On this, the week of Thanksgiving (Defined as an American Holiday about celebrating the good things in your life by consuming as many of them as possible), my game of the week feels quite apropos. Battle Chef Brigade is a game I’ve had on my wishlist since I tried it at PAX East earlier this year and had a chance to sit down with the president of Trinket Studios to talk about it. It’s a game that combines Puzzle Fighters and Viewtiful Joe with an art style straight out of Filmation’s oeuvre.

For the rest of you, there’s Tiny Metal, which is Area35’s stab at bringing Advance Wars back from the grave and Achievement Lurker: Dad Jokes, which is an RPG Maker JRPG about two dads on a quest to collect all of the dad jokes in the world.

Two years ago developer Dontnod gave Telltale a bit of a run for their money with Life is Strange. They proved that you didn't need to be a scrappy little indie developer with a buggy engine to make a successful and engaging narrative-driven adventure. It was so successful that, despite the developer confirming a sequel with a brand new story and characters, Square-Enix was driven to release prequel Life is Strange: Before the Storm by a different developer this year in order to capitalize on the first's success in a timely fashion.

Well, Fox decided rather than licensing their own property out to Telltale, they'd instead use their newly formed FoxNext label to push Planet of the Apes: The Last Frontier. With their surprise release date announcement last week, my pick was all but confirmed. That Rise of the Planet of the Apes wasn't a complete disaster was surprise enough, but the ambition I saw in both Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes cemented this as perhaps my favorite cinematic trilogy of all time (yes, even surpassing Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I'm a contrarian to the bone). So while there's no promise that the same level of quality will translate to The Last Frontier, the trailers at least promise an excellent interpretation using a fitting genre in video games.

So it's pretty safe to assume I'll be grabbing Planet of the Apes: The Last Frontier.

Assassin Creed Origins gets its first DLC, Trials of the Gods, this week. It’s a timed event over 4 days, where you fight a different god each day. I do all my gaming behind the curve these days, so I’m hoping Ubi will do like Hitman did with Elusive Targets, and bundle it up in the Game of the Year edition. If you absolutely need to jump in within the allotted days, be warned: apparently it's quite Soulsy if you do it at level 30 or below. Of course, you can always buy a Time Saver kit to skip up to the required level. Le sigh.

Otherwise, I’ll throw my lot in with Tiny Metal – it looks like a nice way to get a turn-based strategy fix when it’s too early to replay XCOM 2: War of the Chosen.

I finally got my Switch and I’ve been breathing in all the wilds with great gusto, alternating with beating my head on the desk as I finally beat XCOM2: War of the Chosen. While prepping for Thanksgiving I’ve come up for a bit less wild air, and found an odd little middle ground.

Tiny Metal is strategy RPG for the Switch with a lot of parallels o the venerable but fallow Advance Wars series. You maneuver your gritty but cute little troops around a battlefield, working with the terrain and your various units' abilities to overcome the hated foe who has wronged your great country of Artemesia.

I saw this as PAX West, and had it in the back of my mind. The Area35 team has a rock-solid game development pedigree in strategy games. Add in music by Tomoki Miyoshi to set the mood, and I’m ready to lock and load.

Wow. I honestly had no idea anyone felt this way. I've been ignoring the series since 2011 and didn't even realize they had made three of em at this point.

Of course, I also completely wrote off the Apes series after the original film anyway. Does the lore run all the way through the films?

Solid writing on whoever's handling this plot thread for 2017. Classic setup and delivery here.

I don't feel as strongly about them as cess, but I completely agree that the new Planet of the Apes series is much better than it has any right to be. I was reluctantly dragged to the first and have been excited to see each new entry since. They're definitely worth a look.

Which original film? Original original with Charleton Heston? Or Rise of the Planet of the Apes? The very first one with Heston is fun for me to watch but it's also a product of its times. You gotta be ready for an old ass f*cking movie in order to enjoy it.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was intended to be a sort of soft-reboot, but will probably become a full-on reboot. Every trailer for Rise made it look horrible, but I saw it on a lark and was genuinely shocked by the film's quality. However, I'd say Dawn and War were both actually far superior and have far surprassed the pedigree of the original films. Granted, given that there's a lot of Genesis and Exodus allegory going on in Dawn and War, respectively, I'm bound to be a sucker. Even so, the only reason I'm in any way interested in DC's next Batman film is because the director of Dawn and War and his team is moving on to do that, and the guy has proven he can do some pretty impressive, heady stuff with a seemingly silly concept.

Now let's see if Warner Bros. grants him the same freedom Fox might have granted him (I doubt it).

Yeah, I meant the original original film. It and the Tim Burton one are the only ones I've seen.

Yes, the one week where half of us agree.

Bother. I really was looking forward to that. Oh well. I guess it will have to tide me over the holidays until Ni No Kuni II ships.

Of course Tiny Metal was looking awesome.
