3D Printers/Printing CATCH ALL

Finished the print!

That is pretty scary TBH.

Thanks!
I guess that's the point?
Works as a filter mask too, so I can wear it out.

Got my first finger cut. Didn't know it happen until all the blood started spewing. Exacto knives are sharp.

I think I made another mistake. I didn't put the printer on a battery backup. Now there is a thunderstorm and I have 9 more hours to go on my current print.

On other news I bought some ABS spools by mistake but prints are coming out good. I also got that knife someone suggested for scrapping prints off the bed. The suggested knife was just a re branded painters knife so I bought a set of those that included the knife which was cheaper than buying the single scrapper knife. Works pretty good.

I've yet to print with ABS, only PLA and PETG here. I want to give ABS a try at some point.

My Tornado and the Octopi are on my main UPS. When I had Dorkmanship's CR-10S here, it was just plugged into the outlet. It lost power once and I didn't realize it had a resume function after it lost power. I turned it back on expecting to have to start it over and the thing just picked up where it left off. Awesome!

Sorry to hear about the cut. My friend cut himself with one of the scraper tools pretty badly.

My brother has been here for a couple months and we've been printing a ton of stuff for him to reskin some board games. I probably mentioned it above. I decided to give him the Monoprice Select Mini V2 that my friend gave me a while ago. I have to teach him how to use it and all about 3D printing in the next week. Up until now, I've just been cranking out the prints for him.

I'm trying so hard not to get a resin printer. The Elegoo Saturn preorder happens this weekend. I'm going to try to get one at the "first 200" level. We'll see.

Does anyone here have a laser cutter?

It needs some more clean up but I thought it came out pretty well for my first 3D printed larger figure that had to be assembled.

The box title is apt

I don’t but have used the one at the local Library. Would be cool to have one to make laser-cut storage solutions for my board games.

Gotta agree with ya there. Good job.

I sometime use some E-6000 glue to fill in the spots that don’t print well like on the top of that wing.

I replaced the hot end on my Prusa MK3s. It was not that bad and the software did a calibration afterwards and the first prints have come out great!

Good to hear. Why did end up replacing the hot end? Something wear out?

I got a blob that ended up breaking the thermistor cable when I pulled it off. The thermistor was heat welded into the block so I could not get it out so had to replace the whole hot end.

I went to my local bike store tonight to pick up a replacement inner tube for my son's mountain bike. I wanted to support our local shops rather than just buy something on Amazon. Of course, when I got home, I discovered that the tubes had Presta valves but his rim has openings for the larger Schrader valves (totally slipped my mind to check or ask). Not wanting to go back to the store, I did some research and found that you can get grommets that convert a Schrader-sized hole into one fit for a Presta valve. Of course, they were all pretty expensive compared to what you could manufacture them for....hmmm...

A quick search on Thingiverse revealed:

... and 15 minutes later, I was fitting a 10mm tall PLA Presta to Schrader valve adapter into his bike wheel. Win!

I am getting ads for the Snapmaker 2.0 and it looks like it has a laser cutter module attachment. I am mostly looking for something I can use to cut out leather pieces for leather work I do. Anyone have any experience with this machine?

I've only watched videos of it. Multifunction machines always worry me. If they have a good track record and there is a real big user base out there for support help, it could be a good buy.

Yeah. Kind of where I am. Plus, the 5"x 5" working surface is barely utile. I think I might need to DIY one when I am ready.

One of my mates has a preorder in for the Snapmaker with the laser cutter (as opposed to the laser etcher) module.

The thing that absolutely terrifies me about that is its a class 4 laser with NO laser safe case or interlocks.
If you do decide to get one, put a dark laser safe box around it, ideally with a power cut interlock on the door. If you can't do that please please please store it somewhere no one will go while it is working (preferably lockable) and never go anywhere near it without laser safe goggles.

The reflections from a class 4 laser can cause permenant eye damage from over 2m away! Be safe!

If you have a roll+ of PLA to use, this looks pretty cool:

3D Printed 3D Scanner

I’m having issues with my Tornado right now or I’d give it a shot. My brother bought a lot of PLA that he had to leave here when he shipped out.

I missed this before. That is awesome. 3D Printing FTW!

I have a project for someone in possession of a 3d printer and the skills to do something relatively simple. I am willing to trade work. PM me if interested.

I don't think mass 3D printing shivgees is allowed in the terms of service...

If mine was working better, I'd volunteer. I'm having issues once the print gets about 3mm tall. It starts underextruding, then gets better after a couple mm then underextrudes again, etc.

And once in a while, it prints perfectly.

On a lark, I decided to print something in PETG tonight. We'll see how it goes.

Well I had a good day with my printer.....While printing the filament decided to come out under the rear idler in the extruder....

4 hours into a 14 hour print *sigh* Could have been worse, could have been at hour 10

I managed to salvage the hardware (print of course is a write off), no lasting damage, but this is the second time this has happened on a long print since I swapped to an E3D v6 nozzle and went from 3mm filament to 1.5mm filament

Having a quick google suggests that because there is a reasonable gap between the wheels and the nozzle entry point if the filament gets flexible (say if the extruder gets warm after working for a while due to heat transfer from an all metal hot end) then it can escape to the side.....ah damn....

Wow, I never would have thought it could do that. That sucks, sorry.

I, of course, want a resin printer, but can't justify it. The only things I think I would want to print for myself are miniatures for RPGs. I already have hundreds of minis, do I really need more? (that was rhetorical, of course I do).

The resin printers are getting bigger build plates, better resolution on the prints, and cheaper. I know I will lose my resolve at some point and get one.

I'm borrowing my friend's Anycubic Photon resin printer right now. Maybe after having it for a bit, I'll realize that it's just something that will sit around and not get much use. Well, that hasn't happened, yet! I'm printing some minis for a friend and some star wars stuff for another friend. It's been printing almost endlessly.

The post-printing effort with the cleanup, etc., is a slight deterrent, though.

Below are pics of what I've printed so far. None of the models (except maybe the the H-Hills) are that detailed, so these don't really show off what a resin printer can do. I haven't been doing a good job of cleaning them up, either. I'm impressed with the printer, regardless. And this is an entry level printer.

Fun stuff!

Hello all, I'm interested in joining the realm of the 3D printers. I'm thinking about a Monoprice Voxel but wanted to check in with existing users to see what their thoughts were. Since I'm fairly new, I'm probably going to stay below $500 unless someone can really sell me on something more expensive. Any suggestions? I will probably start with minis but want something I can also use to print parts for whatever else I'm working on as needed.

What are you interested in printing now and in the future? If you ever plan on printing larger stuff like masks or helmets etc you will quickly tire of having to slice prints, glue them together in such a way that does not create extra work and cleaning up those cuts.

I have a Prusa i2 mk3 and the bed is of a size (25 x 21 x 21 cm | 9.84 x 8.3 x 8.3 in) where I still had to print this Bo Katan I'm working into 4 parts. But it gives me a lot more options on where to slice the object up.

It looks like the voxel has auto leveling which I think is really important with current printers.
