As much as I loved Monolith’s 2014 Middle Earthling masterpiece, I can’t muster any enthusiasm for its sequel. It’s not that I have any particular antipathy for the game’s controversial business model, I simply don’t care about fighting more trash-talking orcs. Maybe this time around people will stop incorrectly pluralizing the title. It’s Shadow of Mordors, people, not Shadows of Mordor.

But if I’m not picking what is, arguably, the biggest game coming out this week, what could I possibly want to talk about? Well, there are a couple games worth noting. Deadbeat Heroes looks to be a technical action brawler with a twist of British humor. Anonymous ME follows the adventures of a Chinese assassin during the Qin Dynasty that has the potential to be the next contender for “hard-as-nails-game that gets compared to Dark Souls even though it’s 2D.” Finally, Raiden 5 gets the old director’s cut treatment. I’m not sure what that means in the context of an arcade shoot-em-up; perhaps there’s a gag reel at the end or some deleted bullets to dodge. Regardless, it scratches that nostalgia itch for me.

My game of the week, however, is the Switch release of Stardew Valley, which happened last week, much to my surprise and chagrin. I’ll get the hang of this list thingie one of these days.

All I can say about Shadow of War is that I never thought someone could top Peter Jackson's take on The Hobbit in regards to desecrating J.R.R. Tolkien's grave. I imagine putting Lord of the Rings on some pedestal has become hip to mock and roll your eyes at, but given that it is the foundation for my interest in fantasy ... yeah, screw Nemesis systems, and screw Warner Bros. Interactive. Should have been a unique IP.

I never got to complete the original Evil Within, but I always wanted to return and see what it was like. Word on the street is the story was actually pretty crazy, and while it didn't carry the same polish I found Resident Evil 4 to have, Shinji Mikami's tense design was certainly in full force. It is for this reason I choose Evil Within 2 as my game of the week.

I enjoyed Shadow of Mordor, but that doesn’t automatically make Middle-earth: Shadow of War a slam-dunk. For starters, Mordor is a dreary place and, just as in Batman games, nihilistic grunt barks take a toll after 40-plus hours. The design philosophy for Shadow of War seems to have been: Add another layer to all systems. That Nemesis system with Captains and Warchiefs? It has Overlords now. You like skill trees? BAM! Extra branches. How about loot, everyone loves loot, right?

Will it be More-dor or Bore-dor? Shadow of Mordor was that rare open-world game where, if I stopped thinking too hard and just wandered around, I would soon find myself having fun. I’m hoping Shadow of War will be the same. GOTW.

If I had VR, I’d be checking out The Invisible Hours, a murder mystery set in a mansion. You may remember its developer, Tequila Works from such games as The Sexy Brutale. This has a similar vibe, in that events play out in different areas simultaneously – it’s up to you to work out where to be to see what.

Holy Potatoes! What the Hell?!

Well, that's quite the title.

Field of Glory II is out this week? Yummm.

Yes, please, now, yes

Yes, please, now, yes

Looks like all three The Invisible Hourses (Rift, Vive, or PSVR) are launching simultaneously today.

Oh snap, missed Raiden V coming out. I can't remember if I want it or not, but it's Raiden so there.
