RIP Gord Downie

Gord Downie, the lead singer of The Tragically Hip passed away last night after a two year battle with brain cancer. The Tragically Hip is probably the prototypical "Canadian" band, and Gord Downie was a big part of it.

He will be missed greatly.

Greatly missed. Their final concert was one for the record books. The Tragically Hip were such a constant presence in my life growing up, sad he had to go so young but that dude burned BRIGHT.

You knew this was coming, but it still sucks. Downie always had this unique voice and odd stage presence and I recall listening to the Live Between Us album the first time and thinking, "This is the best he can sound live with all the studio work?", but damn it if he didn't wrap it all together to be a really unique and great frontman. I'd never rate the Hip as one of my favorite bands ever, but I always wound up picking up everything they released and enjoying the hell out of it, and they were always one of those bands I was going to see at some point but never prioritized it enough to make it happen.

I do count the Hip was my favourite band ever. Knowing it was coming doesn't take the sting off. They've been playing Hip songs all day on the shop floor at work.

- knew it was coming soon, but still...
