Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

So that Smash tease really did throw me for a loop. In case there were folks that didn't catch it, I was wondering if they were going to do something with the original Splatoon since they were directly calling back to the initial trailer.

I'm curious why folks insist it's Smash 5, though. I don't think adding the Inklings or having Breath of the Wild link is enough to jump to that conclusion. Not to say that it won't be, but I'd rather wait and see since assuming with Nintendo results in an awful lot of asses.

Also, evidently Japan had a different Direct, as one of the announcements was SaGa: Scarlet Grace.

As for what I'm looking forward to...

Luigi's Mansion remake (I guess that's what Next Level has been doing since/alongside Federation Force?), Okami HD, Detective Pikachu (it's no Danny Devito but I actually like the voice actor), Captain Toad, and Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion. And I guess Smash.

I'd like to be more excited for Undertale, but I should just play the version Shoptroll gifted me on Steam. Everything else I'm either neutral on (wouldn't mind playing but probably won't get to) or outright don't care (South Park).

I'm about to break down and cry that there's still no news on Hollow Knight, and wondering whether this Fire Emblem is gonna release in 2018 after all. I just cannot see it as a holiday release. The franchise isn't as small as it once was but it's still niche by Nintendo's standards.

That fake out was glorious.

"More Splatoon? Why are they porting Splatoon when there is Splatoon 2? Wait, what the f*ck? What the f*ck! OH SNAP!"

Also: Solaire amiibo for Dark Souls! Probably getting that, even though I won't be getting the game on Switch.

Praise the sun!

No Fire Emblem or Virtual Console.

Back to playing Zelda / Mario.

Splatoon2 DLC looks fun, and it'll pull me back in for a while.

But I am platinum stoked for Smash. I've had so much fun being a filthy-casual in the series.

Well, bummed about FE. Guess we'll hear about it at E3 if it is a late summer release.

Smash was unexpected even though I've beat the drum on that taking a while because balancing that game is tough. Splatoon is such an obvious and welcome addition.

Still no idea what Retro is up to! If it is DK we won't hear anything until after that launches.

But will it be a new Smash or Wii U Smash?

I'm going with Smash 4.5, but I'm honestly ok with that

I have a Switch issue where I always want the game I can't have... so excited about all these games but now I want Luigi's Mansion and Warioware too!

Virtual Console was never gonna happen.

Also over in Japan, Phantasy Star Online 2 Cloud (which ain't a thing in America) is getting Breath of the Wild Link gear.

Nothing exciting for me personally in the Direct, but that Smash reveal was well-played.

Tennis looks so good. The motion controls and simple mode will let anyone play but I also like all these zany mechanics they have on top if you wanna dig in deep. Tournaments and events could also be a lot of fun. I don't know who I want to main though...

Same with the Splatoon 2 expansion. 80 single player missions!

I wonder if Nintendo will treat Splatoon 2 as sort of a GaaS game now. Free updates throughout the year to keep players engaged and a large paid expansion every year that adds a heap of content without splitting the playerbase?

If so, I hope the Season 2 expansion is co-op focused.

I'm thinking it's a new Smash, and I'm holding to my prediction that is will launch alongside the paid online service.

They have a pretty slick webpage for the Splatoon 2 expansion on the Japanese site.

And Sakurai tweeted about the Smash announcement so he's definitely working on it.

Dang BNice, I posted the American stuff in the Splatoon thread but it looks barren compared to the Japanese page.

I was excited to see it confirmed that Okami HD was coming to Switch, otherwise, same.

I will probably end up buying that Solaire amiibo and Undertale for a 3rd time to have it on the go.

Edit: I am definitely excited for Smash if it is new. I'm just assuming it's a port of 4 until confirmed otherwise.

Pearl is rocking Biggie's crown. Definitely intentional.

I'm plenty hyped about Smash if it's only a port. 3DS version was good but I'm another person that didn't have a Wii U. If they do it Mario Kart 8 Deluxe style with all DLC included it is well worth it.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is coming to Switch. This is a no brainer purchase for anyone who didn't play it on WiiU! This game is the absolute bomb. Don't miss it!

I might bite on this when it drops. Just never got around to it on the last system. Thanks.

You ain't wrong, son

Good direct. Some nice surprises, and plenty of stuff I'm excited for. It also felt like they were clearing the decks for E3 since many of the announcements were for things releasing this summer and were smaller titles that could've easily gone into the E3 presentation to fill time.

Equally interesting is that they're making another push on ARMS despite announcing a while back they were done with content updates for it. Not sure how happy they are with that game's performance (seems like a minor hit in Japan but not much interest elsewhere?), but it almost feels like maybe they're working on a sequel or an upgraded version (Super ARMS Turbo Champion Edition DX). Something's weird here.

Also, Japan's getting Taiko Drum Master this Summer:

Wii U/3DS Deluxe version by the look of it. That video was a callback to the style of the "New Challenger appears" promotional videos they did during the Switch 4 hype cycle.

That would be the plan judging by statements made at the end of last year.

I don't think it's possible to add a "heap of content" to the existing game modes without splitting the playerbase. You add new maps (something Salmon Run is in dire need of) you're immediately dividing the community into "haves" vs. "have-nots". They might be able to get away with new weapons/outfits but they'll have to be very careful with weapon/gear balance to avoid accusations of "pay-to-win" (again, a haves vs. have-nots situation).

An entirely new co-op mode could work though. I noticed they were keen to say that the DLC was the "first" so that would suggest they might have another one in the planning stages.

Give me Gunpoint on Switch or give me death!

Switch WiiU port with a bonus single player mode and all the character DLC Wiuod be morrrrre than enough for me

I'm way more excited for Mario Tennis than I expected. They're teasing a surprisingly deep sounding system. There's so much potential there.

The lack of single player mode is probably the single biggest reason I never got into Wii-U Smash compared to literally every other Smash.

Honestly, it's the simplified system with motion controls that has me thinking back to early Wii Tennis. While it wasn't as much a go-to as Wii Bowling, it was certainly one of the more fun parts of the package.

I'm just not enough of a fan of Tennis to drop the $60 I know it'll cost, and who knows what the deepest price drop will be.

I'm excited about that too for the same reasons. I totally love the idea of playing the motion version with my kids and then playing the more complicated version solo. Plus I love tennis so this fits right in my wheelhouse.

I’m in for the Dark Souls Aimbo.

Crap.

After work I tried ordering it on Gamestop's website, but when I tried to check out,

I drove out to my friendly local Gamestop, where it turns out that you cannot pre-order this and have it arrive at the store. Instead you need to have it shipped to your house. I went with the express shipping for $5, as same day was double the price.

Praise the sun indeed.

I feel like there’s no way, even if it is Nintendo, that they would announce Smash like that if it was just a port or a slight upgrade with new characters. That would piss people off to no end. Every other remake has clearly stated it was so from the reveal.
