DJ Goodjer's Dropmix Dance Party

I thought that we could share some of our favorite mixes, and talk about them.

It turns out that while you're playing Dropmix you can save your current mix by hitting a little button on the app. You can listen to them later in a different section of the app. From there, you can have the app render a short video of the mix. I always choose "high quality" and "full mix". The video is never longer than 1:30 or so. I've only ever played the freestyle mode, so I'm not sure if you can save mixes while your playing the actual game.

Probably the best way to post your mixes to this thread is to upload the video to YouTube, and then use the built in function on this site. If anyone knows of a better way, please share it below. There is a way to send a link that only works in the Dropmix app, but then people who don't have, or don't want the app will be left out.

I really hope that this thread takes off!!

Thanks for making this. I love Dropmix, but had to set it aside for a while... looking forward to getting back into it in June.

Okay, I'll go first.

One thing that I find so amazing about music is how making small changes or adjustments can make the same song sound so incredibly different. These next two mixes use the same metal guitar track, but just by changing the tempo and key, the same track ends up sounding pretty unique. I want to point out that in both examples the mix is in a minor key. Its simply been changed from D flat minor to A minor. Sorry for getting all nerdy about it, but I'm a music nerd.

Dolly Parton vs Pinhole Cage

Anderson .Paak vs Pinhole Cage

Wow. Those actually sound good - especially the second.

The few previous songs I'd heard sounded awful, but thi makes me interested in trying the game out.

Just found this mix too:

It's a shame it's still so expensive with the cards as an extra cost.

I found it on Amazon for $40 USD. It was one of those lightning sales where you had to buy it in the next 30 minutes. But a friend of mine also bought it for $40 USD at an electroncs store (I forget which one). So if you’re patient and watchful, you might find a similar deal.

Of course, I’ve since then spent about $200 USD on booster packs, card sleeves, and card boxes.

Well it's $57 right now on Amazon, down from the MSRP $99.

EDIT - Got it wrong. It's £80 here. So..$100

Also, I'm getting some vibes of the PS3 eye toy augmented reality card game tht I never got to play online after I bought it on ebay.

I have roughly 250 cards total. They have announced 2 more booster packs, one of which you can pre order right now. And so far we are still in what they are calling “episode 1”.

Even if I never buy another card, my kids and I will be able to enjoy this “game” for years to come. I’m honestly more worried that the hardware unit will stop working before I’ve had my fill of Dropmix sessions.

Definitely don't pay full price for the hardware; it goes on sale a lot. The booster packs are where they get your money. (Between the embedded RFID chip and licensing, though, I'm sure there's some overhead.)

There's a reddit with a pinned post collecting info on what's in all the booster packs, if you want to shop selectively. If you try to "collect 'em all" you will spend a lot and go insane. So I'd stick to "Playlist Packs" (which have 16 cards) for genres you like, and look whether any "Booster packs" (six non-random but hidden from view cards) have something you feel you must have. I've discovered that other than vocals, though, you might be really surprised by what you like; tiny bits and pieces of songs can be very different in different places, as seen above. If you're just trying to make mixes, it pays off to play around and try random stuff.

The actual game is almost an afterthought, but if you have one or three friends who want to play something super casual, it can be a lot of fun. And you can stumble onto some neat mixes accidentally.

I also bought the blind packs at a reasonable price on Amazon. I think there's series 1, 2, and 3. Or maybe its just 2. I forget. The thing is, they aren't really blindpacks. The cards inside are static, which wasn't apparent to me at first. Each series has 5 different packs containing 5 unique cards. I ended up paying very close to $1 USD per card.

Well, anyway. I made this mix earlier today. I learned that you can very easily set up screen recording on iPhone 6 and up. It's 13 minutes long. I made a couple of blunders while switching cards, but It's still pretty dope!

I find the pack thing so, so confusing. If I understood more about what was going on, I'd be very likely to buy.

I've been invited to a summer birthday bbq and this seems like it would be ideal for that.

EDIT

The whole thing is confusing. Even the naming of packs as 'derby' or 'fluff' or ourourborous (and I knew that word already) is... getting in the way of sales.

THe mystery should be in the combinations you come up with, not in trying to figure out what the f*ck is going on. BRanding impeding customer experience.

It’s not confusing at all when you use the app to manage your collection. The last 2 booster packs that I bought were from Target. Both times I opened the app, looked at my collection and quickly realized that I didn’t yet own that pack.

Without the app though it really is confusing. There’s one pack who’s picture is a diamond, but the pack is called “flawless”. Not quite the first thing I think of when I see a cut gemstone. Another has a picture of sunglasses and it’s called “mirrors”. Kinda’ vague.

Actually, I'm just going to post this in here, for convenience: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

A while back they did a survey asking about things like how packs were distributed, which makes me hope they're considering a less confusing method in the future. The confusion, coupled with spotty availability of certain packs, is a nightmare for collectors.

I've always liked the idea of Dropmix, but the collectible packs thing put me right off. I know they're not blind, so they're better than Magic cards, but I'd still feel like I have a gimped thing if I just got the base box.

If you are the kind of person who needs "whole collection or nothing," it will frustrate you, yes. Because even if the packs aren't blind, no online vendors sell you particular packs; so you have to hit stores in person, or buy blind and hope, if you need a complete collection. (Oh, yeah, and there are a few cards that are "promo only" requiring attending a con or hitting eBay.)

I think that for these physical cards, they need to switch to selling only full "playlists" (which are some of what they sell) or reconsider numbering the cards in such a way that us crazy borderline OCD types don't feel bothered by collection gaps.

I also have a suspicion there will be a digital version of this some day. Which will still probably drive you crazy by upselling "cards," but hopefully it'll be way cheaper if all you want to do is make mixes and not play a physical card game.

Man, I just dropped in to listen to that Anderson Paak mix again.

I sort of forgot that this thread existed. My Dropmix is in its box up high in my closet. It looks down at me sometimes with resentment for leaving it up there for so long.

Me too. I guess everybody. It's been over a year since the last cards release, so I did a search, and verified that they don't plan to discontinue the app but they also don't plan to release any more cards. So... enjoy it while the music is still close to current I guess.

Hopefully the awesome tech is more popular in Fuser, whenever that is available!
