[News] Post a Political News Story

Ongoing discussion of the political news of the day. This thread is for 'smaller' stories that don't call for their own thread. If a story blows up, please start a new thread for it.

Democracy is like a finely tuned 19th century factory full of analog weaving machines with all the guts exposed, and Republicans are the wooden shoe manufacturers...

NM I can't encode pictures anymore...

Any time I see something about a judge blocking something I immediately know that it's most likely a F'n conservative judge in Texas.

"Texas judge" is Florida Man with political power.

Ever the champion of small government and businesses alike, DeSantis has announced sweeping criminal and civil investigations of Disney for the high crimes of *checks notes* being a big meanie and making him look like a buffoon in white, thigh-high go-go boots.

Well, he's not just going to sit on his hands. But I'm pretty sure The Mouse has quite a competent regiment of lawyers. They could probably tie this up in the courts until, I dunno, 21 years past the death of King Charles III's last descendant...

I really hope his Inspector General and Commissioner come back with "well, they didn't break any laws, so there's nothing we can do".

Chief of staff of former Maryland Governor (R) was killed in a shootout with the FBI.

Maybe comply with orders next time.

Shootouts between Republicans and cops: whoever loses, we win.

NC Democrat expected to change parties

A North Carolina Democratic lawmaker is expected to flip her party affiliation, multiple Republicans with knowledge of the discussions tell Axios.

The move would cement Republicans' toe-hold in a fast-changing swing state, handing them a veto-proof majority in the middle of the legislative session and a clear runway to enact their agenda despite opposition from Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.

EDIT: She's in a safely blue seat, and is flipping entirely out of spite.

Cotham resented attacks she received following her absence on a gun bill override vote. “People don’t care about the facts,” Cotham told me in a text message last week. “They will say whatever they want, they will be cruel, they are now attacking my family and children.” #ncpol

Ugh. I need to move

Spite. I think that was one of the Founding Fathers basic principles of democracy, right? Don't enjoy the way your voters want you to vote? Screw em!

To be fair, now that your governor's veto has been overridden due partially to your absence, there are probably a lot of other people's family members and children that are going to be attacked, too. But it won't be with words.

He's out of line, but he's not wrong.

Janet Protasiewicz defeats Daniel Kelly for Wisconsin Supreme Court. The result flips ideological control of the court from conservative to liberal, a huge victory for the pro-choice side.

This is arguably the biggest story of the day.

Hope they can un-gerrymander the once great state of WI before it's too late.

between watching some conservatives getting heckled and pushed around by New Yorkers while others freak out over the Chicago and Wisconsin elections, it’s been a pretty entertaining day.

“I don’t see a way to win without rigging it.” FFS.

If anyone isn’t familiar with who Ali Alexander is, btw, he was one of the primary organizers behind J6.
He also thinks cars run on the psychic energy of the driver, not gasoline.

Yeah, I've seen people saying "he's saying the quiet part loud" online, which really isn't correct, because for Ali, there is no quiet part.

I hate to be that guy, but Republican Dan Knodl looks like he's going to win the Wisconsin's State Senate District 8 special election giving Republicans a two thirds supermajority. That means they can impeach whoever the f*ck they want, whenever they want.

Last week Knodl said that he'd "certainly consider" immediately impeaching Protasiewicz as well as other criminal justice officials "who have failed" at their jobs if he won.

"I'll take states that are as f*cked up as Florida for $500 Alex".

"What are Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Indiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and... uh... sh*t I'm losing track!"

Looks like its more than one category of answers...

At least the NJ governor has made the state a haven for trans people and the doctors who perform their care. I take back all the crap I ever said about NJ. You're alright.

I think this trial is going to have a bigger outcome then the current Trump case.

Will be interesting to see who gets thrown under the bus by the Murdochs.

Dominion Voting Systems can force Fox Corporation executives Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch to testify on the witness stand at this month’s scheduled defamation trial, a Delaware judge said Wednesday.

Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis said at a hearing that if Dominion subpoenas the Murdochs to testify in-person, he would not quash those subpoenas, and the Murdochs would need to show up to the courthouse. Dominion has sued Fox News for defamation, and says it was defamed by the right-wing network when Fox hosts and guests claimed in 2020 that its voting systems illegally rigged the election.

“They are relevant to the case… if Dominion wants to bring them live, they need to issue a trial subpoena, and I would not quash it,” Davis said. He added that that “it would be my discretion that they come” to testify in-person at the trial, which is scheduled to begin later this month in Wilmington, Delaware.

Clarence Thomas even more corrupt and dirty then we thought

His failure to report the flights appears to violate a federal disclosure law passed after Watergate, according to experts.

By accepting the trips, Thomas has broken long-standing norms for judges’ conduct, ethics experts and four current or retired federal judges said.

What's a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of undisclosed gifts and trips between friends?

But there is no process for punishing him so ....

Technically, there is. He could be impeached by the House and then convicted and removed by the Senate.

But that will never happen.

(Exactly one Supreme Court Justice has ever even been impeached - Samuel Chase, one of the Founding Fathers and signers of the Declaration - and he was acquitted by the Senate. This was over 200 years ago, mind you, but there is at least some precedent for it...)
