[News] Post a Political News Story

Ongoing discussion of the political news of the day. This thread is for 'smaller' stories that don't call for their own thread. If a story blows up, please start a new thread for it.

I know it's bad for the discovery process that Epstein is dead, but I'm not at all sad that he is no longer walking the earth.

I'm thinking that the Russians didn't do this one. Usually when someone commits suicide in a Russian prison it is by shooting themselves in the head...twice.

Acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Ken Cuccinelli, earlier: "Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge"

Honestly, I respect Richard Spencer, Andrew Anglin, Matthew Heimbach and his ilk more than these people. Those people say what they mean and mean exactly what they say, and don't do this mendacious "I didn't specifically say that!" dance around it.

Same with the Christians who have been ignoring the dozens of obvious statements about how you should treat your neighbor and saying things like "stranger actually means someone who converts so we don't have to help refugees". Yeah, I don't think so. Just admit that you don't want to follow what the scripture actually says.

46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Maybe for "Good Samaritan" we should read "Good immigrant from Guatemala".

James O'Keefe and Project Veritas are back. This time with a trove of Google documents leaked by former YouTube software engineer Zachary Vorhies that they claim shows how Google has embedded a liberal partisan bias into their search algorithms. Vorhies is being positioned a "hero" and the "Google Snowden."

What O'Keefe and Project Veritas haven't quite mentioned is that Vorhies is an "avid an avid promoter of anti-Semitic slanders that banks, the media, and the United States government are controlled by “Zionists”" and that he's also "pushed conspiracy theories like QAnon, Pizzagate, and the discredited claim that vaccines cause autism" on social media as well as.

And, sadly and ironically, there's this bit:

Daily Beast wrote:

YouTube, where Vorhies worked until recently, has been criticized for a video recommendation algorithm that can push users towards more extreme content — and thus towards radicalization and conspiracy theories.

Vorhies himself saw YouTube as a reliable source of evidence for his conspiracy theories, according to one tweet he sent promoting anti-vaccine paranoia. In a January tweet, he urged other Twitter users to look up anti-vaccine information on YouTube.

“Don’t take my word for it—study it for yourself,” Vorhies wrote. “See the testimony of countless parents testifying on social media (e.g. YouTube).”

He constantly finds new ways to make me embarrassed to be an Iowan.

Steve King questions if there would be any population left if not for rape and incest

Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa questioned on Wednesday whether there would be any population left on Earth if not for rape and incest.

"What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape and incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?" he said in Urbandale, Iowa, according to video posted online by the Des Moines Register, which was first to report on the remarks Wednesday.
"Considering all the wars and all the rape and pillage that has taken place ... I know I can't certify that I was not a part of a product of that," King said. "I'd like to think that every one of the lives of us are as precious as any other life," he added.
The remarks came as King was defending not allowing exceptions for abortion in cases of rape or incest.

The f*ck!?!?

I mean, technically he's right if you sincerely believe the planet started with Adam and Eve and went from there.

Except for the part where Cain leaves the garden of Eden and finds a wife who isn't also his sister. Oops.

Isn't saying a crime actually isn't a crime the prelude to getting accused of said crime?

I think this is more of the "no abortion for any exceptions" policy the GOP wants to control women.

But yeah probably guilty of sexual assault somewhere along the way too.

Don't know what the deal is yet but I'm seeing multiple news report pop up about cops being shot in Philadelphia.

...why is the name "Jawn Wick" trending in relation to this story?

Jawn is a Philly* slang word that represents any noun.

*some people will wrongly say it comes from “joint” (NYC) and turned to “jawn” due to the superior Philly accent.

Um. Holy sh*t.

“Bodyguard - Let that go. Seriously. Let that go.

Reporter - Why is it so important? Are you worried about the local cops?

B - Listen, you’re really smart and I’m not going to offer that over the phone right now, okay? You’re really smart. You have no idea. Please!

R - What do you mean by that?

B - I can’t explain you. I can’t explain you over the phone any of this.

R - You said that last time. And we didn’t talk for years. You can tell the world who this guy was. You were with him for a long time. You know what I mean?

B - [Silence.]

R - I totally understand that you think he could have had help committing suicide.

B - First of all, I have to go right now. I have another client.

R - Still training people?

B - Yes. But just be careful. I’m not kidding.

R - What’s your email so I can send you —

B - Don’t do any kind of that stuff. Just don’t play it. Seriously.

R - Can you tell me why?

B - I can’t. I can’t.

R - May I ask you one more question?

B - Go ahead.

R - Have you been talking to anyone in the government, the FBI? Have they come to you?

B - [Long pause] Um. Great talking to you. Seriously. We talk later.

R - Really?

B - Bye.

R - All right.

B - Bye.”

WaPo: Autopsy finds broken bones in Jeffrey Epstein’s neck, deepening questions around his death:

Among the bones broken in Epstein’s neck was the hyoid bone, which in men is near the Adam’s apple. Such breaks can occur in those who hang themselves, particularly if they are older, according to forensics experts and studies on the subject. But they are more common in victims of homicide by strangulation, the experts said.

The details are the first findings to emerge from the autopsy of Epstein, a convicted sex offender and multimillionaire in federal custody on charges of sex trafficking. He died early Saturday morning after guards found him hanging in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan and he could not be revived.

Just call me McNulty.

I thought a broken hyoid was a hallmark sign of hanging, it being called the “hangman’s fracture” and all.

You do bring up a good point in that I don't recall seeing anything about what Epstein allegedly hung himself with and from where. Still, I'm pretty sure though that the former wasn't a rope made out of hemp and the latter wasn't a gallows with a trap door.

My understand is it's a hallmark of violent vigorous drop-from-a-gallows hanging not jailhouse hangings which are more a slip knot tied to a bed rial you gently lean forward into until you pass out.

The examiner said that these injuries were atypical but not unheard of with this style of suicide.

Oh goodie! Fodder for both conspiracy theories from all sides!

#bothsides?

You think there are only 2 sides?

Some believe Epstein was a Russian or Mossad agent gathering blackmail material on celebrities and world leaders and one of them had him killed.

Some believe all these creeps just know each other and run in the same circles and Clinton and Trump both had him whacked.

I guarantee you those aren’t all the sides besides the ones you’re thinking of.

That is why I changed it to "all sides"

Conspiracy nuts are like Hydra - "cut off one head and two more take its place"

Oh, I thought it said both sides. Sorry.

NP. It did for awhile.

And speaking of conspiracy theories does anyone else trump talked about the Greenland stuff just to distract people? I mean it is one every news site, tons of discussion, opinions pieces etc. All for something that no on in their right mind thinks would happen.

But it is eating up air time and resources that could be looking into actual actions that are hurting people.

Maybe I am giving him to much credit for planning.

It's not easy being Green(land).

This exactly.

It’s his handlers doing all the planning, they just poke him to get him to blurt out some new (or old) absurdity.

Even a mediocre journalist...
