Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Pages

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is due out in just over a month. I'm still waffling over whether or not to get it and when. I'm disappointed that Studio Ghibli isn't involved with this one, and the consequent change in art style for the world is something I'm not a fan of. However, it looks like the combat may have been improved, and there are kingdom management elements being added that sound promising.

Here's a recent look at the combat:

The first one was lovely but I fell off around 20 hours or so. It ended up being too grindy for me which was a bummer, I loved being in that world.

I really loved the first one, and am really excited for this. If only it was coming to the Switch!

...

I kid, I kid. I think I'll be in day one for this, if not soon after. I still have FFXII to finish.

Will have to wait for reviews. Liked plenty of things about first game, but combat was not good.

Faved.

Watching a video or two, you can still see the Ghibli influence in there for some, but some off on a different style tangent completely, wait and see if it meshes or clashes I guess. An artist and a composer from the first still involved? Something like that.

It's the real time action combat and maybe even more so the kingdom builder side of the game that's got me keen to give it a chance. Migth be willing to sacrifice a bit of pretty for better gameplay.

I gave the first game a couple tries, but yeah as beautiful a game as it was it was a bit dull, combat especially.

I'm playing Ever Oasis on 3ds at the moment, party based action RPG with oasis settlement creation and management on the side. I'm enjoying it and am imagining this might be a far grander, more complex version of that with PS4 Ghibli inspired visuals.

So yeah I'm keener for this than I was before just learning a bit more today.

I want. Level-5 brings the charm so I'm in, even if the combat is sure to be boring after a few hours.

I liked the look of the combat recently so I may actually be in this time.

Honestly, I'd be more excited by a remaster or Switch port of the original. It's one I really strongly regret not putting more time into. I didn't dislike the combat the way others seem to have.

Same here. I fell off the first one after about 40 hours because the unsatisfying combat was so frequent.

I loved pretty much everything else about the first game, so here's hoping not much will be lost without Ghibli in the mix.

I'm in, can't wait!

I'm holding off on buying for about a year just to see if a Switch port materializes. Level-5 is just now getting on board with Switch in Japan so it's not going to happen immediately. Which is fine because I still need to go back to the original and get past the early parts.

Loved the first one. I didn't find it grindy per se, just longer than it probably should have been. Also it made me sad that there wasn't much Ghibli animation beyond the first handful of hours.

Here's the first 18 minutes if you want to feel the hype!!!

Or spoil yourself.

Well, both, technically.

Looks like it starts a bit quicker than the first one. It was what, an hour before you really started "playing" the game in the original? I really gotta watch a story play though of the original if I'm gonna sucker myself into this series again.

Yeah, the intro bit where you run around the town is a drag in the original.

So I basically assumed I wouldn't be getting Ni No Kuni II until I looked upon my schedule and saw that there really isn't much for me in March and April (especially April), and seeing the combat system had me thinking this might not be a bad choice.

But now I watch this video and it's a 50/50 whether I'll find it all deliciously crunchy or it'll sog my cheerios.

If only this game was coming out on the Switch.. looks like it might be interesting.

I have seen some Ghibli filims.. not as knowledgeable as you guys but... excuse my ignorance... how come ou say the ARt syle is not the same? Looks pretty the same to the 1st one to me.. and why... was Studio Ghibli not involved in this one?

I think it's more that it looks like Level-5 animation more than Ghibli. Level-5 has many shows that share similar animation techniques so they look similar. This more or less looks like Layton/Yokai Watch (the show) to my eyes. Dark outlines on characters, bright colors, similar aesthetics regarding monsters/familiars.

Now how much of that is simply Level-5 "borrowing" inspiration from Ghibli is up to interpretation. Personally I love Level-5 stuff and I'm excited about this game, regardless of how much they've copied Ghibli over the years.

Agreed--- and yes... I AM VERY much looking forward to this game

Ghibli did animated sequences for the first game, but they haven't done any this time. That's the main difference between the games.

The most important part is Joe Hisaishi is doing g the music again, which means the game will feel like a Ghibli production.

To my eyes it's in the environments moreso than the character design, hopefully they sit well, here and there they haven't in the few vids have seen... but yeah I like Level-5 (Yo-kai > Pokémon) so up for it regardless.

Preach.

My anticipation is growing for this. I never got to play the first one, it being on PS3, and I'd love to play a game with this stunning Studio Ghibli art style. The new combat with lots of little Higgledy's running around (although you's think I'd be into that) but it sounds, from what I hear, like the combat is good.

Please, let this game be my sort of thing!

I'm in the same boat, I wish they'd released the original on the PS4 store, but judging by what people say on the end grind, maybe it'd be better off just missing it.

There are a lot of good parts about the original, but it's a fairly slow pace and combat is shallow. Those are both typical of Level-5 as they design their games mostly for all ages.

If you do play the original, on PSNow or however, put it on easy to cut down on any grind. The story and world are worth experiencing imho, even if I never did finish it!

I really enjoyed the original to the end, didn't mind the combat at all.

I really enjoyed the first one except for the very clearly bolted on section at the end. Still, I am looking forward to the sequel...even though I have read that the combat is comparable to Tales.

Same. Beautiful game but I couldn't stick with it.
