The Quarterly JRPG Club 2.0

Pages

Hello!

With the encouragement of Damnable Bear, I'm volunteering to continue the Quarterly JRPG Club. Big thanks to DB for the work he did in running the club over the past couple years! I've started a new thread and am calling this 2.0 not because I think I can improve upon the previous one but because I couldn't think of anything better.

I took a look at the suggestions that were made a few months ago about how we choose the game and taking those into account came up with the following:

- First, we have one week of nominations. Each member is allowed one nomination. Games nominated must have had their original (so a recent remake can be voted for) western release at least one year ago and not be a game the club has already played.

- Next, we have one week of voting. Each member is allowed three votes, but can only spend one vote per game. However, they do not have to use all three votes. You can vote without having nominated anything!

Current game (Q2 2018): Shin Megami Tensei IV

Previous club thread

Past games:

Atelier Totori (Q1 2016)
Dark Cloud 2 (Q4 2017)
Earthbound (Q1 2017)
Final Fantasy X-2 (Q2 2016)
Final Fantasy XII (Q1 2018)
Final Fantasy XV (Q3 2017)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (Q1 2016 Gaiden)
Persona 3 (Q3 2016)
Suikoden (Q4 2016)
Valkyria Chronicles (Q4 2015)
Valkyria Chronicles 2 (Q4 2015 Gaiden)
World of Final Fantasy (Q2 2017)

Hrm. I'll have to think about what's on my pile that I'd like to give a whirl.

Is there a list anywhere of what's already been played?

I don’t think so, but I was already thinking about putting one together so I’ll go ahead and do that later today.

I’m in. I keep meaning to join this thing.

I can't promise I'll be done with Persona 5 by the time we start, but I'd love to jump in one one of these. I might throw in a vote for a non-Persona Megaten title, or some handheld Dragonquest

Updated the OP with a list of games that have been played. I included the two gaiden picks that I found. Let me know if there was any others that I should include. I saw there was talk of doing Secret of Mana, but I don't believe that ended up happening?

Hi steinkrug, thanks for picking up the mantle!

I'm thinking Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel would be a good nomination since it got plenty of votes in the previous thread (Q4 2017).

Here's my list:

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
Persona 5

Hey brokenclavicle! Thanks for the interest.

So, there’s a few changes in how we’re going about choosing a game detailed in the OP based on discussion in the old thread. At least pending any objections from the community.

Ah! I have been a filthy skimmer hahaha

Here goes the nomination, then:

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

no problem. I tried to avoid a wall of text but I may have failed in that.

This is like when a father sees his son succeed his life's work and a single tear rolls down the father's eye. Except steinkrug and I aren't related.

Yet.

I'd like to nominate The Secret of Mana.

SNES version? The remake is releasing in February.

I already know I'm getting a SNES Classic for Christmas so I'm all on board for an excuse to replay Secret of Mana, even if I'm just gonna play it again in February. I also think it's closer to the 20-30 hour range than 40-50, which is quite convenient.

LOL!

So I’m happy to see interest and some nominations coming in. I’ll take that as people being okay with the format changes? If that’s the case keep the nominations coming.

The SNES version, yes.

Resonance of Fate!

Replaying FF XII and now Xenoblade C2 reminds me how much I missed this genre. I have not nominations but I'm following and in.

I erred on the side of caution when giving some space for discussion of how I had things set up with the game selection format.

Opinions on adjusting these dates?
Nominations 12/24-12/30
Voting 12/31-1/6

Obviously nominations are already happening and that's cool and we could use some more, of course, but do we start voting a bit earlier?

Thanks everyone.

FF XII The Zodiac Age

Well I've only actually played one quarter of all the ones listed but I enjoy the thread and maybe it'll hit a pile game for me again in 2018.

Was there a link to this new thread from the old one? A lot of people only check their recent posts. Slow day at work or I wouldn't have bothered and found this.

Yeah I put a link in the old thread on Damnable Bear’s suggestion.

Nominees so far:

Final Fantasy XII (PS2, PS4)
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (PC, PS3, Vita)
Resonance of Fate (PS3, 360)
Secret of Mana (SNES, Mobile)

And I'll add a nomination for Suikoden II (PSOne). It was on the last list and it's one of those classics I haven't played.

Thanks for organising this.
DIGIMON STORY CYBER SLEUTH (PS4, Vita)

Thanks for taking up the mantle, Steinkrug!

Here's my two cents:
Shadow Hearts (PS2)

Thanks for the thread steinkrug. I’ll try and play along if a pile title wins the quarterly race. No need to nominate this time as the pile jrpg I’d like to vote for is already up...

Current nominees:

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2015; PS4, PSVita)
Final Fantasy XII (2006; PS2, PS4)
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (2015; PC, PS3, PSVita)
Resonance of Fate (2010; PS3, 360)
Secret of Mana (1993; SNES, Mobile)
Shadow Hearts (2001; PS2)
Suikoden II (1999; PSOne)

Nominations will be open through tomorrow, 12/30 and then we’ll kick off voting on New Year’s Eve. Surely to be the highlight of that day for all!

I'll put Tokyo Mirage Sessions (Wii U)

It is, actually!

Well, a highlight, at least. I won't be partying that day so...

As 2018 looms, it's time to vote!

As a reminder, you can vote for up to three games. Your choices for Quarter 1:

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2015; PS4, PSVita)
Final Fantasy XII (2006; PS2, PS4)
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (2015; PC, PS3, PSVita)
Resonance of Fate (2010; PS3, 360)
Secret of Mana (1993; SNES, Mobile)
Shadow Hearts (2001; PS2)
Suikoden II (1999; PSOne)
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (2016; Wii U)

I haven't played any of these (though I own more than half...)!

I would like to vote for Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and Final Fantasy XII
