I'm enjoying this so far. The controls are a little twitchy, and I'm very much on the fence as to whether the motion controls are really worthwhile. That said, it's beautifully realised thus far, and my wife has informed me in no uncertain terms that we will be doing a co-op playthrough, and that I will be "the hat". So I'll keep you guys informed how my hat skills work out.

Out for delivery. Tonight should be fun

yes! amazon says my copy has been delivered. *throws homework in bin on way out of door*

Spoiler:

*then sheepishly slinks back and retrieves homework from the bin again when no-one is looking 'cause I kinda need it, really *

You missed The Onion's take.

I'm not sure if that last line is a sign of them being clueless, or just another joke.

Got about 30 min in before I had to head out this morning. It's beautiful.

I'm not loving using the split Joycons since I've gotten so used to the comfort of the Pro controller, but there are a lot of motion controls that seem...important? It doesn't seem like they're going to be essential for the most part, but the extra precision seems like it will be worth it when I get used to them, so I'm going to stick to them for now. Excited to get back to it!

Got to play a little bit yesterday (unlocked at 21:00 for west coast).

I was apprehensive, but this plays surprisingly well with the the joycon in each hand setup they recommend. They also set the tone really early giving you some truly bonkers options to capture with the cap.

I stuck around on the first island to hunt for secrets after finding enough moons to power the ship and I was surprised at the amount of puzzling required for some of the hidden moons. I missed the Mario Galaxy series... has Mario had puzzles like this recently?

Yeah I'm effectively checked out of work today. It's a good thing it is slow at work today because I'm basically just killing time until Mario Odyssey. While I won't be able to play it immediately and have a bunch of Niece-Based activities beforehand, I'm looking forward to seeing how she likes it.

Largely because I'm figuratively chewing my nails after having put the Super Mario Odyssey Switch Bundle on my credit card for her Christmas present so she better damn well like it God dammit aaaargh.

Seriously though, work? What's work? What are you talking about Stranger Things 2? Is that the subtitle to the next Doctor Strange? Whatever, man! Just gimme Mario Odyssey!

Will try to squeeze in some time to play tonight.

Picked it up this morning, love what I’ve played so far.

Spoiler:

Made it up to getting the Odyssey and arriving at Sand Kingdom.

The game is excellent, unfortunately some of the actions like Spin Throw don't work without motion controls and I'm playing with a wired controller who doesn't support them.

After Zelda (which I played on WiiU) this is likely a system-seller for me and my wife. I may have to buy an early-early X-Mas present!

The map screen is GENIUS. What an excellent way of throwing in some flavour and background without direct exposition!

The Mario wedding amiibos are on lightning deal at Amazon. Only 1 penny off but I guess they're using the deal to track limited stock. 60% gone already, 15 min left

30 moons and counting on the first real world. This game has just started, and it's already insane.

Edit: I just killed a boss by possessing its fist and making it punch itself in the face. Look out Zelda, you might have some GOTY competition.

Wedding amiibos don't seem to be gone yet. Looks like the deal recycled. Maybe the lightning deals is to help fairly offer them throughout the day. Peach is at only 5% claimed. One less after I'm done.

Mario and Bowser were also under 10% claimed as of this posting. Though I only went for Peach.

The spin throw you can do by spinning Mario first, but yeah there’s a upward throw and a throw along the ground that there doesn’t seem to be a way to do. So far I have been playing in handheld mode and haven’t run into anything I felt like I needed motion controls for. I know there will be some things here and there but I’m glad I’m not finding them too necessary.

So good!

It seems to me that both breath of the wild and odyssey are expertly designed to play the game for the sake of playing the game.

Just spent a bunch of time getting a moon, but I think my pleasure was more in having a challenging task and beating it, than in getting one more check box.

Cap-Jumping is immensely satisfying.

Can you not run in this game?

You run by default. Roll/spin is the new run. Mario is the new Sonic.

I know, right?!

I thought it was just blurry text which you wouldn't be able to read. When I zoomed in, I was delighted about all the information they stuck in there.

This bugged me for a bit. I felt like I was moving slower than I should be, and kept wanting to sprint. When I started using momentum to roll down hills, and then jump -> lunge forwards, the movement started to feel quite nice. It still feels different than previous entries, enough so that I keep thinking something isn't quite right, but I can't fault it.

Like everyone else, the motion controls are a letdown. That's my biggest knock towards the game at the moment. I really, really dislike forced motion controls.

A momentous occasion

Has that been in there since launch?

Hey, I only took Zelda out when Mario Rabbids came out.

This was extremely satisfying.

I really wish there was an easy way to post to YouTube Twitter and Facebook are the only options.

Edit: Not shown in the video... in the time it took me to save the video, all of those coins disappeared

I wish there was a way to fight other human players as Mario-possessed tanks!

Alright, I just spent $360 to play this game. It better be good.
