The GWJ CRPG Club - Game 1: Shadowrun Dragonfall DC (Over)

Cleared another side mission from Returns. Something about looking for a Scientist going by the name of Saada. Found him after an interesting scuffle. Let him run free.

I think, perhaps hope, I'm closing in on the credits. The combat is enjoyable. The story and narrative, not as much. Less interesting characters and companions. I am at least finding some worth in playing as a Shaman, to a degree.

Getting your credits doesn't take long, I just got mine

Spoiler:

after making a giant building explode. I took one more side mission fors some cash where I had to go into an office building and get information about a prototype. I experienced my first full team wipe one encounter from what I assume was the exit!

Cool! Just to confirm, you're all done with Dragonfall and I should add your name to the completed list?

No, all that has happened is I died LOL. I imagine I still have a fair way to go.

Ah! You got credits because you died! Lol, I'm slow today.

I may be the slow one, I thought we were talking about the 50,000 credits to get the information from Alice

Ha! Excellent. Must've been a stray Mind Wipe spell.

Some quick Dragonfall statistics now that we've crossed the halfway mark.

As of March 31
Players starting Dragonfall: 33
Players completing Dragonfall: 16
Percentage finishing: 48.5%

48.5% is much higher than I anticipated. Great work everyone! If we get even one more finisher in the next three months we'll cross 50%.

I've actually found time to get back to it over the past two weeks and I'm five missions in. If no one else does it before, I'm hoping to get you over that hump. 3 months...should be doable

Awesome! Good luck with it. Plenty of recent finishers around if you want tips or ideas as well.

I'm also closing in on that ending. Should finish it this week if I can find the time

I've finally built a new gaming machine, so I can leave poor sometimesdee's gaming desktop alone.

I assume I could have ported over my saves, but didn't feel like it. I had decided I needed to finish the trilogy in order at some point, and was doing fairly well with a Shaman on my first attempt. But then after I got some money I spent it all on my character, forgetting that I would need to hire another team. Maybe I could have figured out how to move on solo until I had money again, but I lost interest in doing so and hadn't continued for awhile.

So now I'm starting Returns again. I have noticed that the player character tends to be a damage magnet no matter what, so is best off being at least a little tanky. So I'm going to try to be full-on tanky, and all points are being spent in body/quickness/dodge/rifle for now. I'll probaly add biotech to that at some point, and maybe eventually some charisma for more conversation options. But for now I don't mind the idea of shooting my way through everything.

I was also pleasantly surprised that not only did Returns work with 21:9 monitor pretty flawlessly, it ended up looking much better for it.

Alright, count me in. I started playing Pillars of Eternity yesterday, then decided to go back and power through Dragonfall before the time quarter ends.

Welcome welcome! Great to have another aboard.

I was surprised at how quickly I made it through the game, on the whole, playing about an hour or so per day. So yeah, plenty of time left.

Woot, just finished Shadowrun: Dragonfall DC, what a game

Spoiler:

even if I did end the world.

Time to install PoE.

Sometimes games just grab me and I play them more than I should LOL. In fact this one grabbed me so hard I am starting a Shadowrun Pen & Paper campaign next weekend.

I enjoyed Hong Kong and the extra content from that game too.

Having moved to a new machine, I restarted Returns, and I was having quite a lot of fun shooting through the game. Early on I dumped everything into body/quickness/ranged combat/rifle/dodge, and that helped me a lot with getting through fights.

Then when I fired it up all of the saves I had made on my new machine were gone, just leaving saved games from the old machine. I found a few similar complaints online, and I found the location of all of my new saves as well as the location of the old cloud-saves ... but no matter where I copied the new saves it seemed they wouldn't show up for me. Presumably I could keep digging until i work it out, but I have better ways to spend my time, so I'll fire up a new Dragonfall game to see if I can finally get a completion marked. I think I'll try the rifle specialist again ... it really seems like the player character is 'supposed' to be a decker, but I think I enjoyed the power of the rifle too much give it up now.

I've been playing through as an Elven Decker. I created the character with melee skills and a machete, but that didn't feel right at all, so I switched over to pistol specialization (and shotgun for close range) and have been having a much better time.

I tried an Elven decker with a pistol at first before I took a break, but it seemed like I didn't have enough Karma points early on to make her at all useful in combat. Though it may have been because I tweaked the Decker archetype instead of starting over from scratch. Have you seen a similar issue at all? If so, how did you fix it?

No, it's not a great start. After the first couple of runs, I got enough karma to bump my pistol skills up into the 3-4 range, which helped. Still not great, but capable of doing damage. I also put one point into shotguns and carry one of those for super-close quarters battle -- it seems like those get high hit% and pretty high damage fairly quickly, at the cost of only a few shots per reload, and very little range.

If anyone still wants to get in on this, GOG currently has Shadowrun Dragonfall for $3, or $11 for all the Shadowrun games

Good to know, thanks for posting this. That's a sweet deal for the three games.

I've taken so long trying to get back to this that I've started again from scratch and have gone with an Elf Decker this time.

I wonder if I can finish by June 30 and so achieve GWJCRPG lvl one!

Wish me luck.

You can do it!

Awesome, good luck Bubble!

Cheers. This time just dove straight in rather than spend well over 3 hours in character creation... So I've got further in the actual game already!

Yeah this game system is brutal in terms of forcing a give and take in terms of character build. So many interesting options...

I think I may shelve Returns. Dragonfall was awesome, aided by striking gold with a Physical Adept protagonist. I thoroughly enjoyed the character class. Returns is less awesome, and hindered by my choice of a Shaman protagonist. It is not a class I would opt for again. Decent support. Boring lead.

Too much else to play to restart now. I will return to it with a fresh class, in time.

Thank goodness I started with Dragonfall. It was brilliant.

I enjoyed playing a Shaman in Returns, but I think I tend to gravitate towards support/summoning characters in RPGs in general. Especially in party-based games like this, since I'm controlling everyone, I don't think of my player character as being distinct from the rest of the party in battles.
