God of War (PS4): Kratos and the Dad-feels

Pages

I didn't see a thread here, so I thought I would make one for when the reviews hit this week.

I will be picking it up because it just looks like too much fun to pass up but I will be happy to see reviews before I do.

It looks incredible. I've managed to skip all the latest trailers. I hope the combat feels as good as it looks, think I'll play on hard for a good challenge. Roll on the release!

My only disappointment so far is the release date. I am traveling abroad next week, so I won't be able to play it until the second week of May. Woe is me!

I have been very excited by everything I've see of this so far. I enjoyed the old GoW games up until 3, but it is certainly time for a tonal shift of some kind. Fingers crossed it turns out as well as the early impressions have suggested.

Apparently the game is super easy to spoil so be careful when watching reviews, etc. Here's a very careful, spoiler free review

I think he likes it.

I tend to trust Easy Allies to not give spoilers so I am posting this review.

God of War (PS4) - Easy Allies Review

Review scores are up and look pretty universally positive. I'm into lockdown mode until release, so see ya!

*Just finished watching this one. Minor spoilers of locations but no story or boss fight spoilers

I love the hyperbola in this title

God Of War: 6 Things We Love - Kotaku

This is a bit spoilery about mechanics but not story. Still I have limited gametime so I like to watch this so I can get the most out of my limited time.

God Of War - 11 Things We Wish We Knew Before We Played

I'm spoiling everything. Kratos gets mad and kills everyone.

I will say this - if he kills his son at the end I will be done with the series. I didn't like it in the original games and I don't want to spend a bunch of time developing this father son bond to have him rage out and kill his family again.

All the stellar reviews and buzz are making me want to try, but the same thing happened for the original game and I thought it was one of the most overrated games of its decade.

Curious to hear if anyone here strongly disliked the series but enjoys the new version.

Those review scores makes me move this from a game I'll play at some point, to something I might buy day 1.
I mostly liked the old games - I was terrible at them, and the quick time events deserve a special place in hell, but there was something great about the epic scale and over the top action.

Something I found comforting

Here are the details straight from the team's latest blog post:

Give Me A Story: lets you experience the story without too much of a difficult gameplay challenge. You won’t be taking a gondola to the top of the highest peaks in all the Norse Realms, but you will have a far greater margin for error in enemy encounters.

Give Me A Balanced Experience: is the mode we’d recommend most players start with. The name says it all. We’ve tuned it to deliver a balanced, challenging playthrough.

Give Me A Challenge: is harder and less forgiving. It is recommended for players who find action games extremely intuitive, and for confident long-time God of War series veterans who’ve beat past games on harder difficulties.

Give Me God of War: is the sort of thing reserved for people who wrestle polar bears in their undies. Maybe not quite that, but it’s the most difficult mode in the game. We haven’t just made you weaker or enemies stronger; we’ve looked at enemy behaviors and placements in encounters as well, tweaking everything to make it as threatening as possible. Best of all, you cannot change difficulties once you start a game on this mode, so if you suddenly realize you’re in way over your head, you’ll have to start a new game. Don’t be sorry, be better?

Most reviews that I have seen about this game are AWESOME and given my situation -and that of many more here- I will be focusing my limited time on games that highly interest me and that give me the most funfactor and enjoyability. Now... The God of war series is one of those that i had left behind... I might look into it with this game.

I got a lend of a book on Norse Mythology, my goal is to finish it before GOW releases on the 20th April, I'm hoping it will heighten my appreciation to all the Nordic references, bits of backstory etc in GOW.

Its so great that the reviews have been ridiculously good across the board. The ign & destructoid reviews made it sound particularly glorious.

Oh my god! Kratos is Teal'c! Inever really put it together until I saw a review that mentioned it but now I can hear it so easily.

Why can't Jack, Sam, and Daniel join him?

*I would skip this one since it spoils more locations, monsters and game mechanics than any review I have see so far. Still there are not story spoilers so I watched and am happy I did.

Oh wow. Nice find. A little piece of Stargate SG-1 in God of War.

He hasn't always been the stargate actor. The first two games he was played by played by another black actor from the show 227 but he is more of a stage actor. Their natural voices are very close.

Spotted and wishlisted just last week... Neil Gaiman released Norse Mythology last year, a book in which he retells the classics... Looks good if you fancied more.

Too bad you probably can't read Peter Madsen's brilliant comics from the 80's and 90's. Those are the entry point for most kids into the norse mythology in Denmark. I don't think they got translated. The film maybe. Gaiman is probably a good entry point as well.

Yep that's the exact book I got, its started really well too, paints a really good picture.

Be nice to be able get to points in the game were I know the history or characteristics of god's, giant's or monsters that are mentioned in the book.

Nice one.

Cool, our local library has one in stock, reserved.

Kratos certainly has the moves

Never played a GoW game, but all the buzz and positive reviews got me. Been pretty exclusively playing PC games for quite a while (since zero dawn). Traded in the old PS4 for a GoW PS4Pro preorder. Guess I’m just a sucker for they hype, but surely all the reviews can’t be wrong.

Picked up the Stone Mason edition well because, you know it's Kratos.

Tonight my wife saw a GoW commercial and said "OMG that would look amazing on our big screen TV!". I then proceeded to tell her we would have to spend $400 on the GoW bundle since we don't own a PS4. The dream ended then and there

This is actually the first game in which Kratos wasn't voiced by Terrence Connor Carson. For reference, this is Carson:
