I’m very much looking forward to the Switch getting the sort of library where publishers don’t think they can get away with inflating the prices for ports. I mean, I’m as big a fan of the Syberia series as anyone, but $30 for a game first released in 2004 (or 2002, in the case of the first one) is kind of obscene.

And since we’re talking about point-and-click adventure games, Odysseus Kosmos and his Robot Quest caught my eye this week. You play as a layabout engineer who suddenly finds himself responsible for the fate of an entire spaceship. It’s a bit like Syberia, but intentionally funny.

Fans of Red Dwarf, rejoice! Odysseus Kosmos and his Robot Quest is my pick for game of the week.

If it weren't the Christmas season I'd be jumping on the opportunity to snag Resident Evil: Revelations Collection on the Switch. I've been a proponent of the first game since I played it on the 3DS, and while it has been re-released on multiple platforms, this is a chance to bundle it with its sequel on the most wonderful hybrid system with my favorite of Pro Controllers. The reason I'm not jumping on it is that I have plenty of items to buy for others, and thus must hope someone instead purchases it for me.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope also re-releases on PS4 this week. I guess someone out there actually enjoyed the game enough to want to play through it again.

My actual pick, however, is going to Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Were it not for the fact that I have a knack for never completing these games, it would be a stronger contender for me than Resident Evil: Revelations Collection. I think this is some of the most gorgeous cel-shading we've ever seen in gaming, the plot looks to be just my kind of anime bullsh*t, and the last Nintendo Direct actually made some sort of sense of the combat. The previews are sounding pretty positive as well. The only downside is that the character design has gone even more "anime" – in that it combines the worst examples of Kingdom Hearts with Senran Kagura. Expect to see some risque figures for sale on Crunchyroll's website in about a year.

The Steam release list is becoming self-aware. Games coming out this week include Yet Another Puzzle Platformer and not one, but two games about opening loot boxes: Box Looter 2018 and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Gambling.

Rabbit mentioned on the conference call how Skyrim was tweaked for VR, to make it feel more like you swing the axe, bash the shield or twang the bow. How have they tweaked Fallout 4 VR? In a similar way, such that combat is fun, but everything else is a drag. It just makes me want to fire up regular Fallout 4 instead.

The gaming historian in me is intrigued when long-dormant IPs get resurrected, which brings me to Black Mirror. It’s not a Telltale version of the chilling, dystopian TV show (“the voters of England will remember that”), but rather a reboot of a cult Czech gothic-horror adventure game from 2003. It’s a reboot, not a remake, so expect a similar story, different puzzles and some tszujing of the art assets. It also happens to be releasing at a time of year when we are all surely feeling dozy from gorging upon the turducken of quality releases this year, such that another stunning open-world timesink feels like one bird too many.

So yeah, I’d slap my bitcoin down for Black Mirror this week.

I only have eyes for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and it isn't even close. Monolith Soft male some of the largest RPGs out there and pack in enough weird metaphysical stuff to transcend the typical JRPG plot. Hopefully this one brings the pacing back from the original XC and not the weird no pace of XCX.

Ooh, Dominions 5 is out this week. Cool.
