Battlefield V - Catch All

Anyone else seeing a bug on PS4 where joining a Squad Conquest match gives you a black screen? I can shoot, reload and move around, but the visuals don't load.

It goes away if I kill the application and restart the game, but it's happened three or four times now, only on Squad Conquest.

It wouldn't be Dice if a bug that was around in the BF4 days, Xbox, wasn't still floating around in the code.

I had it and was able to correct it. I found a solution in a forum. You need to press start to bring up the menu you cannot see. Go down 3 times using the dpad, then up, then X. That should redeploy your character and the map screen should now be visible.

There may be other combinations that also work, but I followed the directions broke out of the black screen with the loading V symbol in the upper right.

Why go down three and one up... It seems easier to just go down two. Or did you forget a step?

I am not a big fan of chapters that force you to play game modes for rewards that one is interested in. I cannot stand Breakthrough for example but if I want that reward, I am forced to play it. Worse is that some conditions you have to actually win games to get more points. It's a totally sh*t concept.

You're not wrong and there isn't a skipped step. I just repeated the directions from the other forum verbatim. I'm sure down two would work since I think I ended up going down three, accidentally up two and down one, and it worked fine.

I've only had the black screen happen once and haven't tried other permutations. I think anything on that menu that changes the main display mode should work. I have since read another forum that just went down 3, I think, and it brings up the squad menu, and that broke out of the black screen.

I actually decided to play the single player campaign of this game. There's quite a lot of tedious game play in it, but one thing I would say is that the final chapter, "The last Tiger", is genuinely good. And I'm not someone who usually enjoys the story of games.

I'm the opposite. I'm not a huge fan of Breakthrough, but I like that it encourages me to mix it up a bit and play something other than Conquest. I didn't care for it at first, but after completing all the checklist items for this week, I find that I enjoy it much more than I did to begin with.

I started with the single player, but hated the first two missions. First, they were too long both in terms of time-to-complete and the amount of walking involved.

Second, I felt that the enemy placement and response made for too much trial and error. You'd think you'd cleared out an area, only to discover one more enemy nearby hidden behind a wall... who - bizarrely - had not responded to the almighty gunfight that had been taking place for the previous two minutes.

Third, the one-man-army nature of the campaign felt very much at odds with the squad-focused nature of the multiplayer.

I wasn't going to touch the last couple of missions, but - based on your recommendation - I'll give them a try this weekend.

They get better as they go along. Like you, I found the British missions to be absolutely dull and being isolated as a single soldier on a huge map just didn’t work. There were also so many ridiuclous moments in it with over the top cockneys.

The African campaign is ok, as it does actually have some squad based stuff in.

But as mentioned, you could probably just skip them all and do the last tiger; I’ll be keen to know if you feel as impressed with the writing as I did for that chapter. I do like how they split them up and let you play whatever as well as trying to give some form of history lesson. The Senegal history in particular is welcome, as although there’s one too many Hollywood moments in the campaign for me (still, a lot better than the campaigns before it), the contribution of colonies is often forgotten (especially so in their case!)

Sadly, the completionist in me won't let me skip to 'The Last Tiger'. I must enjoy/endure the penultimate mission, 'Tirailleur'(?)

It's interesting that you mention the history lesson woven in to the single-player missions. I really enjoyed the way that Battlefield 1 taught me about aspects of WW1 that I knew little or nothing about. I can see that B5 is trying to do something similar. I really enjoyed the 'Nordlys' storyline, for example. But the structure of each mission - together with the gameplay - feels significantly worse.

Related to my 2nd gripe - about enemy placement - it also feels like there are simply too many enemies in each level. The game implies that stealth is an option for each mission, but it really isn't (in an initial playthrough at least). Eventually, one guard will spot you or one of your assassinations, and then all hell will break loose, and it becomes whack-a-mole. Except - because its video games - for the toughs or mini-bosses - who ignore the gunfire and shouts of their comrades and wait until they are triggered at the right time and place .(Nordlys's flamethrower users, I am looking at you!).

Nordlys and Last Tiger are the standouts for me; the first is not the one they should have lead with, hammy acting and busted/not smart spawn triggers/scripting at the bases makes it frequently misbehave unless you play it exactly the way the designer expected it to be played.

So proud of myself, got my first "GWJ is hacking" line in chat. It should be an in game achievement.

and were you?

Ja! That's THE question right?

If you had seen my score you will notice that I was not cheating or I'm the worst cheater ever

BTW, why is everyone using hacking instead of cheating?

I enjoyed Tirailleur, you spend time fighting as part of a unit in it.

But the absolutely shocking ‘Cockney’ accent in the SBS missions really took me out of the game. It’s so, so bad. And it’s not like there’s a shortage of Cockney actors.

Hows the XBOX population. I have this game on XBOX and PC. Would prefer to play on XBOX since that is my better screen, but definately need some squad mates. Is there a regular night folks jump in on?

I play almost every night, z4r4k in Origin and I'm on PC

I'm on PC as well, DakhathGWJ on Origin

I am finding myself playing game modes I have no interest in playing just to get these Tide of War unlocks. I don't like it at all as it's just not my playstyle to play meat grinder modes like Frontlines, Breakthrough etc. Some of the unlock modes allow you to play other modes to get objectives but the path eventually leads back to completing the game mode to get a win or decap etc. It sucks big time...

Combined Arms just came out. Allows for 4 player co-op scenarios. You gain experience normally here too! Need some folks on PC to help out since there doesn't seem to be any matchmaking. Any interest tonight?

Still need some help on Combined Arms mode, anyone willing/able to help out? I'm on the PC. Thanks!

Want to try tomorrow night? I'm EST timezone.

You around tonight? If so, what time?

Some not official info on Firestorm

Trailer leaked

Looks good for a training vid. Looking forward to more info and the official trailer.

Yeah i'm in

How exciting. I'll be there on xbox though I fear this will be a sniper fest.

Take DICE's engine, strain it through Criterion's Burnout sensibilities ... cautiously optimistic.
