category than “face melting rock”. It’s a traditional Japanese cover of AC/DC’s “Back in Black”. Actual cover starts around the 0:53 mark.

An awesome job and very true to the original. If I wasn’t watching it, I would probably assume this was The Cranberries themselves. I would rank this as one of my top two Zombie covers - the other being the Leo Moracchioli cover I posted earlier. I MUCH prefer these two to the one that new one that’s making the rounds on the radio right now.

Was just recently reminded of this cover; haven't thought about it in years...

Another one in the unsuspecting but surprisingly good section:

This one's kind of weird.
