The GWJ CRPG Club - Game 4 Underway!

That was more than I knew. Thanks

I feel like nominating Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines every time until it's selected, but instead, I will nominate The Bard's Tale.

Me, too. Well, that and Baldur's Gate.

Have you played Vampire before?

I made a start once, but didn't get too far. I have no answer as to why that was.

I've played through Vampire several times, and I love it. I didn't make it far as a nosferatu, so I think I would try that next time around. Although, I can't help but think that class misses out on a lot of fun stuff. I wouldn't recommend that as a first play through.

Legit game. You should go and nominate it if you want. I chose the crazy bloodlines. So much fun

I can't now! I nominated The Bard's Tale. But I would second Vampire.

I'm looking forward to Game 2!

Even if the nominating and seconding goes quiet, we'll let it run its course until the March 20 end. Plenty of time to look through IGN's (probably controversial) list of the Best 100 RPGs of All-Time and nominate something.

That is just crazy. Everyone should post their own top 100 to so we can cleanse the filthy wrongness.
(actually, don't)

I'll nominate Icewind Dale.

News Flashes...

1. Baldur's Gate EE The Complete Saga just went on a 48-hour sale on Fanatical for 80% off, so $10.79 for 1, 2, and Siege of Dragonspear.

2. Planescape Torment EE also just went on sale for $6.79. You can save an additional 10% with the code SPRING10 for this title.

This is more evidence that Fanatical closely monitors our GWJ CRPG thread and bases sales on what we talk about. Keep up the good work everyone.

I'd like to second Icewind Dale.

Those are all great purchases to grab and sock away for next time while we all vote to play the Pillars of Eternity copies we all picked up in the last sale.

Fine. I bought them both.

I do need Planescape Torment EE! I've the original on disc, but I love these remasters, or enhanced editions, for their ease of access. Yes, a purchase is fitting. *enabled*

I have the Baldur's Gate: EE titles direct from Beamdog. That's a crazy good price right there, though.

Nice!

Was the Baldur’s Gate The Complete Saga one key for the whole set or individual keys for each of the parts? I was thinking to get The Baldur’s Gate deal just for Siege of Dragonspear, and figuring I could give away the other keys. But if it’s just one key then I might wait for some kind of a sale just on Siege.

I did pick up the Planescape deal in any case, in case that one wins sometime soon.

Remember I said I didn't want to vote...

Glancing through that IGN list (putting aside how weirdly off it is) something did stand out to me - I've never tried an Ultima game, VII apparently being the best.

So if Wasteland 2 doesn't win, that might be an alternative I'd like to try and chuck in the mix...

Nominating Ultima VII: The Black Gate.

£4ish on GoG and bonus it'll run on dozen year old MacBook have just dug out so could play on the sofa...

I'll second Ultima VII. I was thinking of nominating the actual best of the series, U5, but 7 will do.

Been a long time since I was in Britannia, would be nice to go back and visit.

Every computer I’ve owned since Ultima VII came out has had it installed. My current system has Exult, both games, and the Roland sound pack all ready to go.

I would KILL for remasters of Black Gate and Serpent Isle. Not 3D, just super high-resolution 2D art with a modern top-down engine. I would also love to see the classic Ultima games ported over to Switch if that’s even possible. I’m thinking portable mode would be the perfect way to play those games.

I got Ultima IV from GOG for free at some point, and it's just been sitting in my library. I was never sure if I needed to play the earlier games, or if they're all standalone. I've never played any in the series.

I'll admit my choice of 7 was an uninformed one - That IGN top 100 being my guide

I recall almost winning a bid for Ultima IV on Sega Master System, some time ago. For a useless factoid!

VII is a good one. It is hard for me to tease apart the impact it had on me for the changes it made to the world after playing 4-6 (all the ones in Britannia proper). Lots of time had passed and things had changed in the world, which was cool, but also semi-dismaying because not all the changes were positive.

I loved U5 because the world felt huge and expansive, esp. compared to U4, which was a good game but I think it gets more credit than it deserves in the gaming zeitgeist (also, because of that, it overshadows U5, which is a strike against it to me ).

U6 was interesting but is held back by early experiments in how to use a mouse. I don't think it holds up after trying to play it a couple years ago when it came out on GoG. The story it is telling is pretty good but the UI and interactions with the world drove me crazy(er).

Good thing they stopped making Ultimas on a high note with U7.

Can I make a strong pitch for Pillars of Eternity? The sequel is coming out in May and from what I’ve read some of your choices will carry over to the next game.

Bubblefuzz and tboon - I've put Ultima 7 down for the moment, but feel free to change it based on your conversation.

And it looks like that Baldur's Gate Bundle on Fanatical ended early. Perhaps they have limited amounts of keys available or something for these 48-hour sales they are running.

Last 24 hours of nominating and seconding. Voting will start tomorrow!

Not a bad pile to have though.

Yeah, the whole "Cool! I can reduce my pile" thought behind this idea isn't working well for me. Most of our nominations I already have, but I've picked up Vampire, Planescape and Tyranny since we've started this, when they went on sale.

Pile reduction has never been one of my strongpoints or concerns, though, and I'm super happy that I knocked two RPGs off (Dragonfall and Hongkong).

Picked up planescape on the sale here, I’ve thought of buying it for a while having never played it and always hearing great things. Plus I got Torment- Tides on the humble bundle recently.

As tempted as I am to nominate this The Bard's Tale with IV on the horizon, I'm going to zag over to Icewind Dale 2 to scratch that 3e itch.

Quick update, with current prices, How Long to Beat Main Game estimates, and known current sale prices.

Voting is going to be tough for me. I'd happily play any of these, and five of them I'd really like to play. Narrowing down to three votes will take some thought.

Will stick with U7, for the fancier early 90's graphics

That $5.99 is complete edition, so also gets you Ultima 7 part 2 Serpent Isle by the looks... Another 68+ hours according to HLTB for the speedier crpgwjer
