2018 MLB Season Catch-All

Do the Brewers and Cardinals play anything other that close, extra inning games against each other? Holy crap this has been a crazy start to the year.

Finally a good ending to boot!

Didn’t have sound, why didn’t they overturn the trapped catch in the 10th?

Funny, I did not have sound on either, as I was watching and listening to a stream on my phone. I was half paying attention and just trying to stay awake at that point. Thought it was a straight catch.

I'm essentially boycotting the Rays this year because of their bs Longoria trade.

Sadly, I see both Florida teams leaving the state eventually. There doesn't seem to be enough sustained interest in the sport. I'm surprised baseball does so poorly there, but it seems both teams have struggled there long enough, even after success, that I'm not sure there is a fix.

As far as TB they actually used to have high tv ratings and viewership. A big issue is the stadium itself (it is so so so bad) and the location. The city of St. Petersburg has been blocking the team trying to move closer to Tampa for years. If they do leave they will absolutely blame it on the city and they would be right. Trying to get to downtown St.Pete in the late afternoon early evening from Tampa or the outlying areas is a nightmare. There is zero public transit like in other urban style areas with teams.

TB has a stadium deal in the works for a site in Ybor City. It's no done deal but they have private funding, which is a plus. They also just secured a huge TV deal because the ratings are still there (regularly in top half of MLB tv ratings), which is another bonus on affording the new stadium.

Is it time for Yankee fans to panic?

Looks at calendar...sees it is Mid-April...

I was kidding. Spend 5 minutes listening to NYC radio and the sky is falling. And Stanton needs to be traded asap.

I’m gonna be honest, after he decided cities like SF and StL were just not good enough to consider, I hope his entire time in NY is miserable as hell for him.

Oh, I figured! Pretty much why I have stopped listening to any sports talk stuff, unless it is a podcast or interview with an analytics person. Everything is in the moment worst or best.

That said, Yankees are welcome to give up and quit now. Perfectly fine with that.

Sean Manaea of the A's no-hits the Red Sox.

Of all teams to no-hit, the one that had only lost two games at that point. Even more impressive.

We are an impatient, hysterical lot. The radio is enjoyable if you want to hear "Vinny from Bayside" call in and confirm every stereotype of Yankees fans you've ever heard.

That said, lookit that! 8 straight, and they're suddenly 17-9! The bats are bludgeoning the bejeezus out of everything, I am VERY excited about Gleyber Torres and I'm still 75% sure we don't have the pitching to go deep in the postseason.

I say this a lifelong and forever Twins fan. They are f*cking terrible.

Cincinnati fans laugh at your definition of f*ng terrible.

At this point, I am glad they prevented the Brewers from signing Lance Lynn and giving up a future pick for a one year rental. His velocity is good but seemed to suffer from the lack of spring training. He may still come around. They are fortunate to only be 7 under.

What is their farm system like? I saw Romero had a heck of a debut a few days ago.

Not great. As a franchise we’ve never really capitalized on any prospects we’ve had.

They won two World Series led by the drafted and developed Kirby Puckett. I would say that they have capitalized more than never!

--slinks back to fondly recall the 1982 World Series that the Brewers LOST--

The fastest pitch so far of the season hit a batter. And it’s the fastest to hit a batter since pitch speed tracking.

Pretty embarrassing. After a historic start, not a lot going right for the Mets lately.

Might have cost them the game.

Is this funny/tragic if you follow the Orioles?

Orioles starting pitching is and has been terrible for 20+ years.

Phew, we picked up Joey Bats. Post season here we come!

Astros killed it again tonight. What an amazing team we have right now.

Check out the Cards' Jordan Hicks throwing 104mph sinkers and 105mph heat.

The circumstances make it extra spicy - two outs, bottom 9th, and the batter (Odubel Herrera) had an on-base streak of 45 consecutive games on the line.

Spoiler: 104mph in the dirt, batter struck out but reached first anyway. Apparently MLB ruled that his streak was broken. I guess because he's considered to have reached base on an error?

Dropped third strikes get marked as a strikeout for the batter and a wild pitch for the pitcher. So you're right, the batter doesn't get credit for being on base because it was an error (wild pitch). Basically, the at-bat counts only as a strikeout for the batter.

Yeah, figured as much - though if the streak is "on-base", it's hard to argue with the Phils maintaining that it's intact. (They tweaked their wording but they're still keeping count.)

No skin off my nose either way - the Cards won

Hicks is a hell of a talent. The craziest part is how much movement he gets at that speed.

Even worse than the dropped third strike was the tipped pitch that skipped into Yadier Molina’s groin and required surgery.

The fact that he is under 9K/9 innings and at 6.5BB/9 with a high WHIP is concerning. Fan Graphs had a good article on him a couple days ago HERE. At 21, he has time to develop better command and a second pitch, but the Cards need anything resembling a capable arm in the bullpen currently, which means he will have to learn at the hardest level. If he does, that will be quite a weapon.
