External Harddrive In A PS4

Wasn’t sure if this should go in the main forum, or in th tech help forum.

Anyway, so how does the external harddrive work in a PS4? I’ve heard that you can’t play games off of an external drive- so, what’s the purpose? Is it just to love save files, etc for games your not actively playing? Would love to hear how much data you can move to it, if you can’t actually move the full install files over to play off of them?

Also is there still the limitation of 2TB being the largest external you can use for PS4?

I am running into the walk on my 1 TB internal drive. With the Burnout announcement I feel like it might be time to consider an external drive.

Thanks,

Full games can be installed and played from an external. Any will work. Maximum size the PS4 can utilize is an 8TB drive.

I'm certain that was a typo. It should be TB.

Thanks for the responses.

Looking at customer questions and feedback, it looks like this is a great deal but maybe won’t work on PS4 (https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Exter...). Any idea why it might not work? Specifically, is there anything in the product description that should be a clue that I doesn’t work (so that I can be aware when looking at other brands/models)?

Thanks,

This is a slightly different type of external drive as it has USB ports as well and thus a chipset for the USB ports. I guess that messes things under the PS4. I have the 8TB version and it works just fine with my Xbox One X.

I have no idea what you're talking about... what typo? *whistles nonchalantly*

Also, in terms of recommendations, You'd be better off going with something like this or this. They don't have a 6TB like what you listed earlier, but honestly you probably don't need something that big anyway unless you are buying a lot of games digitally. I have quite a few digital games on my 4TB drive and it's not even a quarter full I think. Plus these ones are both USB powered, so you don't need to plug them into an outlet for it to work.

Indeed, it is 8TB and you will be prompted to reformat once it's attached.

Thanks so much for the help, peeps. I don't have time to peruse the site anymore but it's nice to know there is a place I can stop in for help.
